Muroran is a major commercial port in Hokkaido, northern Japan. The city has been famous for its iron and steel industry and its protected deep draft harbor. A new 2.5-mile long suspension (Hakucho) bridge has been built across the harbor entrance to facilitate urban access. The port city's proximity to the scenic peninsula immediately to the west and the hot springs of Noboribetsu, fifteen miles to the northeast, permits visitors to enjoy the natural resources of the area. Lake Toya (Toya-ko) tourist region to the northwest is also a visitor favorite.
