First of all, you get two movies for the price of one. (How's that for a great deal?) Preceding the main feature, The Power of One, is an action-packed short, Pikachu's Rescue Adventure.
Pokémon in their natural environment take center stage in the short, in which Ash and friends have very minor parts. Pikachu's Rescue Adventure takes place in a magical underground forest where Bellossom swing and sway and a Gyarados ferociously guards an idyllic waterfall. An Exeggcute attempt's to adopt a lost Togepi as one of their own, Meowth's smarty-pants wisecracks and a tree-rattling thunderstorm all come into play - but hey, it wouldn't be sporting to give away all the exciting stuff that happens, would it?
The Power of One starts off with a huge bang, as extremely eccentric Pokémon collector Lawrence III swoops down on the Orange Islands in a beautifully computer-generated airship in search of Zapdos, Moltres and Articuno. Lawrence III has heard that capturing all three may help him find Lugia, an extremely rare bird that lives deep beneath the ocean. Lawrence III is so obsessed with capturing Lugia, he doesn't care if his actions may bring about the end of the world!
Fortunately for the world, Ash Ketchum and friends arrive at nearby Shamouti Island just as Lawrence III's launches his reckless plan. The islanders offer Ash the opportunity to play the part of the hero in their annual festival. But when a huge storm kicks up, Ash soon realizes that he's playing for keeps.
A story with more twists and turns than Diglett's Cave awaits our hero. He meets a brand-new Pokémon, Slowking, guarding an ancient tablet on a remote island - and just like Team Rocket's Meowth, Slowking can talk to both people and other Pokémon. Professor Oak and Ash's Mom bravely helicopter into the eye of this perfect storm. Thousands upon thousands of Pokémon gather nearby, hoping against hope to help in any way they can. And - gasp - Team Rocket seriously considers helping the side of good. Will wonders never cease?
In the end, Ash learns that the power of one can indeed save the world. You'll learn that, too, in this terrific entertainment that's heart-warming, exciting, hilarious and, ultimately, inspirational. Two thumbs up!
