The American Eagles Baseball Club arrived in Cairns, Queensland, Australia on Thursday, August 5, 1999 under cloudy skies and intermittent showers.
Practice sessions scheduled for August 5 were rained out.
Games played in the Great Barrier Reef Tournament commenced on Friday, August 6.
The Eagles Red Team had their first game rained out on August 6, but rescheduled for August 7. The weather cleared in the afternoon and the remaining two games of the day were played.
In the first game the Eagles Blue Squad defeated the Queensland Cobras by a score of 9-6. Down 6-0 in the fourth inning, the Eagles Blue scored seven times in the fourth inning and never lost the lead. Sean Boatright was the winning pitcher and Tyler Powell got the save. Riley Wilhite and Jason Admas each had two hits for the Eagles Blue Team.
In the evening game, the Boston Red Sox Scout team ended up in a 10-10 tie with the Cairns Cyclones after the two-hour time limit. Nolan Moser started on the mound for the Sox and was relieved in the last inning by Dustin Crites.
On Saturday, August 7:
The Eagles Red Team defeated the Queensland Cobras 9-2 behind strong pitching from Greg Walt who was relieved by Jeff Cunningham and Jason Armstrong. Greg Walt, Ben Greenberg, and Ryan Fillingim all homered for the Eagles Red.
The Eagles Blue Squad lost to the Townsville Steelers 5-4 in the last inning. Dave Isaacson pitched a complete game for the Eagles on his 18th birthday. Riley Wilhite led the game off with a homerun.
The Boston Red Sox Scout Team beat the Townsville Steelers 11-2. Corey Ohalek pitched a complete game victory for the Sox.
The Eagles Red Team beat the Cairns Cyclones 6-3. Richie Burgess pitched a complete game victory and Zach Mullinax homered to lead the Eagles Red.
The Blue Team lost to the Cairns Cyclones 10-1. Matt Woychak picked up the loss and Sean Boatright hit a homerun for the Eagles Blue.
In the late Saturday game, the Eagles Red played their third game of the day and came away with their third victory, 11-3, over the Townsville Steelers. This time the win came from the strong pitching of Anthony Albanese. This victory put the Eagles Red team in the Championship final game tomorrow.
On Sunday, August 8, 1999:
The American Eagles Red Teamcaptured the Great Barrier Reef Tournament Championship with an 11-7 victory over the Cairns Cyclones, avenging a defeat in the finals last year by the same team. Strong pitching from Greg Walt, Richie Burgess and Anthony Albanese kept the Cyclones from coming back after an early 10-0 Eagles lead. Jason Armstron shut the door in the final 1 1/3 innings for the save. The Eagles were aided by early defensive problems by the Cyclones and crafty baserunning by the Eagles' Jason Armstrong, Isamu "Ice" Nigro, and Jeff Cunningham.
The Boston Red Sox scout team captured 3rd place, beating the Townsville Steelers. Marc Hordon of the Sox pitched a one-hitter and hit two towering homeruns.
The American Eagles "Blue" lost a heartbreaking 2-1 decision to the Queensland Cobras in the 5th place game.
Eagle Tyler Powell shut the Cobras out for the first six innings before giving up the deciding run in the last inning.
Tournament MVP honors went to Greg Walt of the Eagles Red.
Marc Hordon of the BoSox scout team captured the home run hitting contest title with 2 home runs in windy conditions, and also was awarded the Best Pitcher of the Tournament title.
Alfredo Sainz, also of the Red Sox, took the tournament batting title with a .538 batting average.
Chris Morton of the Cairns Cyclones won the Golden Glove Award for fielding.
Monday, August 9, 1999:
The three American teams spent the day snorkeling on the Great Barrier Reef at Green Island. The weather was perfect and the day a relaxing break after the Barrier Reef Tournament.
Tuesday, August 10, 1999:
The three USA teams (Eagles Blue, Eagles Red & Boston Red Sox) flew from Cairns to Brisbane. After checking into the hotel the evening was free to prepare for the Brisbane International Tournament.
Wednesday, August 11, 1999:
The Brisbane SPI Invitational Tournament began this morning with the American Eagles Red coming from behind to take the first game with a close 8-7 victory over the Brisbane Expos Red. Richie Burgess' 2 run single in the top of the 5th sealed the win. Starting pitcher Greg Walt hit his second home run of the tour.
The American Eagles Blue kept the wins coming with another come-from-behind win over the Expos Blue, 4-2.
The Red Sox Scout Team beat the Brisbane Expos White squad by a score of 10-0. The game ended on the 10-run mercy rule after 5 innings. Nolan Moser pitched the complete game shutout for the Sox.
Thursday, August 12, 1999:
The group spent the morning visiting the local sights, including a visit the a Koala-Kangaroo sanctuary.
In the evening the Eagles Red squad defeated the Brisbane Expos White Team by a score of 11-1. Richie Burgess pitched the win.
In the late game the Eagles Blue Team lost to the Expos Red Team 4-2. The game was called in the fifth inning due to a light failure that left the field too dark to continue play.
Friday, August 13, 1999:
A morning bus ride up to the Sunshine Coast took about two hours. The Boston Red Sox scouting staff, and the Eagles Red Team Coach Don Trujillo, conducted a tryout camp and clinic at the Sunshine Cutters Baseball Club, where the Australian Olympic Team will train for the 2000 Sydney Olympics.
The Eagles Blue Team dropped the first game in the evening to the Expos White Team, 7-3. Rain showers delayed play and the game was called after the two-hour time limit.
In the late game the Red Sox Scout Team enjoyed better weather, but ended up with their second tie on the tour. Their game with the Expos Blue Team ended after two-hours with the score locked at 2 runs apiece. Corey Ohalek pitched well for the Sox, but a late unearned run cost him the win.
On Saturday, August 14, 1999
The Eagles Red team escaped disaster by overcoming a 9-run deficit and ended up with a tie, 10 all. A late homerun by Jeff Cunningham kept the Red team in the game. A great defensive play by first baseman Ryan Fillingim throwing out a runner at home with an equally impressive effort from catcher Ben Greenberg to block the plate saved the draw for the Red squad and kept team's hopes alive to vie for another championship.
The Red Sox scout team lost by a score of 7-3, setting up the Eagles Red Team to play in the championship game.
On Sunday, August 15, 1999
The Eagles Blue team won their consolation game behind strong pitching from Dave Isaacson.
The Red Sox Scout team won the third place game with Nolan Moser pitching his second shutout for the Sox.
The Eagles Red Team won the Brisbane International Tournament winning the Championship Game. Coach Don Trujillo's club went undefeated on the tour with a record of 7-0-1 and captured both tournament titles.

On Monday, August 16, 1999:
The Eagles & Red Sox departed Brisbane by motorcoach and visited the tropical rain forest in the Hinterland. Continuing on to Surfer's Paradise on the famous Gold Coast, all players, coaches, and supporters enjoyed an entire day of fun and sun at the beach.
On Tuesday, August 17, 1999:
The thre USA teams returned to Brisbane by motor coach and flew home to final destiniations via Los Angeles.
Recruiting for the 2000 Eagles is now under way and applications are being accepted by all qualified baseball players.
