Vastu Shastra
-------------

Vastu Shastra is an ancient science energy flow throughout the house/office/factory that allows
inflow of fresh air and natural light that promotes health, wealth, peace and happiness.

The most ancient science of architecture that goes back to the Vedic ages, it is composed of
specific rules and regulations, set down by sages of those times, that an architect / builder /
owner was expected to religiously follow to avoid coming under negative or evil influences.
Today, it is looked upon as a highly evolved, comprehensive building philosophy in which
directions and shapes are the most vital aspects of designing.

Right from the selection of site to correct slope of land down to the shape of the building,
this oldest form of architecture covers nearly every aspect of construction. Not only for
houses but temples, palaces, forts, offices...just about every possible form of construction.
Often providing relief if not cures to physical or emotional problems simply by relocating an
entrance, window or room.
Some of the important points made therein are :

Directional Alignment
Shape Of The Site
Slope Of The Land Surface
Impact of Gates At Various Locations
Brahmasthan (Central Zone of the Building)
The Staircase
Inner Planning of a House
Inner Planning of an Office
Internal Planning of any Industrial Building

Directional Alignment
The directional axis of the plot should be properly aligned with the axis of the earth's magnetic field.
Boundaries AC & BD should be parallel to a north-south axis. While boundaries AB & CD should be in an
East-West alignment.
For otherwise, such land will remain averse to overall growth, peace & happiness of those that
shall inhabit it.

Figure (a) shows directional alignment Figure (b) shows a non directionally aligned plot.
The geometrical axis of the plot should be properly aligned with the axis of the earth's magnetic field. i.e.
one set of boundaries should be parallel to the north south axis and theother to the east -west axis as
shown in the figure (a) and (b).

Shape Of The Site
Symmetrical shapes like square or rectangular, circular & hexagonal promote overall growth,
increases mental capabilities and generates prosperity.
Asymmetrical shapes like oval, triangular, parallelogram, star & trident are deemed inauspicious.
SHAPE EFFECTS
Rectangular Overall Growth
Hexagonal Prosperity

Slope Of The Land Surface
The surface should be elevated towards the southern and western sides and should be lower in
northern and eastern sides for overall growth and prosperity.

The Land should be elevated towards south and west sides and it should be lower in NORTH
and EAST sides for over all growth and happiness. If the land is-- HIGH IN NORTH OR EAST LOW
IN SOUTH-EAST LOW IN SOUTH LOW IN SOUTH-WEST LOW IN WEST LOW IN NORTH-WEST
LOW IN CENTRE, It can have adverse effects.

Impact of Gates At Various Locations
Eastern Side : The third and fourth gate promote prosperity.
Southern Side : The twelfth gate enhances growth.
Western Side : The twentieth and twenty-first gates stimulate financial growth.
Northern Side : The twenty-seventh, twenty-eighth and twenty-ninth gates promote happiness,
financial growth and overall gain respectively.

Of all the positions of the gates depicted in the figure, the positions that are favourable are in the
EASTERN SIDE 3. Prosperity 4. Govt Favour
SOUTH SIDE 11. Meanness 12. Prosperity, Human Growth
WEST SIDE 20. Financial and Human Growth 21. Financial and Human Growth
NORTH SIDE 27. Happiness 28. Financial and human Growth 29. All types of Gains
All the other placements of the gates ( marked Cross ) prove to be unfavourable.

Brahmasthan (Central Zone of the Building)
Should be free from any obstruction in the form of a wall, pillar and beam.
There should not be any fixture, toilet, lift or staircase etc. in this area
as shown in the Figures (a) and (b)

For Figure (a) Jurisdiction of brahmsthan in a For Figure (b) Jurisdiction of square building as shown by
the central square brahmsthan in a rectangular building ABCD is shown by a central "STAR"

The Staircase
Should be in the western or northern side of the building.
Turnings should be in the clockwise direction.
On reaching the upper floor, the facing should be towards south or east.

Inner Planning of a House
The oven should ideally be in the south-east zone.
Toilets should not be in the north-eastern, central and south-western zones.
The most south-western location is the ideal position for your master bedroom.
Position the boy's room in the northern or eastern side while the girl's and guest room are to be in
the north-western parts.

Place the beds in southerly or easterly direction
The provisions shown in the side diagram are as per the living style in the ancient times. However
considering the requirements of the modern days it can be rearranged based on the following guide lines
1. Kitchen fire should be in the South -East and should never be at the North-East, Centre and the
south west zones.
2. Toilets should not be provided at the North-East, Center and the South-West zones
3. Master bedroom should be in or nearest to the South-west Zones
4. Boys' Rooms should be in the North and/or East Zones
5. Girls and Guest rooms should be in the North - West zones.
6. Head Seat of the Bed should be in the South or the East Direction
7. Facing of the W/C should be towards the north or West Direction

Inner Planning of an Office
The shape of the cabin should be a regular square or a perfect rectangle.
The opening for the door should be free from any obstacle.
Doors should open inwards while entering a cabin.
The master chamber should either be in the south-west or nearest to south- west direction.
Chambers of directors / managers / senior staff should be in the southern & western zones.
While that of the junior staff should be in the north-west, north, north-east, east and south-east.
Pantry and toilets must be in north-eastern, central & south-western sections.

