What a terrible tragedy to have lost the boathouse at East 90th Street! A fire that broke out early Friday morning, July 8th also forced the closing of local ferry service to Yankee and Shea stadiums, and will impact rowing races planned there for the fall.

Public access to the water has been lost as boathouses and piers have deteriorated over the years. On-going community activity at this pier could have helped to secure it from both gradual deterioration and from fire.

East River C.R.E.W. (Community Recreation and Education on the Water) hopes that the rebuilt pier could accommodate the size of a new community boathouse. Under the patronage of Dr. George Murphy, the Fireboat House represented a beacon for community health and learning. It would be tragic to now deem the site unusable. The Fireboat House pier could then return its historic gift to the neighborhood as a site for environmental education, small boats, and public recreation.

East River C.R.E.W. seeks to impart a love for, and an understanding of, the waters of the East River Community of NYC, with the idea that learning about and using the river will promote future generations' protection of it.

Despite the setback, the organization continues to work with the New York City Department of Parks & Recreation and Community Boards 8 and 11 to revitalize the waterfront for public access to the river from East 90th to 125th Streets. Look for an upcoming exhibit sponsored by East River C.R.E.W. on the history of the Harlem and East River boating.
