* " The Woodruff -Boudinot Mansion: built by Hon. Samuel Woodruff about 1750. Now called "Boxwood Hall," an Historic House Museum, administered by the Bureau of Forestry, Parks and Historic Sites. This historic building at 1073 East Jersey St, Elizabeth, NJ, was acquired by Elias Boudinot, and later by Gen. Jonathan Dayton, and more recently by William C DeHart Jr. In the late 1930s, the Boxwood Hall Memorial Association was formed, then purchased and deeded the building to State of NJ. General George Washington, Alexander Hamilton, Major Gerenal the Marquis de Lafayette, and other notables have been guests at this historic Woodruff home."
* The obituary notice of the Honorable Samuel Woodruff reads, "Elizabeth-town, August 12. On Wednesday morning last, departed this life after a short illness, the Hon. Samuel Woodruff, Esq., one of his Majesty's Council for this Province, a Gentleman universally known for his undaunted Resolution, unshaken Fidelity, and just Decisions, in the character of a Magistrate. For his Benevolence, hospitality, public spirit and Liberality, few, if any, excelled him. In his private Life were most eminently joined the affectionate Husband, tender pared, Kind Master, faithful Friend, and to Crown all, the cheerful and devout Christial. By his sudden fall, several Public and important Places of Trust became vacant, all which he filled with distinguished Integrity. His remains were decently interred yesterday afternoon in the First Presbyterian Church, attended by a numerous Concourse of People from this and neighboring towns, when a very pertinent and Judiciously applied Sermon was preached by the Rev. James Caldwell from Isaiah lvii, 1, 2." (Extracts form the New York Gazette and Weekly advertiser, Monday, August 15, 1768, reprinted in ANJ, 1st Series, XXVI, p 244.)
* "Administration upon the estate of Samuel Woodruff Esq. late of the Borough of Elizabeth Town, deceased intestate, was granted 15 August, 1768, to Elizabeth Woodruff, widow of the same Samuel Woodruff, Benjamin Woodruff Esq., minister of the Gospel, Joseph Woodruff, Merchant, and Isaac Woodruff Esq., all of said place. (ANJ, XXXIII, p 487.)"
* " The inventory of the "Personal Estate of the Honorable Samuel Woodruff Esq. deceased, taken ye 18th day of August 1768" lists the furnishings in these and other implied rooms: Blue room, Crimson room, Oak room, also articles in the Milk House, kitchen, cellar, Chaise house, Barn & Rayrick at the farm, the new dock, a boat named Long Black, goods in the store, etc., at a total valuation of 1698 pounds, 2 shillings, 4 pence, with debts of 300 pounds and bonds of 3662 pounds, 8 shillings, 4 pence, due the estate, all of which indicates that the Honorable Samuel Woodruff was a man of conciderable wealth."
