The American Eagles arrived safe and sound in Cairns, Queensland, AUSTRALIA on Thursday, July 31. Clear skies and warm weather greeted the team after a perfect flight from LA. After checking into the hotel and getting unpacked, the Eagles conducted a practice at the Trinity Beach Sports Complex, the site of the 2003 Great Barrier Reef Baseball Tournament. The Eagles enjoyed a free evening in downtown Cairns and dined on the Esplanade.
Game #1 Eagles vs. QLD Cobras
The American Eagles opened their 2003 tour with a 14-1 win over the QLD Cobras. Toby DUFEK (2), Devin POWERS DAVIS (2), James TRUITT (1), and Tyler MELLOS (1) combined to pitch a 4 hitter. 1B Winston JACO had 2 singles and a double for 4 RBIs, while Brian CAPON, POWERS DAVIS, and Mike REYES, MELLOS, and Justin LIN each had two RBIs. 3B David HANGER, CAPON, JACO, MELLOS, and REYES had extra base hits, REYES contributing a double and a triple in the effort. Dustin AIMES singled and scored a run in 2 ABs.
On Saturday, August 2 the Eagles play two tournament games:
Game #2 Eagles vs. Townsville Twins
Eric SHERIDAN blasted 2 HRs and ended up with 10 total bases with two other hits (4-4), scoring 4 runs leading the Eagles to a 10-0 shutout of the Twins avenging a similar loss in last year's tournament. Toby DUFEK also homered and collected 3 RBIs, Brian CAPON went 3-4 with a double and an RBI. SHERIDAN also pitched 5 strong innings, striking out 7 Townsville batters.
Game #3 Eagles vs. Cairns Cyclones
A Brian CAPON 2-run home run highlighted a 11-6 loss to the open-aged host team, the Cairns Cyclones. Eric SHERIDAN, Josh CHILTON, Winston JACO and James TRUITT also collected hits. 4 Eagles pitchers gave up 10 earned runs in the loss. Despite the loss, the Eagles advanced to the tournament finals for the 3rd straight year tomorrow.
Game #4 Eagles vs. Cairns Cyclones (Tournament Final)
Despite amassing 12 hits vs. Cairns submarine-style right handed ace, Masa ENDO, the Eagles came up short in a tournament finals loss to the Cyclones, 13-2. Eric SHERIDAN continued his hot hitting with 2 hits and an RBI. Josh CHILTON and James TRUITT also had two hits. Brian CAPON, Mike REYES, Toby DUFEK, David HANGER, Winston JACO, and Dustin AIMES each had a single.
In the Awards Ceremony, Eric SHERIDAN was selected Tournament MVP as well as Batting Champion amassing a .667 average.
August 4 - The Eagles enjoyed a well deserved day off with a relaxing boat trip to Fitzroy Is. on the Great Barrier Reef. Though the day was overcast with occasional showers, the team enjoyed the sites of the reef, the island's dense rainforest and coral strewn beaches. After returning to Cairns, the team had a free night to enjoy their last night there and prepare to travel the next day to Brisbane.
August 5 - The Eagles arrived in Brisbane with a day free to explore the capital of Queensland. A team dinner that has become somewhat of a tradition was held that evening.
August 6 - After a morning free for a leisurly breakfast and more exploring in Brisbane, the Eagles were treated to a tour of the Australian Woolshed for an entertaining sheep shearing exhibition and livestock show. The team saw a good example of expert Australian sheep dog work as well as upclose and personal encounters with kangaroos, koalas, crocodiles, and other indigenous Australian native animals.
That evening the Eagles dropped a close game, 6-5, against the Brisbane South regional team. Despite good pitching by Tyler MELLOS and James TRUITT, defensive mistakes could not be overcome.
August 7 the Eagles traveled to Surfers Paradise to participate in the Major Leage Baseball International Academy - Friendship Tournament. Tournament games will be held August 7,8,9, & 10. The Eagels will be playing one game each day. Tournament finals conclude on August 10
Game #1 - Eagles vs. Australia
The Eagles were paired up against the host Australian Junior National U19 team in the first game of the the MLBI Friendship Tournament. Again, early defensive woes plagued the Eagles as they spotted the Australian team an early 5 run lead and weren't able to recover to lose the opener, 12-2. David HANGER (triple, run), Toby DUFEK (double), Eric SHERIDAN (single, run) and Adam KUBO (single) led the Eagles offense.
Game #2 - Eagles vs. Gold Coast
Rebounding from the previous days loss, the Eagles edged the Gold Coast, 5-3. Eric SHERIDAN (2 runs, single, SB), Brian CAPON (double, run), Winston JACO (run, single, 2 SB), Toby DUFEK (single, 2 BBs), Devin POWERS DAVIS (single, run), and Mike REYES (single) led the attack as the Eagles scored 3 runs in late innings to pull out the win. After the game, the Eagles met and departed with their host families. The players will be staying with these families for the remainder of their stay in Australia.
Game #3 - Eagles vs. Queensland Academy of Sport
The winning continued the following day with a 3-1 victory over the QAS team. David HANGER allowed no runs and only 2 hits in 5 innings of work while striking out 5 batters. He also tripled, driving in Winston JACO for the first run of the game and then scored on a Toby DUFEK single. DUFEK then scored after being sacrificed to second by Daniel MONTENEGRO on a single by Tyler MELLOS. Justin LIN and Dustin AIMES also contributed singles to the Eagles offense. The win moved the Eagles into the championship game against the host Australian Junior National team tomorrow.
Game #4 - Eagles vs Australia
In a game reminiscent of the 1st game of the tournament, the Eagles again spotted the Australian team 5 runs in the first inning and were defeated in the finals, 8-0. The Eagles offense was completely shut down by Australian pitching and defense. Toby DUFEK and Brian CAPON each had doubles and Eric SHERIDAN singled as the Eagles gained another second place finish.
In the awards ceremony that followed, Eagles pitcher David HANGER was awarded the Tournament BEST PITCHER Award.
August 11 - The Eagles had a free day to spend with their host families and enjoy the beauty of the Gold Coast and Surfer's Paradise.
August 12 - The American Eagles travelled home today, completing the 20th annual overseas trip for the club. The team took off from Brisbane International Airport after a bus trip up from the Gold Coast, stopping in Auckland, New Zealand, before arriving at LAX later the same day. |