While making the interior of an office the following guidelines have to kept in mind.
1. The shape of the cabin should be regular ie square, or Perfect rectangle etc.
2. There should not be any obstacle ( Dvar-Vedh) in front of the door opening
3. The door leaves should pushed inside while entering into the cabin.
4. The master chamber should be in the south west or nearest to the south west zone.
5. The directors/managers/senior staff should be in the south & west zones.
6. The junior staff and other activities should be in the North-West, North, North-East,
East and South East Zones.
7. The facing of the Directors/Managers/Officers should be towards East or North.
8. Pantry and Toilets should not be in North-East, Center & South-west Zones

Internal Planning of any Industrial Building
Heavy plant and machinery should be installed in the south-western, southern & western parts.
Light weight and auxillary machines should be in the northern & eastern zones. Install boiler,
AC panels, generator, heater, dryer, oven, furnace etc. in the north-west & east sections.
Toilets should be placed in the north-east, centre or south-west.

Alternate Systems Of Healing
Over the past ten years the attitudes of both doctors and common people in western
countries has undergone a remarkable change with respect to their outlook towards a
host of alternative therapies that have been practiced for ages, essentially in the east.
Some of which are being looked into here:
Acupressure
Acupuncture
Magnet Therapy
Ancient Medicine
Reiki
Aroma Therapy
Laughter Therapy
Aura Therapy
-------------
ACCUPRESSURE:
-------------

Based on the principle of manipulation of crucial pressure points in the body, accupressure
cures difficult and chronic aches and pains - backaches, spondylitis, abdominal cramps,
neurological disorders, arthritis etc. These pressure points, over a 1000 of them are actually
small nerves about a centimeter in diameter and varying in depth between a quarter of an
inch to several inches. - are often embedded in or near a muscle or tendon.
Adds life to those limbs that have been partially disabled.
Safe and effective, it involves no pin-pricks, no heat fomentations, nor any chemical or
electric stimulations. However, it is a very exact art and should be carried out by a trained
practitioner, absolutely sure about the pressure points to be tapped and the correct pressure
to be applied.
The fundamental difference between these two systems being :
ACUPRESSURE ACUPUNCTURE
A form of physiotherapy that indulges in massage and stimulation of precise points of the body.
To ease all kinds of aches and pains and provide relief from tension, exhaustion and disease.
A form of surgery where needles are penetrated into specific points of your body. To cure
chronic aches and pain.

-------------
ACCUPUNCTURE:
-------------

The modern name is derived from the Latin words Acus (needle) and Punctura (penetration).
It is, however, an ancient Chinese art of healing that sticks needles into a patient's skin or
even muscles to correct imbalances in the `yin' & `yang' of the body.
Yellow Emperor's Classic of Internal Medicine, one of the oldest medical texts in the world,
comprises a special section called `Magic Gate', which is devoted to this therapeutic style.
Although modern acupuncture charts more than 2000 points in the body - located along
invisible energy called `meridians', 12 channels in each half of the body and 2 major
channels (Ren & Du) along the middle line - traditionally there were only 365.
The western explanation for this is that a needle inserted at specific acupuncture points
of the body releases certain chemical substances, that activate neuro-transmitters, which
then pass on nerve impulses to the brain to obtain the desired effects. Must be performed
by trained practitioners only.

Magnet Therapy
--------------
A newly formed system of medicine that is gaining popularity and recognition all over, it is
based on the principle that the earth is one big magnet and that all our bodies are surrounded
by magnetic waves emanating from the earth and other spatial bodies including the sun and
moon. This natural magnetism influences and supports all forms of life.
Disease is therefore caused by the imbalance between the various electro-magnetic forces
present within our bodies.
Thus strategic placement of magnets on specific parts of the body can cure chronic ailments
that standard medicine might find difficult to control.
Legend has it that Cleopatra always wore a small magnet on her forehead to maintain her
youth and beauty. And that men in love kept magnets with them to keep their beloved attracted
Some of the basic principles of this therapy are:
Use of mutually opposite properties of the North and South Poles.
The use of two methods - Unipolar and Bipolar. The use of only one pole on a diseased organ
gives desired results but only if diagnosis and selection of pole is correctly made.
During the course of treatment the patient is made to sit or lie down on an insulating wooden
chair or bed for best results.
While shape or size of the magnet does not matter, for sensitive organs as eyes, brain and heart,
weak magnets are used for very short periods of time. For chronic ailments, strong magnets need
to be employed.
Never given on a full stomach, pregnant women should opt out of it and all metallic objects that
absorb magnetic waves should be taken off before.
In the treatment of skin diseases, a cloth should be used between the magnet and the skin.

