C.R.E.W. CAMP
was a program for Junior High School students meeting every Saturday from September 30th to December 16th, 2000. OUr main locations were Pier 40 on the lower West side and El Faro-Beacon Community Center at 120th between Second and First Avenues. This camp was run by East River CREW, Inc with a generous grant from the New York City Environmental Fund. The camp ran from 8:30 am to 5:30 pm each day. Lunch and daily refreshments were provided. All of the senior staff were experienced teachers.
This camp program will be based on the Boatworks curriculum developed through a 1997 Toyota Tapestry Award and will include swimming lessons. The Boatworks curriculum uses local New York harbor history, environmental education, communications projects, and small-scale boat building to develop literacy, science, mathematics and technical skills. This curriculum would fit in beautifully with any studies of NYC's history or science and technology projects. It is available free from http://cpmcnet.columbia.edu/dept/physio/schools/boatworks/ for middle-school students
Some student-constructed products will be small scale rowboats, a PSA concerning the hazards of storm sewer overflow, and a guide to the local flora and fauna. View these on other pages on our site in the spring of 2001.
The focus of our hands-on scientific inquiry is the Harlem and East Rivers. Specialists are available to mentor students in specific areas as they develop their projects. East River CREW 's mission is to impart a love for and an understanding of, the waters of our community. We hope these thirty students become our first class of graduating stewards of the river. To this end, various activities are planned. Some of the daily activities would include:
? Swimming and water safety instruction as it relates to riverfront activities.
? Documenting the effects of tides and currents.
? Research and artwork relating to East River Crew's ongoing exhibition project on Rowing: Past, Present and Future.
? Field trips to boat building site, to work on a "Whitehall Gig"- a 25 foot rowboat under construction with other youth and NYC community members.
? Knot-tying, an important but not widely-known skill.
? Creating a Public Service Announcement on an issue important to teenagers, but little understood. Swimming and fishing in local waters has always been tempting, especially since waters have become cleaner. Swimming or fishing right after a heavy rain is dangerous because of a NYC condition called storm sewer overflow. The idea is for the group to take ownership of this issue and invent new ways to get the word out to their peers and community.
? Rowing trips in 25' "Whitehall Gigs".
? Fishing through catch and release programs. |
