Super Return of the Jedi
Released: 1994, 1995
Systems: Super Nintendo Entertainment System, Game Boy ('94), Game Gear ('95)
The Basics
Title screen.
The final Star Wars game for the SNES, Super Return of the Jedi, follows the same basic formula as the previous two installments by dividing up the game based on different scenes from the movie. Luke's Force powers, introduced in Super Empire Strikes Back, are here again. For the first time in the series, you can play as Leia.
The Details
Landspeeder
As the game begins, Luke, Leia, and Chewie race toward Jabba's palace in a landspeeder in this 3D level. There are many objects to avoid and difficult jumps.
Leia kicks some butt.
Tattooine
As either Luke, Leia (in Boushh disguise), or Chewbacca, you battle through the Tattooine desert on your way to rescue Han from Jabba's palace, where he is frozen in carbonite.
Jabba's Dance Hall/Jabba's Palace
More foul creatures focus their energy on stopping you from reaching that vile gangster known as Jabba the Hutt.
Rancor Pit
Don't be the Rancor's next meal.
Sail Barge
First, you've got to get to Jabba's floating sail barge. But once you're inside, you know what to do... blow it up!
Speederbike race.
Endor Speederbikes
This is a recreation of what is probably the most famous scene of the movie: the speederbike race through the forest on Endor. Using Mode 7 scaling effects to simulate a 3D environment, the object is to shoot down ten enemy speederbikes.
Wicket saves his village.
Ewok Village
This is your only chance in the whole history of Star Wars video games to be an ewok (excluding the unreleased Ewok Adventure). You control Wicket the ewok as he tries to protect his village from invading stormtroopers and a bunch of other nasty organisms.
Endor - Luke
Luke fights his way through Endor as he senses a disturbance in the Force.
Millennium Falcon
"It's a trap!" Above Endor, the Millennium Falcon's got trouble. Shoot down 12 TIE fighters.
Power Generator
The rebel fleet is depending on you. Destroy the power generator that is controlling the shield surrounding the Death Star.
Inside the Death Star
Luke's troubles never end as he traverses through the enemy-filled Death Star.
Millennium Falcon Third Person
"I knew they'd get that shield down!" Time's running out, so blast through the Death Star's outer defenses by shooting 20 TIE fighters.
Darth Vader
Tower/Tower - Enter Vader
Luke makes his way through the Death Star to the showdown with Vader.
The emperor awaits.
Emperor's Chamber
"Now, young Skywalker, you will die..." So, says the Emperor, and he's probably right, too. With Force bolts streaming out of his hands, what chance does the last of the Jedi have? It might take a little help from your father...
The final approach through the Death Star.
Death Star
With the emperor defeated, all that's left is to destroy the second Death Star. In this 3D level, you'll do just that by surging through its innards and blasting the core. But once that's done, the fun's not over yet. You've got to outrace the explosion, so kick the Falcon into high gear and race for the exit.
The Verdict
The Super Star Wars series goes out with a bang (literally) as the folks at LucasArts have refined their craft to the highest degree. The only problem is it's still insanely difficult.