ANCIENT MEDICINE : CHINESE AND GREEK
------------------------------------

CHINESE
-------

According to the ancient Chinese system of philosophy, the human body is governed by Chi, which can
loosely be translated as the 'Life Force'.
The Chi is made up of the Yin and the Yang - the feminine and masculine principles - that in
perfect balance ensure health, peace and well being.
Any imbalance between the two causes disease.
As early as 2700 BC, the complicated system of Acupuncture had identified pressure points in
the human body that were considered crucial for the healing process. By manipulating these
pressure points, ancient Chinese physicians could treat the most complicated of diseases.

GREEK
-----

Ancient Greek medicine (circa 450 BC) is synonymous with the name of Hippocrates, who is
deemed to be the father of modern medicine.
Hippocrates based his study and his practice of medicine on logic, reasoning and scientific
experimentation.
For the first time in the ancient world medicine was separated from religion, philosophy and
superstition. He recorded all his theories and observations in a series of books, which are now
held sacred by the practitioners of modern medicine all over the world.
From about 6th century BC, many important developments were made in the fields of surgery,
orthopaedics, opthalmology and obstetrics in Greece. Greek surgeons using various types of
knives, syringes and forceps as surgical tools. Although there is a school of thought that
believes that transfer of similar knowledge from India through the trade connections cannot
be ruled out entirely.

------
REIKI:
------

Discovered and propounded by Dr.Mikao Usui in 1800, it is the ancient Japanese art of healing
by the 'laying on of hands' - Reiki meaning universal energy in Japanese.
A powerful and spiritual experimental technique that opens up the vision, heart, palm chakras,
third eye and other psychic abilities.
Providing holistic, positive energy without any side effects, it can be undergone independently
or with other medical treatments.
Treating the root-cause of a disease, it enhances the body's natural ability to heal itself. And
maintains equilibrium of both body and mind to promote complete relaxation, thereby raising
the life-force energy.
The therapist first makes a body-scan of the seven chakras to determine individual needs.
Actual therapy follows when the universal energy flows through the therapist into the client.
The various stages in the entire process being :
THE FIRST DEGREE STAGE
This is the primary stage where you get attuned as the universal energy activates in you through
transmission for approximately four hours over some days. When the attunement is established,
information is given on four levels of energy - physical, mental, emotional and spiritual. At this
stage, you are opened up to a higher level of universal resonance that can be ventured up to
unlimited heights through suggested use and applications.
THE SECOND DEGREE STAGE
Slightly more advanced, great changes in the energy levels are achieved here and symbols are
introduced to unlock the chakras that will improve your health.
THE THIRD DEGREE STAGE
In this most advanced and powerful stage you are taught the intricate process of passing on
the reiki energy and ways of enhancing personal growth, transformation and increased enlightenment.

AROMA THERAPY
-------------

"If the day and night are such that you greet them with joy and life emits a fragrance like
flowers and sweet scented herbs - that is your success. All nature is your congratulations."
Henry David Thoreaux.

The use of pure essential oils from plants dates back many centuries, and history of aroma
therapy is in many ways part of the history of herbal medicine as a whole. The Arabic countries
are usually credited with first discovering the process of distillation of oils about a thousand
years back. It then spread to India and then the west. In modern times much research has
taken place on this - from perfumery applications to medicinal uses.
Highly concentrated extracts, essential oils thus need to be treated with respect and care.
Preferably used sparingly - large doses not only increase immunity and reduce effectiveness,
they can prove irritating and even toxic to the skin - a large part of their effect on our moods
and emotions occurs through our sense of smell.

When we breathe in air, the aroma molecules are translated into signals by the receptor cells
in the nose. This signal is sent to the olfactory bulb and then on to the limbic and hypothalamic
parts of the brain. Although not scientifically proven, it is believed that the essential oil aroma
activates the `pharmacy' within our brains - neurochemicals as seretonin, endorphins etc. Which
are `words' that our brain uses to communicate with our nervous and other body systems. Thus
the aroma of a calming oil would cause release of seretonin - a euphoric aroma.
Relief from pain and other physical effects are also experienced when these neurochemicals are
released. Studies done on effects of essential oils on brain waves have shown that a rhythm
exhibiting calmness was produced when a oil with sedative potential was inhaled and a stimulating
aroma caused an alert response. Our minds can thus play an important role in our well being.
Aroma therapy thus works through the brain, through the mind and through the emotions e.g the
tender yellow flower of the Ylang Ylang tree is considered so worthy of love that it is placed on
wedding beds in Indonesia. Just as to calm your mind you need to close your eyes and feel the
lush coolness of an immense forest filled with cedars, trees of frankincense and sandalwood
through deep breaths of the lovely, fresh scent of those trees.
