Suffers of this disorder display symptoms similar to Compulsive Overeating and Bulimia. Like Bulimics, they binge on large quantities of food, but unlike bulimics, they do not purge. Usually, they are above average weight or overweight.
Binges can be used to block emotions, forget the past, and not to dwell on current life problems. Some bingers actually use their disorder to keep people away from them with the mentality that "if I am fat, people will stay away from me/leave me alone."
BED (binge-eating disorder) is often confused with obesity. Obesity is a condition where a person is 25% or more overweight. Their weight gain results from poor eating habits, no excersize, and genetic factors. This is much different from BED.
The eating may start out to be enjoyable, but the person soon feels out of control and disgusting. Unlike obesity, BED is a psycological problem, which requires treatment to resolve the issues that are under the bingeing.
Diagnosis Criteria
- Recurrent episodes of binge eating. An episode of binge eating is characterized by both of the following:
-Eating, in a discrete period of time an amount of food that is definitely larger than most people would eat in a similar period of time under similar circumstances;
-A sense of lack of control over eating during the episode
- The binge eating episodes are associated with at least three of the following:
-Eating much more rapidly than normal
-Eating until feeling uncomfortably full
-Eating large amounts of food when not feeling physically hungry
-Eating alone because of being embarrassed by how much one is eating
-Feeling disgusted with oneself, depressed, or feeling very guilty after overeating
- Marked distress regarding binge eating.
-The binge eating occurs, on average, at least 2 days a week for 6 months.
-The binge eating is not associated with the regular use of inappropriate compensatory behaviors (eg, purging, fasting, excessive exercise) and does not occur exclusively during the course of anorexia nervosa or bulimia nervosa.
BED is just as emotionally disturbing as anorexia or bulimia. However, it is vey rarely diagnosed, because doctors seem to think that victims just need to eat less, etc, when in reality, binging is a serious eating disorder that poses serious consequences just as anorexia and bulimia do.
