Leif Ericson was born in 975 and died in 1020. He was the second son of Eric the Red. They called Him Leif Ericson because he was the son of Eric
Eric s son-Ericson. He voyaged from Greenland, like his father Eric the Red, to Norway.
While in Norway the King (Olaf the 1st) converted Leif to Christianity and later sent him back to Greenland to win the Greenland people over to Christian faith. While he was sailing back to Greenland to win the people to Christianity he got lost and landed upon the North American shore. Bjarni Herjólfsson was one of the people onboard the ship that Ericson had taken to go back to Greenland and was the first to see the land in North America. He decided retraced his voyage and he reached Helluland, Markland, and finally Vinland. When he was sailing back to Greenland he came upon a wrecked trading ship and rescued the crew. In reward for his good deed he was awarded an entire rich cargo and got the nickname Leif the Lucky.
When he reached Greenland he carried out the mission of converting the people of Greenland to Christianity. One of the first persons that he converted was his mother, Thjódhild, who is said to have built Greenlands first Christian church Brattahlid. Then Leif lent his ship to his brother Thorvald for further exploration of Vinland.
