Dark Forces
Released: 1996
Systems: Sony PlayStation

The Basics

Imperial officer, dead ahead.
Dark Forces is a Doom-style first-person shooter featuring the adventures of Kyle Katarn, a freelance operative working for the Rebel Alliance. His mission? Infiltrate an imperial base and obtain the top-secret plans for the Death Star. But once that mission is complete, Katarn and the rebels stumble upon a new imperial weapon that may mean the end for the alliance: the dark trooper.

The Details

Head for the door.
As in Doom, you'll spend most of your time in Dark Forces traveling through labyrinthine levels while blasting away at enemies. The main adversaries you'll face are stormtroopers, imperial officers, and imperial commandos. Lucky for you, the following weapons can be found throughout the game: modified Bryar pistol, stormtrooper laser rifle, thermal detonator, imperial repeater gun, Jeron fusion cutter, IM mines, packered mortar gun, and Stouker concussion rifle.

Another one bites the dust.
Mission 1: The Death Star Plans
Obtain the secret Death Star plans and get back to your ship.

Mission 2: After the Massacre
Restart the power on the Tak base and locate information about the new dark troopers.

Mission 3: The Subterranean Hideout
Find Moff Rebus, an imperial weapons expert.

This looks interesting...
Mission 4: Imperial Weapons Research Facility
Make your way through the facility on Fest and return with a sample of the empire's new metal.

Mission 5: The Blood Moon
Destroy the main reactor of the Gromas mines.

Mission 6: Crix Madine's Fate
Locate Crix Madine.

Mission 7: Deadly Cargo
Attach a tracking device to the smuggling ship.

Mission 8: Ice Station Beta
Set three explosive charges and return to your ship.

Mission 9: The Death Mark
Find evidence of imperial navigation.

Mission 10: Jabba's Revenge
Rescue Jan Ors.

Mission 11: The Imperial Mask
Obtain the decoded data tapes and defeat Boba Fett.

Back to the ship.
Mission 12: Smuggler's Hijack
Board and hijack the smuggler's ship.

Mission 13: The Stowaway
Take a ride on Darth Vader's star destroyer, the Executor, and sneak your way onto a cargo shuttle that will take you to the arc hammer.

Mission 14: The Dark Awakening
Set explosive charges to destroy the arc hammer and the dark trooper project.

The Verdict
If you still enjoy playing Doom, you'll probably like Dark Forces as well. It was released in the early days of the PlayStation, and it shows. You'd think the Star Wars atmosphere would help to make up for the murky, pixelated graphics and choppy scaling, but it doesn't. In a few years, Dark Forces may be looked upon as a classic, but right now, it just seems dated.
