This page gives you an update on the researches and investigations which are currently being undertaken in our family during the summer of 1999. We continue to examine the many fascinating links to our family history.

A) At present, investigations are going on to establish the link between the newly discovered Brazilian branch of Saltiels, who seem to have their origine in Germany or France. The new Shealtiel Gazette will print an update of the results of this investigation.

B) We are also looking for people who will help us do some research in their local area. There is still much to be found. The tombstones at the Jewish Cemetary in Sofia contain several references to Saltiels. Who would like to make an inventory of these inscriptions?

C) The weekly ladino newspaper of Salonika "La Epoca" was published from 1874-1911. Claude Missistrano from Paris has done a survey of the years 1891-1897 and he wrote an article about it in ETSI. There are several marriage announcements that refer to Saltiel. The collection of the years 1874-1898 is preserved in the library of l'Alliance Israelite Universelle at 45, Rue la Bruyere, Paris IX. If you can read Hebrew script and live nearby, you could help Claude and us to extend this survey with the names of the Saltiels who married in Salonika in the late 19th century.

D) Another link to France is a letter from the year 1939, which madam Marguerite Scialtiel from Paris sent to a British publisher in London: J. M. Dent & Sons Ltd. Marguerite worked for the Red Cross in Paris, where she kept an office. Scialtiel is the Italian spelling variation of our name, and I would be very interested to know more about Marguerite Scialtiel. She still lives in Paris and must be a very old lady. I am looking for one of our french cousins to contact and interview her.

E) Michael Studemund-Levy is the author of the book "Die Sepharden in Hamburg". The book gives several references to the Sealtiel family of Hamburg, and publishes a German translation of the Hebrew interview "My Fathers House" with General David Shaltiel. I am looking for someone who can help translate the interview into English, so that we can publish it in our family publication The Shealtiel Gazette.

Click on the highlighted link if you want to read about other historical discoveries by the members of our family.
