The Abraham Connection

During the 1997 reunion in Salonika Ed Motola was so kind to give me a copy of the genealogies that he and Moshe have compiled during the last three years. I would like to confirm the links and lineages that were concluded on basis on family interviews.

One of the most apparant facts was the frequent reoccurance of the name Abraham Saltiel in the 19th century. It seems that almost each branch of the Salonikan family originates in an Abraham Saltiel. These were the Abrahams that I found:

Early 19th century:
Abraham Saltiel, born ca. 1809, father of Moshe.
Abraham (ben Moshe) Saltiel, ca. 1820, married to Lucha "Carassica" Carasso, father of Shimon, Yehuda, Aron, Moshe, Bolisa and Miriam.

Middle 19th century:
Abraham "el malo" Saltiel, ca. 1840, married to Gracia, father of Jacob, Obadia, Samuel and Pava.
(Abraham) Saltiel, ca. 1840, father of Haim "Victor" and
Sabetai.
(Abraham) Saltiel, ca. 1855, married to Mirjam?, father to Semtov, Salomon, Esther, Dudun and Estrella.
Rabbi Abraham Saltiel, born ca. 1845, father of Moshe, Yosef and Saltiel.
Abraham ben Eliau Saltiel, born ca. 1845, married to Hurcy, father of Elias and Semtov.
Abraham Saltiel, born ca. 1850, father of Bea, Shabtai and
Michael.
Abraham Saltiel, born ca. 1850, father of Jacob and 11 more
children.
Abraham ben Yosef Saltiel, born ca. 1855, married to Hannah Nahama, father of Isaac, Sara, Jose and Jacobo.
Abraham ben Saul Saltiel, born ca. 1855, married to Sarah, father of Miriam, Saul, Palomba, Moise, Dudun, Yakov, Hasdai and Isaac.

Late 19th century:
Abraham ben Yosef Saltiel, born ca. 1867, married to Sarah Gateno, father of Sol, Regina, Dora, Rebeca and Jose.
Abraham ben Shimon Saltiel, born ca. 1878, father of Elda, Miriam, Jacob, Shimon, Rivka and Malka.
Abraham Saltiel, born ca. 1879, no known children (brother of Moshe, Yosef and Rachel)
Abraham ben Aron Saltiel, 1880-1935, married to Lucie, father of Aron (moved to Israel)
Abraham ben Samuel Saltiel, born 1882, married to Regina Angel, father of Leila and Mathilde.
Abraham Saltiel, born ca. 1901, married to Julia Saltiel, father of Victorine, Mathilde, Samuel, Frateli, Isidor.

I am sure that some of these Abrahams must be identical. The
estimated dates of birth groups these Abrahams into three groups:
Early 19th century (1800-1830), Middle 19th century (1840-1860) and late 19th century (1870-1890). The Abrahams of whom we do not know the name of the father could very well be identical with another Abraham of whom we do not know the name of the wife. It is hard to say if we know all the names of the children of a marriage. And it may even be so that one Abraham was married more than once and had
children by both wives. Emigration would eventually have the effect that the names of other siblings were not remembered.

Please contact me if you think that you have additional information about any Abraham Saltiel in this list. I will be glad to let you know which of these is your ancestor.
