The ASOVRINDAR MAGAZINE - Edited by Vibeke Sealtiel Olsen

The 1999 edition of the ASOVRINDAR magazine is dedicated to Maurice Saltiel from Villiers-sur-Marne, France. Since 1994, Maurice was the editor of the Trait d'Union, the french newsletter for the Saltiel family. Maurice is now age 87, and has decided to retire as the editor of Trait d'Union. Your can read his letter to the family here.

This online issue of Asovrindar has its focus on the international reunion of our family in Spain next year. You can read the last news about our family reunion if you click on the blue link.

Los Muestros published the article which I wrote about the activities that lead to the first international Shealtiel family reunion.

Are you related to Rachel and Vitali J. Salti from Istanbul, TURKEY? If these are your relatives then you may be heir to the dormant deposit at their swiss bank account. You can find more information at
http://www.jewishgen.org/ajgs/ajgs-swissaccts.html

I have written two articles which I would like to present to you today. If you are interested in Sephardic culture you will probably like it. My first article is about Sephardic Romanzas Our musical heritage is a subject that keeps fascinating me. Second, a summary of my archaeological thesis on the distribution of kosher chicken leads in the 18th century Jewish quarter of Amsterdam.

PESACH 1999 LETTERS FROM THE FAMILY

Happy Passover and Happy Eastern to you and your family! I hope that they will be wonderful days, that the bunnyrabbits will bring a lot of eggs and that we will all gather for Pesach 2003 in Jerusalem.

I hope I will see you next year in Barcelona...

Best wishes,

Vibeke

About Eastern traditions:

Danish tradition is to hide eastern eggs in the garden, and then send the children looking for those in the morning. Painting the eggs is also a favourite among the kids (dripping the eggs with stearin and then boiling them in water with onion shell guarantees artistic patterns.

There is a game where you can roll eggs down a hill and the person to whom the egg belongs which does not break is the winner. You can also bang two eggs against each other and see which egg breaks first.

Archaeologist 1: I have the impression that many of these traditions date back to the Viking Age!
Question: Can you imagine vikings running around and rolling coloured eggs down a hill?
Archaeologist 2: I wonder where they got the chicken that laid the egg, maybe they stole it from the Roman Army....

Thank you for your Passover wishes. It is very nice to be in touch. Our custom on Pessah is to bake the eggs in a slow oven for a long time with a lot of onion skins and a little oil so they can look shinning. The eggs gets brownish on the outside. We called them "ouevos enhaminados". It is the Sepharadic of Salonika trade mark. I still do them to this day. Another tradition we had during Pessah was to have all our family and friends for the seder and the next day go and visit grandparents and family, and usually we will give the boys eggs but not the girls. Wishing you a happy and a healthy Pessah and with Gods help to see you in
Barcelona.

LOVE, DORA SALTIEL

Thanks for the holiday greetings. May your celebration be festive! By the way, the holiday is called Easter, after some pagan goddess, not Eastern, which is adjective denoting the easterly direction.

My children have a spring break from school that overlaps with the Easter weekend and with some of Pesach this year. We'll be driving over 2000 miles round trip to visit with my mother. My oldest daughter just turned 16 and is now a licensed driver! We'll arrive in California in time to celebrate the second seder of Pesach with Mom. Then we'll celebrate the renewal of spring by spending a night in a mountain cabin and exploring the fabulous display of wild-flower blooms in the deserts. It's also conference weekend for the Mormon church where we listen to broadcasts of inspirational talks on themes of Christ's resurrection. We might even do an easter egg hunt, which is traditional in America as well, although my children are getting a little old for that. And as a pure vegetarian, I am less inclined to decorate eggs than I am to collect wild-flower memories. It will be a full 5 days of multi-cultural celebrations!

*********

I have printed a very limited number of the 1999 issue of ASOVRINDAR magazine, only 25 copies exist of this edition. The magazine is very beautiful, format A5, with a full colour front page illustration, interesting articles and letters from the family. If you are interested in our family history, I think it would be a collectors item to have. You can have your own mint-quality mastercopy for FREE, if you like. Just write to me at vibekeolsen@yahoo.com and let me know that you want to receive a mastercopy of the ASOVRINDAR magazine.

Please notice: I will send you the magazine and the addresses of 10-15 other Saltiel families in your area. My request to you is to make 15 photocopies of your ASOVRINDAR magazine, and mail these 15 copies to the families in the address list. Not just to help me, but some of these families would be really glad to receive the magazine from you. In that way we can keep contact with each other as a family. I hope that you like to do this.
