| I am an Honor Graduate of Veterinary Medicine with a grade average of 95% and I started working with The German Shepherd Dog at the age of twelve years old. How it all began with dogs: Many years ago, I had a Black and Rust Doberman that was for sale and a lady that was interested in my "Vince" brought with her a beautiful Black and Tan German Shepherd puppy. As she drove away with my Vince, her Shepherd puppy nuzzled it's way right into my heart! I didn't know it at the time but this little bitch puppy was the Granddaughter of V Chicko vom Status Quo 15 times SchH3 who was owned by The President of The International Schutzhund Club DVG George Ardner, of Tampa Florida, and she was one of the finest breeding bitches that I have ever owned. Chicko was a grandson of VA Quanto von der Wienerau SchH3. Some years later: while I was attending training classes, a friend of mine asked me to try on a bite suit. I thought to myself "How hard can this really be????" so I donned the suit and took my first bite on my arm. I was painfully sore the whole next day but when that dog looked me in the eye as I leaned down and cracked my whip, I knew I had found my zest for life! It was like winning a NASCAR race! All of the energy filled both the dog and myself. It wasn't long until I saved up enough to buy my own training equipment. Many men, averaging around 250 plus pounds sometimes giggle and smurk when they see me because of my size, I am 5'4 and only weigh 135 pounds wet. I hear comments like "My dog weighs as much as you do little lady" on a daily basis but when they see me in action it is a whole other story! Schutzhund is very rewarding for both the owner and the dog. It provids obedience training, which every dog needs! And exercise, which few dogs can ever get enough of! I knew that I was doing something right when our newest next door neighbors, a Daycare Center, commented on how much better our pets were behaved than her children were! What is really important: I feel that temperament is very important in the German Shepherd Dog if not the number one requirement before breeding a dog. In the 1980's, the largest Majority of our pups went to Law Enforcement Employees. Whereas now, most of our puppies go to Family homes and homes that have Handicapped individuals instead of Law Enforcement People because these people need a calmer layed back German Shepherd Dog. Competition or Clueless? I have been to visit some of the top Schutzhund Kennels in Florida, where I have lived for most of my life before finally moving back to my home State of Tennessee to Get married and start a family of my own, I must have went to a thousand Kennels everywhere from Lakeland, Brooksville (Where I would have expected better of the KNPV President) to Fort Myers that housed scitzophrenic lunatics that had to be hopped up on hormones just to be able to breed or trained into aggression, then trying to pass them off as Well Bred German Shepherds that were worthy of being bred. Bad Breeding: These Breeders are clever cookies selling mange infested, worm riddled mutants that carry various other faux pas that one should stay far away from if interested in Canine Reproduction and they are all too quick to give give a thousand and one reasons of why their dog's condition is only "temporary." Or it will grow out of it after spending thousands of dollars on their puppy, they find some reason that the puppy "Isn't Guaranteed." Ever heard that one before? We have too! And this only makes the breeding laws become more and more strict depending on the number of such sales complaints from State to State. To protect the public from these people. Majority of breeders today are not looking out for the best interest of their puppy and will settle on any buyer that comes along. It must not be this way. If an owner isn't happy with their new puppy, chances are that it will very shortly find itself in a shelter or local pound. A Breeder's responsibility if they are breeding German Shepherds is to devote time to the breed and not just to their individual dogs. One must rescue our beloved breed as well as trying to make their puppies the best outstanding members of their comunity that they can be. We urge our owners to take their puppy out in public, get it used to a wide variety of noises and situations so when it becomes an adult, it isn't a neurotic specticle of what the German Shepherd should NOT be! About Our Pups: Our German Shepherd puppies learn the basics at a young and tender age. They learn their name, which is very important. They are socialized with our family and friends, they are kept inside our home with our family and never left outside in a kennel by themselves to get restless and bored. By the age of 8 weeks, I like to have them heeling with hot dog pieces of bait at our side and to learn the words "go potty" when outside. It is also very important to have the puppy meet and greet all new guests that come into our homes. Never lock your puppy away in a bathroom when guests arrive!
