To all the Family Network Volunteers:
This letter is to inform you about my idea to found the outreach group so that all people with the name Shealtiel will be able to stay in contact with each other. I intend to establish a network of local volunteers that provides us with information about the Saltiel families from evey region. I rely on these volunteers to distribute information to "their" families. All volunteers receive a letter of information and a list of addresses. I suggest to add the network of family volunteers to the official structure of the SFWA "Outreach Comittee".
I also would suggest to include an Genealogical and Historical Comittee to the SFWA. This could be combined with the Outreach Comittee under the name "GROup Comittee".
I would volunteer to be a SFWA representative as the coordinator of this comittee.

I have realized that I would never be able to stay in contact with all 700 Shealtiel families worldwide myself. I even can't keep up correspondance with the people that I met during the past three reunions. But I would like you to remain part of my life and in my thought somehow. So I came up with this solution: the creation of a family network. My idea was to send you this newsletter, asking you to forward it to 20 other members of the family. In this way we can reach out to 400 families, whom I hope will also be interested in this initiative. Through the Asovrindar newsletter I will keep you updated about the progress of this endeavour. If I get response and information from any of these families, I will include it in the next issue of Asovrindar, and I will send it to you. In this way we will remain informed about each other lives, birth, marriages and new found families, as well as the research which is done by the members of the GROup. Please help me with this initiative. Make 20 copies of Asovrindar and send it to the Saltiels in your area!

This is a list of the regions and countries which are covered through this project:

Youngsters world - Kevin Hale. Netherlands - Josephine Sealtiel, Max Sealtiel
England - Ross Lewis, Della Saltiel. Germany and Austria - Helga Heilbut.
France and Belgium - Marion, Matthew and Thomas Saltiel.
South America, Puerto Rico and Cuba - Francesca & Alex Carasso.
Mexico - Jorge Saltijeral and Ed Motola. Central USA - Jay & Fran London.
North East USA and East Canada - Victor & Tmima Saltiel.
South East USA - Albert & Maxa Saltiel. South West USA - Bob & Terry Saltiel.
North West USA and West Canada - Alice Saltiel Marshall.
Israel - Amos & Liora, Hava & David, Sam & Kay, Mony Saltiel.
Turkey - Marianne Saltiel. Greece, Italy and Zwitserland - Alain Chekroun.
North Afrika, France and Italy - Frederique Cheltiel. Antipodes - Lynette Grave.

A member of the family gave me the idea how we can distribute Asovrindar to the family. As you see I have included a list with the names of ca. 20 people. I would like you to make 20 photocopies of this issue of the Asovrindar newsletter, and to mail one copy to each of the people in this list. Please include a personal note with your name and phone number so that the people whom receive Asovrindar from you can contact you directly. If you receive any response from one of the people in the list, I kindly request you to inform me about it. You could make a record of each family and use it when you have been in contact with the person in question, to make note of what you have talked about. When you pass information to me, please mention the family code that is listed before each addess, as I can use this to distinguish between all the people with the same name.
I hope that my idea appeals to you and that we can work together with this.

ASOVRINDAR 3rd issue, Summer 2000
*************************************************************************
This issue of Asovrindar is dedicated to Miles Saltiel, because of his editorship of the Shealtiel Gazette between the years 1995-2000, and the countless other things he did for the family network. The issue of Asovrindar deals with the creation of the Shealtiel Family World Association (SFWA), and with the future of the Shealtiel Gazette and the family network.

Below are two email messages which I sent to more than 500 Shealtiels on the Internet. These could become topic of discussion as a message board has been added to our official family website at http://www.shealtiel.org

You can put a message on the website which visitors to the Internet can read. As far as I know, the message board is not moderated, so there may be messages whose contents you do not agree with. I think this is a good way so that we stay in contact with each other.
My own website at http://maxpages.com/donadeli is still operational and being updated.

Two more months to go before our International Shealtiel Family Reunion in Barcelona. You can still decide to go - and get yourself a new view on carrying the name SALTIEL!

Comments to the Shealtiel Family Network:
"...For countless years during my travels, I have tried to find people bearing the same family name. (At our family reunion) I counted 150... We were already proud of being called Saltiel, and since this worthwhile gathering we are even more so." (Maurice Saltiel)
"...(We are inspired) with the certainty that the family will work together to build on the success of the last reunion..." (Phillipe)
"...As far as who handles the "meat" of the business, we must rely on volunteers." (Bob)
"...I hope the meeting will be peaceful..." (Aviva)
"...We should be nice to each other!" (Deddy)
"...It has always been my intention that the Family Network should be like a "safe haven" where every member of the family could feel at home." (Vibeke)
"...I see the family as a theatre where everybody has a role on the scene. I am interested in working to get people meet, to be happy and learn together as a family. If people have different attitutes, so let's try to find a common point". (Herman)
"...The current activities are great!" (Fran)
"...We must put all our efforts to distribute the Gazette by all means." (Moni)
"...Why not have an online meeting/gathering via the "chat" program ICQ?" (Joseph)
"...In times like these, we are not more than Moses who, when he walked in the desert, had no signs to direct him. I want to show the next generation where to go. To know where to go, one must learn where he or she has come from." (Rob)
"...Heaven forbid that we should see ourselves as "saviours of the world". Whew! (Miles)
"...Shealtielim son Reyes!" (Moshe)
"...What a wonderful lore of oral history to spin tales with for our grand children...If such a faith motivates us to live virtuous and exemplary lives, then to mind, a Godly purpose is fulfilled..." (Ed)
"...Spending time with the Saltiel family had a profound impact on my thinking about the importance of family and my faith in community!" (David)

