NEW DISCOVERIES

Here you can read some of the new discoveries that members of our family have done. If you have more information which you would like to add to this page, questions or comments to the discoveries by other family members please send an email to vibekeolsen@yahoo.com

"Virgin at Prayer" an oil painting in the Royal Chapel (room XIV) at the Royal Palace of Napoli (Il Museo di Palazzo Reale) was painted by SAVERIO SALTELLI during the 1640s see http://www.cib.na.cnr.it/preale/palace/ind.html
This gives us another clue to the position of the Saltelli family in 17th century Italy.

SALTIEL SAPPORTA
I found a tombstone of Saltiel Sapporta in the museum in Gerona. I guess Sapporta was his mother's family name. They have that tombstone in the museum and it is dated 1311. I have photos of it and I can send you some...

Leon Saltiel, Greece

Comments: the tomb stone in Girona is not of a Shaltiel, it is a Saporta with Shaltiel as his first name. Saporta is the family of the Ramban which were as far from our family as possible. If fact they were the main antagonist of the Shaltiel family. More details in my book. Moshe

MOTOLA LINK WITH MOISE
Based on information that Dina Barag gave to Ed Motola at the reunion in Thessaloniki in 1997, I have been able to link his family to the family of Moise Saltiel of Paris. Dina Barag said that Abraham, the grandfather of Corina Saltiel, had a brother named Moshe. Moshe must be identical with Moise, the grandfather of Moise of Paris. Abraham and Moise both named their three sons Josef (the name of their father), Jacob and Isaac. So Corina Saltiel Abouaf is the second cousin of Moise Saltiel of Paris! The identical names of the three sons seem to confirm this link.

TOLRANA=MARIA DEL SALTO?
This is my suggestion to explain Maria del Salto was said to be the originator of the Saltiel name: Maria del Salto was said to have jumped from a cloister wall to escape conversion. Maybe this identifies her with Tolrana Saltiel, who jumped from the tower on Gerona after beheading her children. The name Del Salto may in fact be corrupted from Saltelli. I discovered that the Italian word Saltelli means leaping (see http://www.calciatori.com/magazine/0398_pa.html)
Saltelli was the name given to descendants of the Saltel family when they moved to Italy (jfr. Kristen Saltelli). So based upon a misunderstanding of the name Saltelli, the Italian name was translated back into Spanish as Del Salto. So I think that the reference that Sari Mayer made to Maria del Salto could be based upon the story about Tolrana Saltiel of Gerona.

Re: Tolrana=Maria del Salto?
A similar idea occured to me after seeing the film and I agree that this hypothetical identification has merit. I will work up language to this effect for the next issue of the "History".

LONDON - NORTH SEA BRANCH

I have the updated the "London" branch following the information obtained from Helga Heilbut, Herman Bredl, Erwin Hirsch, Kenneth Hale, Tom Layton and you. The founder of the branch was Isaac Saltiel of London (1700 CE). I now believe that Isaac was the son of Elias Shealtiel who left the Island of Crete around 1670 CE. Elias (in Hebrew Eliyahu) was the most prominent Jew on the island, the owner of our Coat of Arms and a direct descendant of Zerachia Ben Shealtiel-Chen (Gracian) of Barcelona, the famous philosopher, translator physician and rabbi who, among his many works, translated Maimonides medical works from Arabic to Hebrew and Latin, and wrote a well-known treaty on Aristotle. The family was known to collect rare books and they were the owners of the Shealtiel HAGADDAH now in the British Museum.

It was decided to try a new concept for the GROup in 1999. The new discoveries and the aims of the GROup will be published on this website. I hope this will encourage you to join the GROup. The GROup members who do not have access to the Internet will receive the news through snailmail.

The aims of the GROup in 1999 are:

GENEALOGY
*Find the links between new found families and our Shealtiel family tree
*Discuss the possiblities for a reconstruction of the Salonika tree back into the 18th and 19th centuries.

RESEARCH
*Continue the researches on the history of our family and share discoveries with each other on this website.
*Publish articles about the history of our family in the Shealtiel Gaztte

OUTREACH
*Find volunteers who will each make contact with 15-20 families in their local area
*More subscribers to our family publications
*To establish regular contact with more members of the family

If you have decided that you would like to join us now:
