EAGLS WINS AT NLRB HEARING!!!!!

Brothers and Sisters, I'm so happy to let you all know that the NLRB (National Labor Relations Board) ruled in EAGLS' favor regarding the petition filed by GLSP in which GLSP wanted to remove the Ombudsmen Coordinators from the bargaining unit. This is a HUGE victory for EAGLS, because we felt this was an attempt to weaken the Union.

Tera Reese-Beisbier and Vicky Gribble did an outstanding job in representing EAGLS in front of the NLRB in August 2001. The basis of GLSP's petition goes back to earlier this year when we were involved in bargaining. The Ombudsmen and Ombudsmen Coordinators had approached us with some issues they wanted taken up at bargaining, and they were willing to go to the table in their endeavor. EAGLS worked very hard to have the Ombudsman/Ombudsmen Coordinators separated into a different pay scale from the Paralegals (because they're job requirements and educational/experience requirements are different - these jobs are not the same). Additionally, EAGLS fought to have the Ombudsmen Coordinators on a higher pay scale than the Ombudsmen, because these jobs also have different requirements. Of course, once it became a matter of money, management proposed to take the Coordinators out of the bargaining unit, their reason being they simply hadn't realized how much the position had evolved over the years. (Isn't that kind of their job - to know what's going on in the Program??) EAGLS declined to bargain the issue as it was not a mandatory issue for bargaining (i.e., we didn't have to, so we decided we wouldn't). Management said they'd file a petition with the NLRB attempting to remove them and, according to testimony, Tera told them, "Go ahead."

In a nutshell, folks - the Coordinator's job hasn't evolved over the years, the Coordinators have no supervisory duties and no power to hire/fire employees, they're not management. This came down to a matter of money: EAGLS wanted it for the Coordinators, because they deserved it. Management claimed they would pay the Coordinators more if they were management - but if these workers were worth more all along, why wasn't management paying them accordingly all these years?

Allowing management to have the Coordinators would have meant these four people no longer had any grievance rights or protection under the Union's contract; EAGLS was absolutely unwilling to allow that to happen to these people. This is what the Union's all about, Brothers and Sisters - this is why we're here. All for one and one for all - in this case, it was all for four, and we fought and won for these four workers and rest assured we will continue to fight for the rights of each and every bargaining unit employee. This is what your union does, Brothers and Sisters.