SFWA STRUCTURE
Now let me share with you who are not on the Web some information on the structure of
the SFWA. Those online can find the information at http://maxpages.com/donadeli/SFWA

During the constitutional meeting the following issues were discussed and decided:
1) We should be a non-profit and non-commercial organization. No member is allowed to engage in financial transactions on behalf of the Association before approval by board.
2) There will be no compensation for expences by members except by prior approval by the financial comittee (written authorisation with an annual budget)
3) The BOARD is decision making and is seperated from the COMMISIONS who are active members of the Association and whom report to the board (annually?).
4) No member can represent the Association before approval by the board.
5) The Shealtiel Gazette is the expression of the Association. Annual subscription includes the Shealtiel Gazette. A member of the family organisation is entitled to receive one copy of each Gazette issue. The annual subscription fee including the Gazette is $60 USD.

AIMS OF THE GROUP IN 2000-2001

We will send a rescue mission to find the family of Liege Saltiel Webber of Brazil. Alex Carasso had volunteered his help, so I have sent him the new address of Liege. We will keep you informed about the outcome of this mission, and hope to succeed to maintain contact with the Von Saltiels.

With this issue of Asovrindar, I forwarded you a list of ca. 20 addresses, which I would like you to contact. The GROup is still not officially embedded in the structure of the SFWA, but it is my intention to suggest that we should become the ears and eyes of the Shealtiel family association, and therefore I ask you to help me prove the succes of the outreach programme. It is essential to make and keep in contact with the families in your local area. I hope that you will be able to do this, to motivate the family to become a member of the SFWA (and subscribe to the Shealtiel Gazette), to inform new-found families about our family network, to promote local activities and regional reunions, and also very important: to keep me informed about the progress that you make with this.

It is my aim to add French, English and Spanish (Ladino) summaries to each issue of the Gazette and I have asked the following people to help me with this:

French - Alain Chekroun
Hebrew - Hava Shaltiel
Spanish - Francesca Carasso
Ladino - Selma Palmer

NEW RESEARCH

Helga Heilbut has recently sent me a report on what she discovered about the Sealtiel family of Germany. Those of you who read the last issue of the Gazette will be familiar with those people. For those of you who did not yet receave the 5th anniversary Gazette, this family are the descendants of Joseph Saltiel, who emigrated from Amsterdam to Hamburg in in 1808. Helga sent me an email with the names of Sealtiels from Hamburg:

Dear Vibeke, just a short note before Hellfried and I are leaving for Barcelona. We both are looking forward to met many new people, with whom Hellfried is related. I will bring a photo from Benvenida and Simon Jacob Heilbut along, as well as a picture of their gravestone from Hamburg. Also a few (many) different family trees will be in my suitcase, so that every one who is interested in this Hamburg part of the family can try to read it. I was in Hamburg a few weeks ago and read through the Hamburger Fremdenblatt, a newspaper. I found out the following:

Engagement 25.11.1871: Fanny Sealtiel and D. Heertje
Golden Wedding Rememberance: M. Piza and Frau geb. Sealtiel 6.7.1871
(Hana, daughter of Joseph Elias Sealtiels first marriage), Altona # 1821
Engagement 27.3.1872: Dr. Hermann Sealtiel and Fanny Boas, Berlin
(this is perhaps the connection to Tibor and Heiner Saltiel)

Adressbuch Hamburg 1870:
Sealtiel B. Grosser Neumarkt 32 (Benjamin)
Sealtiel E. J. Handelsmann, beim Hafenthor 1 (Elias Joseph)
Sealtiel Fanny, Schneiderin, Neuer Wall 78
Sealtiel S. J. 2. Marienstrasse hinter 18 (Samuel Joseph)

Adressbuch Hamburg 1875:
Sealtiel B. Grosser Neumarkt 32 (Benjamin)
Sealtiel D. i.F.Wagner, Herrenweide 32
Sealtiel S.J. Herrenweide 31 a

Adressbuch Hamburg 1880:
Vorsteher der portugiesisch-juedischen Gemeinde: M. Sealtiel, Paulstr. 25 (Mordechai ?)
Sealtiel B. Grosser Neumarkt 32 (Benjamin)
Sealtiel D. Buchhalter, Kraienkamp 20 III
Sealtiel D. i.F.Wagner, Kraienkamp 17
Sealtiel M. Paulstr. 25
Sealtiel S.J. Handelsmann, Kraienkamp 17

