| The Rock Vs Mankind |
 |
Over the next five months, The Rock was locked into a seesaw struggle with Mankind. The two engaged in many memorable battles for the World Wrestling Federation Championship.
Approximately one month into his first-ever Federation title reign, The Rock was upended by Mankind in Worcester, Mass. The loss not only came as a surprise to The Rock, but to his corporate associates, Shane and Mr. McMahon as well. With revenge on their mind, the McMahons and The Rock used their clout and intellect to lure the new champion into an "I Quit" match scheduled for the Royal Rumble.
Never one to turn down a challenge, a confident Mankind accepted The Rock's proposal. However, The Corporation had plans for this contest even Mankind could not have expected. The match turned into one the most violent affairs in Federation history. Mid-way into the bout, The Rock took advantage of a weary Mankind by handcuffing "the deranged one's" hands behind his back. The unfair handcuffing was followed by ten-plus chair shots by The Rock to Mankind's skull. The Rock's punishment rendered the champ unconscious. It was then that fans in attendance heard the voice of Mankind scream "I quit." However, what nobody knew was that Mankind's voice was actually piped into the arena from a previous recording... The Rock was the champion nonetheless. However, his second reign didn't last long. Two days after re-gaining the Federation Championship, The Rock once again fell to Mankind in a special edition of Heat which took place during halftime of the Super Bowl.
Once again, The Rock's corporate connections wouldn't stand for Mankind representing the Federation as its champion. So, in yet another corporate plan, The Rock became a three-time Federation Champion by defeating Mankind in a ladder match. The victory was marred by controversy, thanks to the interference of The Corporation's newest member, The Big Show.
At the young age of 27, The Rock had become a three-time champion - a feat no other superstar has ever accomplished. However, just as quickly as he became three-time champion, he would become a former champion. The Rock unsuccessfully defended the championship against Stone Cold Steve Austin at WrestleMania XV. The "Great One" gained some measure of revenge by tossing Stone Cold and his custom title belt into a river a few weeks later, only to reveal that he had Austin's prize the whole time. The two fought at Backlash with Stone Cold again emerging victorious. The Rock, however, was even more enraged after his defeat. |
