Who are the Dueling Poets? How did it start?
Dueling Poets is a unique concept, for it is in some ways a debate between a poet on the East Coast and a poet on the West Coast. Their environments and, therefore, their views may be vastly different at times, but their purpose is always the same. Ella Dillon and Craig Burgess wish to celebrate poetry.

Poetry should be honored as an aesthetic art and outlet for poet and reader. It shouldbe exalted for saving many in their time of need. The most effective way to celebrate poetic expression is to write poetry or to read it. Ella Dillon and Craig Burgess have written it; now you can read it.

Once two stars collided
somewhere out in space.
The result of this collision:
the birth of the human race.
or
God said
"Let life begin!"

Once at a convention
two hopeful poets met.
The result of this encounter
is not determined yet.
or God said
"Ella, meet Craig."

Ella Dillon

Audubon, New Jersey
met Wenatchee, Washington
The result of this chance meeting:
this book of praise was done.
or God said
"Faith inspires joy."

This book by dueling poets,
which you just now have read,
resulted from new friendships made
as East and West were wed.
or
God said
"Let's all rejoice!"

The Last Dance / Soothing Sounds The First Dance / Annoying Sounds
I watched the dancing snowflakes
pirouette without a sound
and wondered, do the snowflakes
only get one time around?

Are they reincarnated?
Do they get another chance?
Or must this lovely ballet
be their one and only dance?

And when the dance is over
and they melt into the earth
am I the only person
to appreciate their worth?

Soothing Sounds

Popcorn popping
cartridge brass tumbling
rain on the roof
a gurgling stream
ocean waves
a kitty's purr
a crackling fire
coffee perking
the whack whack whack
of broken tire chains
on a snowy winter night.

Ella Dillon

I watched the dancing raindrops
as they two-stepped on my lawn
and wondered: do these raindrops
dance just once before they're gone?

Of course not! They evaporate
and then will dance again
as, after changing partners
they perform in some far glen.

What I saw was their first dance
and it filled my soul with glee . . .
But who else had been witness
to God's choreography?

Annoying Sounds

Car horns honking
young children screaming
wolves in the woods
a babbling brook
jet engines
a lions roar
train whistles blowing
doorbells ringing
the crack crack crack
of icy sleet pellets
on a stormy winter night.

Craig Burgess
