Community Group Presents:
Rowboats Past, Present & Future
On the East & Harlem Rivers
The importance of rowboats to New York City over the past 400 years will be exhibited via a tour of "Rowboats Past, Present & Future on the East & Harlem Rivers" to several city locations in the year 2000. This collection of old prints, text, new photos, and renderings of future possibilities will also bring history to life by showing the renewed building and rowing of these boats by young New Yorkers.

The exhibit is sponsored by East River Crew, Inc., a group seeking to impart a love for, and an understanding of, the waters of the East River Community of New York City, with the idea that learning about and using the river will promote future generations' protection of it. Public access to waterways has been lost as boathouses and piers have deteriorated over the years, and East River C.R.E.W. hopes that can change.
On October 16, 1999 East River C.R.E.W. sponsored a "Fun Rowing Regatta" from Red Hook Brooklyn to the East 90th Street Pier, Manhattan, in 25-foot Whitehall Gig rowboats. Each boat was built by youth rowing programs, under the auspices of Floating the Apple, Inc., Saint David's School, Navy Junior ROTC, and local volunteers.
Interest in rowboats has been further renewed by their mention in the recent PBS series, "New York: A Documentary Film." Verrazano sailed into New York Harbor in 1524 with rowboats on board his ship, and American Indians had long traveled these waters in hollowed-out boats large and small. The rest is history, from George Washington's troops' narrow escape from Brooklyn in a fleet of "Whitehall gigs" to the boats' recreational and educational possibilities today.
Some of the exhibition panels will also be displayed at an East River Crew, Inc. Benefit Preview on Thurs. Jan. 6th from 6:30 - 9 PM at David Copperfield's, 1394 York Ave. at 74th St.
