Star Wars Trilogy
Released: 1998
Systems: Arcade
The Basics
Select your stage.
Star Wars Trilogy takes the most memorable moments from the three Star Wars films and wraps them up into a single arcade package. Gameplay is reminiscent of the first Star Wars arcade game as well as other Sega first-person shooters like Jurassic Park: The Lost World. You usually don't have to worry about your movements, since they are mostly taken care of for you. You control only the targeting cursor, the fire button, and the event buttons.
The Details
Watch out for the droids!
The game is divided into six basic stages, each taking its action from a specific scene or sequence from the trilogy. There are three to choose from at the beginning: Yavin, Hoth, and Endor Forest.
Yavin
Destroying the Death Star has always been a major attraction in Star Wars video games, and this one is no different. The setup of this stage is very similar to Atari's Star Wars arcade game and is broken down into three areas: a TIE fighter dogfight, a battle over the Death Star surface, and the flight through the Death Star trench.
Hoth
The Battle of Hoth.
AT-STs and AT-ATs litter the Hoth landscape, so blast away. Unfortunately, that's all you can do. (No tow cables here.) Next, you're on foot inside the rebel base shooting at imperial troops.
"Boba Fett! Where?"
Duel with Boba Fett
The object of this level is to deflect Fett's laser blasts back at him until he is defeated.
Endor Forest
This level starts you out on a speederbike traveling at a dangerously high velocity. Aim your targeting cursor and clear the path of stormtroopers while steering clear of trees and the occasional AT-ST that appears. Then, you're back on foot, with the destruction of the shield generator as your ultimate goal.
Duel with Darth Vader
Finally, you come face to face with the dark lord of the Sith himself, the evil Darth Vader.
Endor Space
It's time to destroy the Death Star yet again. This time, you're in the Millennium Falcon.
The second Death Star.
The Verdict
Star Wars Trilogy is an amazing tour-de-force of graphics and sound using Sega's Model 3 arcade board. With its force-feedback joystick and seat, this game puts you in the center of the action and really gives you a workout. But all this fun comes at a steep price. The days of 25 cent and even 50 cent arcade games are long gone, and the term "quarter-muncher" just doesn't apply here. "Dollar-grabber" seems more appropriate, but who said perfection was cheap?
