One of the problems connected with Sephardic genealogy is the world-wide dispersion of families in the Diaspora. With the introduction of the World Wide Web there now is a sollution how to overcome this problem. On this page you will find some suggestions where to look for information about your ancestors. I have added those sources where I found interesting new information when I was searching for information about my own ancestors, the Shealtiels. I have also added links to intersting articles and websites on Sephardic history in general.
Please inform me if you know other sites which would be of interest to investigators of Sephardic genealogy or history.

Warning: Remember that when once started, genealogical research never ends. When I started my investigations in 1992 I had no idea what the outcome would be. You can see the result at the website of the Shealtiel family worldwide http://www.shealtiel.org
Remember that first you should record the information that older family members have on the history of your family. Tape the interviews and ask for copies of documents and pictures. This information will be priceless to you later.
A good starting point would be http://www.jewishgen.org where you can find other researchers of your family name, and learn the possible variations of the spellings of your name through a soundex search of their genealogical files. Also remember to inform other reseachers which families you investigate. You can subscribe to the Sephardic maillist at JewishGen which will give you valuable information about other people researches and books to read. Check the archives of maillists or take a look the guestbook at http://www.webcom.com/rel for reference to your family name.
At http://www.sephardiconnect.com you can select the forum genealogy/namesearch and then post a message about the families that you are investigating.
Now you should start looking for your relatives. On the Internet you can find their addresses and information about their professions, hobbies and business activities so that you will know what kind of people they are.
http://www.bigfoot.com and http://www.whowhere.com are the starting points for (email) addresses. At Whowhere you can consult international telephone books http://www.whowhere.lycos.com/wwphone/world.html, and they also have an option where your can find your ancestors. The best internet search engines are http://www.hotbot.com which gives you 100 results in one page, and you can refine your search with more words, at http://www.northernlight.com the results are selected in folders on subject. I suggest that you copy any interesting URL and information to a Word document for future use. Postings by your relatives on maillists can be found at http://www.dejanews.com
If you want to search several engines in one try
http://users.penn.com/~pompeii/quicksearch2.html
If you would like to subscribe to more maillists
http://www.shamash.org/help/listoflists.html
The best links to articles on Sephardic genealogy can be found at http://www.orthohelp.com/geneal/sefardim.htm
You can find a list of all known Sephardic surnames, lists of Holocaust victims, genealogies, Sephardic history, traditions and much more...
There is also a very interesting site at http://www.sefarad.org/ in three languages by the European Sephardic Institute. Back issues of their publication "Los Muestros" are published online. ETSI The Sephardi genealogical and historical society have their own publication in French and English.
Familytreemaker is a commercial site which gives you the opportunity to publish your family tree online. There are some valuable links, eg. to the Social Security death index, (you can search on soundex) http://www.familytreemaker.com
Last but not least you will find a list of almost 40.000 genealogical Internet links at http://www.CyndisList.com
Good luck with your research! |
