Ash&co are resting in the woods while on their way to Kogane City when Ash's ol' back-pack gets stolen by someone, or by something. But they find out that the thief was "something" after all, after they spot some animal (pokemon) foot prints left on the ground. At the same time, Team Rocket goes the city, and clevery steals a ham out of Nurse Joy's shopping basket and scram. They were so hungry and did not have any money on them, they decided to steal something instead. However, their ham gets stolen aswell, while they are arguing about who gets to eat it. Needless to say, they are not too happy about that.
Meanwhile, Ash and co. come back to their camping site after unsuccessful tracking down of a mysterious thieves(the Pokemon), and an encounter with unhappy Nurse Joy who tells the kids someone has stolen a ham from her too. Brock says he has an idea, and cooks a sausage with a *fake* sausage (so that it'll have a real sausage smell too), and leaves the fake one out in the woods.
He says that the smell would lure the thieves out. Brock's plan works successfully as a pack of enraged Derubiru appear from the forest and circle the kids, growling furiously at them (since they were tricked). Just then, a leader tells its pack to stop growling at the kids, and then leads them out of site. Ash&co follow, and TR, who find out that the thieves are rare pokemon Derubiru, plan to capture them all.
Ash&co soon arrive to an open field where a pack of Derubiru live. They also discover a mountain of food(and Ash's back pack too) which theystole from unwary humans. There is a young wounded Derubiru among the pack, and for that particular one, they've been commitng a theft to feed it untilit gets better. Ash goes close to it, but backs away as other Derubiru growls at him. But a leader stares at Ash and then tells its pack that it's ok to let him come near. Ash goes near the sick Derubiru once more, and touches it, finding out that it has a high fever and has to go to the Pokemon center. Just then, TR intervene as usual, and trap few members of the pack with their new mecha. The leader Derubiru tells Ash, "Go to the pokemon center quickly;i'll take care of them"(warning:interpreted by Meowth). So he carries Derubiru on his back and takes off with pikachu. After a while, though, the leader catches up with him, warning him that TR are after him. When they come, Pikachu clmibs on the back of the leader, and lauches Thunderbolt at the same time as Derubiru's flamthrower attack. And so, our villains are blasted off again.
The leader asks(?) Ash to put the sick Derubiru on its back, and Ash does so, sensing the leader's strong love and affection toward its pack member. They get to the pokemon center safely, and soon derubiru is cured. After going back to the pack and re-uniting with his friends, bunch of Derubiru come over to him and lick his face as a sign of friendship.