Adressbuch Hamburg 1885:
Sealtiel M. Hutfabrik, Berthastr. 18
Sealtiel W. Papenhuderstr. 5
Sealtiel D. Buchhalter, Kraienkamp 20 III
Sealtiel D. i.F.Wagner, Kraienkamp 17
Sealtiel Fanny, Schneiderin, Dammthor 3a
Sealtiel S.J. Handelsmann, Kraienkamp 17

I hope that you can do something with this information. Maybe M. Sealtiel is the
Mordechai who asked for a passport to Chile. He was mentioned to be the Vorsteher together with A. Ricardo-Rocamora, beeidigter Beamter, 1. Marktstr. 17 in 1880. In the Hamburger Adressbuch from 1870 A. Ricardo-Rocamora is mentioned as a collecteur of the Synagogue. Until now I could not find out who Fanny Sealtiel is. Though her engagement is announced (in 1871) she was not married in 1885. The first entrance into an Hamburger Adressbuch I found out was the earliest in 1835. So the Sealtiels must have been very poor, because you had to pay for the entrance.

Noemi Zagha sent a letter about her family:

Let me first of all introduce myself. My name is Noemi Zagha and I'm the granddaughter of Gracia Bachrach née Sealtiel form Hamburg. We met at the reunion of the Sealtiel family in Barcelona. Please find enclosed, as I promised you the menu of the wedding of my grandfather. You asked me to write of myself. Well I was born in 4th of March 1937 in Haifa, Israel. Went to school and to a youth movement in Haifa, in 1955 I went to the army for two years. In 1957 I moved to Jerusalem, where first I studied my B.A. degree in the Hebrew University. On 30th March 1965 I got married to Mozhe Zagha and we have no children. I worked for 35 years for the government and retired three years ago, that about what I can tell you. Hope to hear from you soon. Noemi Zagha.

The last letter from Liege Saltiel Webber
Date: Thu, 16 Dec 1999

Hi Vibeke, how are you? I received your card but I couldn't write to you until now.
I was travelling and could not write to anybody. I changed my address. The new one is:

Rua Dr. Timoteo, 416/514, Porto Alegre - RS, Brasil CEP 90540-020.

I read all the messages and didn't decide about Barcelona, but the travel is in my plans.
I hope I can go to have the pleasure to meet all of you. Last weekend we made the VIIth meeting of the Saltiels here in Brasil, with more than 180 family members. Later I will send you the list of all who came to the meeting. I have told my cousins about you and the other Saltiels in the world, and I also gave them the related sites and addresses.

With caress of your cousin,

Liege

THE DAVIDIC LEGEND OF THE SHEALTIEL FAMILY

There is one thing that all the Shealtiel families have in common, regardless of where we live, who we are and what we believe. Each branch of the family carries on the ancient family tradition that we are the descendants of king David. This tradition has been kept alive from father to son, grandparent to grandchildren through countless centuries. Each one of our (common) ancestors was proud to be of the royal line of the house of Juda. This was the heritage which they passed on to their children and which is still known today.

With the DNA testing of the family taking place this year, this seems the right moment to collect the Davidic memories of the individual Shealtiels who are aware of this tradition. The legend was told both in the North Sea and the Salonikan branches of the family. I am sure that it was also told by the Chaltiels and Cheltiels of North Afrika though I am still to hear their (hi)story. I can tell you that in Amsterdam the Sealtiels used to say: Our family are the descendants of king David! We were all aware that the name was mentioned in the Bible, and took pride in the fact that our family name had survived for more than two thousand years. The Sealtiels where very proud about their name. There has been lots of confrontations with municipal clerks who forgot to add the trema about the second E, which is an inherrant part of our name: Sealtiël. Josephine Sealtiël recalled that as a young girl, her father scorned her for pronouncing her family name wrongly when answering the phone. Her father said "you should be proud of this special name with its precious history, and don't you corrupt it again, otherwise you are not worthy to carry the name Sealtiël". After moving city, Josephine was registered without the trema on the E, but she is planning to bring her birth certificate to the city office to have the error corrected.

Josephine also knows the family tradition that we supposedly were related to Ras Markonnen, aka Haile Selassie, the king of Ethiopia, and she told me that the Shealtiels of Spain sponsored the trip of Christoffer Colombus, before the family moved to Sicily in Italy. The story of the Davidic origine was also told by General David Shaltiel of Hamburg, which proves that it must date back to before 1829, when his ancestor emigrated to Hamburg from Amsterdam. But we can follow the tradition even further back. The Sephardim recognized the Shealtiels as being of a noble family, and the coat of arms of crete has a lion carrying royal regalia on its head and in its paws. Prof. Shmuel Shaltiel told Moshe Shaltiel the oral tradition "Shealtielim son Reyes". I think that there are several other stories that I have not heard yet, and I would be very interested to hear yours. If you have a family tradition that your Saltiel ancestor was of royal birth, if you grandfather behaved like royalty, if they told you to keep your noble origine in mind, not to misbehave because "nobility obligue", or if your children rebelled against this, please share the story with me, because our history is alive and is still being written. In the new millenium we Shealtiels are still here. Who knows where G-d will bring us in the future?
