| Q. 1. Capt. John Wakeman, b. 1594 at England, d. 1661 at New Haven, CT * representative of the plantation in the Colonial Court, a deacon of the church, served as Treasurer to the Colony of New Haven, Captain of the Colonial Forces * resided in the vacated by the widow Baldwin * Joined with Mr. Crane, Mr. Atwater and Goodman Miles, who were fellow merchants to form "The Ship Fellowship" intent to sail directly to England with the purpose of trading goods (instead of dealing with MA as a go between.) These men did not sail with the ship called Lamberton's ship, estimated at L5000, and as it set sail in inclement weather, it sank 3 miles off the coast of New Haven. * He writes an interesting piece regarding the doctrine of Congregationalism "I, John Wakeman of New haven, being weak in body, but of sound understanding and memory, in expectation of my great change, do make this my last will and testament. First, I commend my soul into the hands of my Lord Jesus Christ, my Redeeemer, trusting to be saved by his merits and intercession, and my body to be buried at the discretion of my executors and friends in hope of a joyful ressurection; testifying my thankfulness to God for the free manisfestation of his grace to me in Christ, and for the liberty and fellowship "vouchsafed" me with his people in his ordinances in a Congregational wasy, which I take to be the was yo Christ, orderly walked in according to his rules; but I do testify against absolute independency of churches, and perfection of any in light or actings, and against compulsion of conscience to concur with the church without inward satisfaction to conscience, and persecuting such as dissent upon this ground, which I take to be and abuse of the power given for edification by Christ, who is the only lord of the conscience." p 230 * History of the Colony of New Haven, CT p 208-9, 229, 230 Children: 1 2. Both are listed as being influential figures of Branford who removed to Newark. * From: Some Early Families of Bloomfield, NJ "JOHN Ward, called the "dishturner" and more frequently "turner" was the founder ancestor of the Wards of Watesesson Plain. He came to Newark in 1666 with the Branford Group. His UNCLE LAWRENCE , the first of the settlers to be mentioned as a deacon, also came at that time, but died childless four years later. NATHANIEL, the son of John owned property here in 1697.
