* "Under his father's will of February 8, 1802, Lewis Woodruff received the paternal mansion at the northeast corner of E Jersey St and Madison Ave, but, he dying without issue, it passed to his brothers and sister and their heirs. ...The will of Lewis Woodruff of Elizabethtown, dated July 23, 1801, (note the date of the will, this must have enabled the children of Isaac Jr. to sell the house mentioned,) and proved March 9, 1816, devised all his estate to his wife Hannah Horton Woodruff and her heirs and appoint her and Aaron Lane, Esq. as executors. The witnessess were George C Barber, Jonathan Hampton, and Gabriel Woodruff (who is he?) A codicil to the will dated June 8, 1812, reciting, "Having made some alterations in my real estate as well as personal estate, especially by the addition of 2 more tracts purchased in the present year," devise all to his wife Hannah, and to John Cook, "the young man who lived with me about 6 years, "$100 reward for his services and care during my illness, and the interest of $40 for repairs to the vault "belonging to me" in the Presbyterian Churchyard. Witnesses to the codicil were Jonathan Dayton, Isaac Morse and John Chetwood. The inventory of Lewis Woodruff's personal estate mentions items "in the store" and two and a half pages of bonds due his estate.

Also, to Mary Chapin, wife of Dr. Marshall Chapin of Detroit MI, $1,000; to Jonathan E Horton of NY, $1,000, to neice Elizabeth Cooper of Newark, "who now lives with me," $2,000; to Archibald S Woodruff of Elizabethtown, the house adjoining and lot easo of "where I now reside, that I purchased at Sherriff's sale and my pew in the church, No., 59;" to Phebe, wife of Andrew Woodruff of NY City, $2,000; and to said Andrew Woodruff, "the portraits of his grandfather and grandmother which is now hanging in my parlor," to Lucy Roberts of Newark, widow of Jesse Roberts, $2,000; to Samuel Woodruff of Springfield, son of Nehemiah Woodruff, $400; to Elizabeth Colie, sister of the same Samuel Woodruff, $100; to the Reverend John McDowell, "our late beloved pastor, $100 and my large folio bible;" to Joanna Harriman of Elizabethtown, $100; to Gould Phinney, "the use of the left half of my vault in our churchyard, and my clock; to the wife of Smith Scudder Esq., Elizabethtown, $250; to the Reverend Nicholas Murray, "or to any other minister who may occupy our parsonage at my decease, my side board, the same to remain in the parsonage of the FPC here;" and to Archibald Woodruff of Cincinnati, OH, $200. The will also devised one half of the net estate to "the welfare and convenience of the Church to which I belong and to charitable purposes, to worthy indigent members of the same, and my executors may think proper," and the other half to the trustees of said church to "promote pious and evangelical ends in our beloved church, and to enclose in durable manner our Bottle Hill graves." Hannah Phinney's friends, Elias Winans, Esq., and James F Meeker, Esq., were appointed executors. (Abstracts of original will in the office of Secretary of State, Trenton, NJ)"
