Super Empire Strikes Back
Released: 1993
Systems: Super Nintendo Entertainment System
The Basics
The SNES' second installment of the Star Wars Trilogy is based (surprise, surprise) on the second movie of the series, The Empire Strikes Back. However, since this is the Super Nintendo we're talking about, and since just about every game for this system had the word "super" before the title, this game's real name is Super Empire Strikes Back.
New in this game are the introduction of Luke's Force powers: mind control, elevation, slowdown, saber control, saber deflect, freeze, invisible, and heal.
The Details
As in Super Star Wars, you guide Luke, Han, and Chewbacca through events and locations from the movie, including Hoth, Dagobah, and Cloud City.
Hoth
Luke on Hoth.
An imperial probe droid has landed somewhere on Hoth, the ice world where the secret rebel base is located. You control Luke as he traverses the snowy landscape in search of the probe. Along the way, you find your tauntaun, who protects you from damage. After finding and destroying the probe, you discover that the rebel base has been overrun by imperial troops. Guide Luke to his snowspeeder to begin the battle against the empire's AT-ATs!
Snowspeeder
Snowspeeder action.
In this 3D level, you control a rebel snowspeeder as it races over Hoth. Your first goal is to destroy ten probe droids and ten bikers. After that, you must destroy five AT-ST walkers and five AT-AT walkers. With a lot of practice, you can connect your tow cable to an AT-AT and fly around it until the cable is tangled around its legs, which will cause it to collapse.
With the enemy forces weakened, the action then moves to a side-scrolling perspective. After a few more minutes of battle in the snowspeeder, you land and continue the conflict on foot. Head toward the AT-AT and blast your way inside. Your objective is to destroy it from the inside.
Rebel Base
Once Luke destroys the AT-AT, you switch to Han as he makes his way through the rebel base trying to reach the Millennium Falcon.
Millennium Falcon
Once inside the Falcon, you take control from a 3D first-person perspective inside the cockpit. On your way to Cloud City, you must destroy 20 TIE fighters while avoiding asteroids and enemy missiles.
Dagobah
The action then shifts back to Luke and his Jedi training with Yoda. Dagobah is a dangerous place teeming with strange creatures, so be careful.
Cloud City
For the next few levels, you will switch off between Han and Chewbacca as they make their way through Cloud City.
X-Wing
Luke is trying to make his way to Cloud City in this 3D level, but 15 cloud cars stand in his way.
Luke in Cloud City
Vader approaches.
Prepare for the final confrontation with Darth Vader over Cloud City.
The Verdict
If you thought Super Star Wars looked and sounded good, wait until you see Super Empire Strikes Back. On the gameplay side, it is slightly less frustrating than Super Star Wars, but is still way too difficult even on the easiest setting. The addition of the Force powers is a welcome, if minor, innovation.
