The Eagles arrived in Cairns, Queensland safe and sound on Thursday, August 2. Clear skies and warm weather greeted the team and they conducted a 2-hour practice in the afternoon. Practice was held at the site of annual Barrier Reef Tournament in Trinity Beach.
On Friday, August 3 the Eagles began tournament play against the Queensland Cobras in a night game played at the Trinity Beach Sports Complex. The game was close most of the way, but the Eagles prevailed in the end by a score of 10-5.
Tyler LORD started on the mound and pitched three innings, allowing one earned run while striking out 4 batters. LORD also had two hits and an RBI. Eddie BROWNE pitched the final four innings in relief, struck out 5 batters, and was credited with the win.
The offensive leader was Dan BURKHART as he provided 2 hits and 3 RBI's. Clint KOLSCHEFSKY also had two hits, including a double and 2 RBI's.

The Eagles played a doubleheader on Saturday, August 4.
In the morning game the Eagles met their perennial nemesis, the Cairns Cyclones, who are the defending Barrier Reef Champions. The Eagles jumped on top early and led the entire game, winning 12-3. Dan BURKHART pitched a complete game. He struck out 10 Cyclones and allowed just 5 hits. Chris SANTAMARINA lead the way offensively with 4 hits from 5 at bats and drove in 3 runs. Other Eagles with a two-hit performance include Tyler LORD, Andrew PETIX, Justin SCHOELLER, and Dan BURKHART. Justin SCHOELLER not only doubled and scored 4 runs, but provided the defensive play of the day in left field with a back-hand over-the-shoulder catch on the left field line to save two runs from scoring.

In the second game the Eagles assured themselves a spot in the Chamionship Game by beating the Townsville Steelers in a see-saw, nail-biter 15-14. After jumping to an 8 - 3 lead after 5 innings, some timely hitting and several walks gave the Steelers 10 runs in the top of the 6th. The Eagles came roaring back with 5 runs of their own after 2 outs in the bottom of the 6th, with Tyler LORD and Drew DETWILER leading the attack with a double and a single accounting for 3 RBI'S. But the Steelers weren't finished as they rang up another run in the top of the 7th. The Eagles were now down a run, again with 2 outs when Dan BURKHART blasted a long fly ball to center that eluded the center fielder allowing Eddie BROWNE, who had walked, to score the tying run. Kevin KOPPLE then came up and drove the first pitch to center field for the game winning RBI. The Eagles finished round-robin play undefeated with a 3-0 record.

On Sunday, August 5 the Eagles beat the Cairns Cyclones by a score of 12 to 3 to become the 2001 Barrier Reef Champions.
Brett SEAWELL started on the mound for the Eagles and gave up 3 runs in 3 innings. Dan BURKHART pitched 4 innings of shutout relief and picked up the win.
Chris SANTAMARINA had two hits, including a triple and 3 RBI's. Justin SCHOELLER went 3 for 5 with an RBI, and scored 3 runs. Andrew PETIX contributed 2 RBI's on one hit, and scored a run. Other players that got hits include Tyler BURR, Dan BURKHART, Sean KOLINS, and Kevin KOPPLE.

On Monday, August 6 the team took a boat to Fitzroy Island and spent the day snorkeling on the Great Barrier Reef and relaxing in the perfect weather.
On Tuesday, August 7 the Eagles bid farewell to their new friends in the great city of Cairns. Many fond memories on and off the field in Carins will reamin for a lifetime.
The Eagles flew to Brisbane, checked into the hotel, and enjoyed a team dinner at one of our favorite restaurants on the Queen Street Mall.
On Wednesday, August 8 MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL International and the Australian Baseball Federation treated the Eagles to a very special day at the Australian Baseball Academy located at the Palm Meadows Baseball Complex on the Gold Coast. The Eagles played an exhibition game against the Australian Academy Team, which includes the very best players under 19 years-old in the country. The Australians won by a score of 9-4. Chris SANTAMARINA led the Eagles' offensive effort with a couple of hits and Andrew PETIX added a couple of RBI's.
Many thanks to MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL International, and the Australian Director - Tom NICHOLSON, for taking the entire Eagles team out to dinner at Sizzler's Restaurant in Brisbane.
On Thursday, August 9 the Annual Brisbane Invitational Tournament commenced. The Eagles opened up with a victory over Brisbane South by a score of 7-4. Dan BURKHART started on the mound and picked up the win recording 12 strikeouts along the way. Justin SCHOELLER and Tyler BURR each had two hits to lead the attack.
On Friday, August 10 the Eagles visited the Australian Woolshed to interact with kangaroos, koalas, as well as see a sheep shearing and a sheep dog demonstration.
In the evening, the team continued their winning ways with a 18-0 win over the Brisbane Metros by registering a 16 run outburst in the 4th inning. Brett SEAWELL was brilliant on the mound struck out 10 batters with a devastating breaking ball. Clint KOLSCHEFSKY played the entire game behind the plate and did a great defensive job as well as call a great game. He also contributed with two run producing singles in the wild 4th inning. Chris SANTAMARINA shocked everyone on the field and in the stands by hitting a 2-run triple down the 1st base line on an intentional walk pitch on a 3-0 count. Ryan SEAWELL contributions included being hit twice in the game, and scoring both times. Way to take it for the team, Ryan! After the game the Eagles met their host families and departed for their new home.
On Saturday, the Eagles clinched the top spot in round-robin play by beating the Brisbane Expos 14-11 in a slugfest. Dan BURKART hit the Eagles first homerun on tour, and relieved Justin POLLARD to get the save. Justin SCHOELLER laid down a perfect squeeze bunt, scoring Sean KOLINS in the bottom of the 4th for the game's deciding run. The Eagles will seek to avenge a loss in last year's deciding game as they play the defending tournament champions, the Expos, again on Sunday.
THE EAGLES WIN!!! On Sunday, the Eagles were crowned the 2001 Brisbane Invitational Tournament champions by defeating the Expos, 11 - 2. Dan BURKHART went the distance, striking out 8 Expo batters and scattering 7 hits. A lead off 3rd inning home run by Ryan SEAWELL high lighted the offense. Though not recording a hit, Justin SCHOELLER scored 3 runs by getting hit twice, and drawing a walk. Dan BURKHART lashed out 2 doubles and scored a run. Chris SANTAMARINA turned 2 walks and a hit into 3 runs. The Eagles were awarded medals for their championship victory and received a long ovation from the crowd in the stands.

After the post game ceremony, the Eagles left Holloway Field for the last time to rejoin their host familes for their final night in Brisbane. The following morning, the team met at the Holiday Inn downtown for a bus ride through the Hinterland, a trek through the rainforest to beautiful Curtis Falls, then on for a well deserved day of rest and relaxation at Surfer's Paradise on the Gold Coast. On Tuesday, the team will again board a bus for the trip back to Brisbane Airport where they will board a plane to return home with all their great stories of a wonderful time in Australia, not to mention two championship medals.
The management and staff of the AMERICAN EAGLES wish to congratulate the team on a great tour and two well earned championships.
