Remember that in all areas, the more you research, the harder it is to get that next percentage of benefit. Thus as the game progresses, you will need more labs to keep up your research levels as your nation expands. Alternatively, you will need many spys to ensure success when attempting to steal tech points.

You do not need to research weapons technology. Early in the game, put a few points into this area. Then if you are in a technology alliance you will gain some benefits from the work of others. (Remember, in a tech alliance, if you have zero research points in an area, the research benefits of your allies will not be passed on in that area.) However, even with a percentage of development of just over 1%, you will get plenty of special weapons over the course of the game.

The area every player needs to research though is SDI. Even though you may not have many special weapons yourself, an enemy with even one can hurt you badly. Keep building up your SDI rating throughout the game. At what percentage to level out the SDI percentage is a matter of how much you fight and how secure you want to feel. Certainly, I recommend you keep going until at least a 90% rating.



MILITARY
This type of research lets you buy military equipment at a discount. You start at 100% and the maximum possible discount is 67%.

This is something that the democracy, republic and monarchy needs to work on quickly. As a nation probably buying military equipment instead of producing it, keep thost costs as low as possible. Certainly try to get down to 70%. Past that point, there might be other areas to boost percentages in before coming back and trying to eek out that last 3%.

For the dictatorship and tyranny, this is an area that needs to be researched, but it is not a priority. As a government probably producing most of their military strength, they do not buy as much military. However, one must buy spys. Also there are times when different areas of the military need to be bolstered by a purchase. Thus, it is an area not to be forgotten entirely.



MEDICAL
Here, the amount you want to research is not so much tied to your government, but your strategy. Medical research cuts your losses in combat. Therefore, your need for points in this area is proportional to your desire to attack others.

Early in the game, it is often less costly to grow through exploration. Thus medical research can be delayed for a time if this is your strategy.

If you are a player that attacks from the start, then put some points into medical technology quickly. Early in the game every point has the biggest 'bang' it can. You need to keep those losses down when conquering the land of others so someone else doesn't do the same to you.

Regardless of your early stategy, at some point in the game, one must attack. Like with military technology, research in the medical area cuts your base percentage. The best one can do is decrease your combat losses to 67% of the base. Once you start to approach the point where attacking becomes necessary, be sure to start putting a good number of reaseach points in this area. A player certainly wants to get the percentage down to the low 70's.



BUSINESS AND RESIDENTIAL
Like with your construction of buildings, in reaseach these areas whould go hand in hand. The maximum allowable level by the game is 200%.

When playing as a democracy, republic or monarchy, your goal is to generate tax revenues. This one of the best ways to do it. With these research levels at 200%, your income will be 400% the base level. This is an area to concentrate on.

With the dictatorship and tryanny, these areas are not as important. However they should not be ignored. is



ARGICULTURAL
It appears to be very similar in many ways to business and residential research. Though it has not been confirmed, the maximum is probably 200%.

With higher food production per acre, fewer farms are needed to keep your population and military fat and happy. There is a balancing act here though. How many turns to spend for those extra percentage points? Certainly it would seem that 150% is a miminum. Perhaps 190% is reasonable as well. Time will tell here as there is more data to consider.



INDUSTRIAL
In early versions of the game industrial reasearch was a waste. That is not so true now.

It appears that the maximun level for this type of research is still 150% of base production. However, changes in the amount each industrial site produces have made industrial sites more worthwile and at the same time industrial research worth undertaking.

If you are a democracy, republic or monarchy this is still not an area worth concentrating on. Like with weapons, it is a good idea to put a few points in this area so any tech allies research will benefit you as well. However it is probably not worth while to get to the max.

For the dictatorship or tyranny who produce most of their military though, it is a good idea to get everything out of those industrial sites you can. While going to 150% max would be extreme unless you have nothing better to use your labs for, getting into the 140% range is reasonalbe and prudent.

SPY EFFECTIVENESS
Researching better intelligence strategies make it easier for your spies to spy on you enemy. The maximun for this area will be around the 200% area.

WARFARE
This is another of the new forms of research. In a way a combination of the military and medical research areas and may not have been necessary. Regardless of that though, it is now a factor in the game and as such worthy of discussion.

It is not really a question of whether or not you will need to research this area. The answer there is a resounding yes. All nations will have conflict in the game and this will help you defeat your enemies.

The question is when do put research points into this area? The answer here goes back to your overall stategy. If you are in constant warfare from the start of the game, put points in to warfare research quickly. If you avoid conflict until later in the game, build up your primary areas of need and return to this one later.

CONDITIONING
Not quite sure what the maximum is most likely going to be around the 200% mark. By improving the training and conditioning process for your military, you can reduce the amount of readiness lost in attacks. This allows your troops to remain healthier and attack more often.
