Eating Disorder Not Otherwise Specified (or ED-NOS) is not anymore or less severe than any other eating disorder. The diagnosis of ED-NOS is probably what most suffers have. It could mean several things, including the following:
- The sufferer could have anorexia, but still be at a healthy weight, therefor they are not diagnosed as anorexia. (Please note: I do NOT believe that weight should have ANYTHING to do with the diagnosis. Just my personal opinion.)
- The sufferer could meet all of the criteria for anorexia, yet they still have their period.
- The could act out in both bulimic and anorexic manners.
- A person binges and purges, but less than twice a week.
To keep things simple, it is basically the diagnosis of anorexia, bulimia, COE, or BED, with an exception to a few of the criteria.
As with any of the named disorders, ED-NOS is both dangerous and can easliy cause death. It should NOT be assumed that just because the person doesn't meet the full criteria, that they do not suffer as much. Anyone with any type of eating disorder, whether it be anorexia, ED-NOS, or COE, suffers from an extreme amount of emotional stress that NEEDS attention.
