JULY 31, 2008. The Eagles arrived in Cairns, Queensland safe & sound, on time, and were greeted by sunny skies and warm weather. A practice session was the first the Eagles conducted with the entire team together.

Coach Mike Oseguera and Coach Don Trujillo had their first look at several of the players.

After returning to the team hotel the team enjoyed some free time to have dinner and wander around downtown Cairns. Everyone is healthy and happy!

11:00pm lights out.

AUGUST 1, 2008. The Eagles enjoyed a free morning to catch up on some sleep and wander around the beautiful city of Cairns. In the opening game of 2008 Great Barrier Reef Tournament the Eagles started off in fine fashion en route to beating the Queensland Cobras 14-4. Branden Mudd started on the mound and was followed by a capable compliment of pitching that included Tyler Vander Boegh and Elias Tuma. The offensive assault was highlighted by D.J. Crumlich hitting a 3-run homer deep in the left-center alley. It appears that the 2008 Eagles are primed to defend the tournament crown won by the 2007 Eagles.

AUGUST 2, 2008. Tournament games today included a double-header against the Townsville Rebels and the Cairns Cyclones, who are the hometown favorites. The Eagles beat Townsville by a score of 6-2, which advanced the Eagles to the tournament championship game against Cairns. Brian Schultz pitched a complete game in the winning effort. In a preview to the championship finals the evening game saw the Eagles trounce the Cairns Cyclones 14-4 in round-robin play. Starting pitcher Justin Arceneaux turned in a fine performance on the mound. With the game in hand, position players Dylan Tortarolo and Kevin Newburg got the opportunity to pitch the last two innings and save some pitching for the finals. The same two teams will meet again tomorrow to vie for bragging rights. It has happened in the past that the Eagles have beaten the Cyclones handily in round-robin play only to lose in the Championship Game.

AUGUST 3, 2008. The short story, the Eagles beat the Cairns Cyclones 5-3 to win the Great Barrier Reef Tournament Championship for the second year in-a-row. The early going for the Eagles looked grim as they were not able to muster up their first hit until the 4th inning and trailed going into the 6th inning 3-0. With two runners on the in bottom of the 6th DJ Crumlich hit a 2-RBI double to the wall in right-center to even the score. Two more runs in the inning put the Eagles on top to stay. Tyler Vander Boegh started on the mound, but Branden Mudd ended up with the win in relief.

Elias Tuma finished the game on the mound and struck out the Alligators side in order in the 5th inning.

August 8, 2008. The Eagles checked out of the hotel and commenced their 4-day home-stay with the Robina High School Baseball Team. In the first game of a 4-game series the Eagles jumped on top with an 11-2 opening victory. Justin Arceneaux pitched a complete game allowing just 4 hits. Arceneaux also contributed a three-run homer to the cause. After the game at the Surfers Paradise Baseball Club the Eagles dispersed with their host families.

August 9, 2008. The Gold Coast side showed up ready to play at the Palm Meadows Baseball Complex (home of the Major League Baseball Academy), but the Eagles once again picked up their 7th consecutive win. In a closely contested match, pitcher Branden Mudd held the Aussies in check enroute to a 3-2. Brian Schultz hit a double off the wall to lead the Yanks.

August 10, 2008. Kamrom Fariba provided most of the American offense with a 3-run homer over the center field wall and just missed a second home run to center that ended up as a two-bagger. The Eagles didn't need much more from the batters to win 8-3 over the Gold Coast. Tyler Vander Boegh started on the mound going 3 1/3 innings before giving way to Elias Tuma who finished the final 3 2/3 innings in another impressive outing. After the game both teams spend the afternoon on the beach at a BBQ party.

August 11, 2008. The Eagles won their ninth game 8-7 in the best game of the tour. Down by a score of 6-4 in the eigth inning, the Eagles came back to finish undefeated. Brian Schultz, Daniel Van Stone, Eric Zaragoza, and Justin Arceneaux all pitched.
Most of the team attended an evening professional rugby match with the host families.

August 12, 2008. After final good-byes with our new Aussie friends, the Eagles bussed from the Gold Coast to the Brisbane Airport for the long flight home. The memories will last a lifetime.
