GENEALOGY DISCUSSION between Vibeke Sealtiel Olsen and Ed Motola Saltiel, October 1997.
Vibeke: I would be glad to hear from you next month when you have done the genealogy stuff with Moshe. I really would like to hear if you find new links between the family lines. I hope that you will be able to look at my suggested links before then. I based my suggestions on the extensive SALONICA file, which you gave me at the reunion. Compared to what I have done, it seems that you have been doing so much!!
Ed Motola: Actually, I feel guilty about all that I'm not doing! You follow through so quickly and thoroughly. That you took the time to search through the SALONICA file indicates how much time you spend on researching our family.
Vibeke: I based my suggestions for links between lines on
the extensive SALONICA file. I thought that this was the most recent and updated version with the merged family trees. Was I wrong?
Ed Motola: Not all lines originating in Salonica were merged into the SALONICA file. The file MICHEL was not, and there are other new ones.
Vibeke: I believe that turkish archives contain information that none of us could ever dream about.
Ed Motola: I do too. I have hopes that these records will surface some day, and still be useable. There are also the Greek records the Israelis bought from the Russians which are being translated still.

NEW FAMILY BOOK CONTRIBUTIONS
In the winter of 1996-97 I spent most of my evenings editing the first edition of the Shealtiel Family Book. The result is a 200 page manuscript including the life stories of family members of all the countries where S(he)altiels can be found, including an index of our hobbies and
professions and welcoming the Saltel, Schattiel and Saltelli
families. It was presented to the family at the summer 1997 international Shealtiel family reunion in Thessalonika, Greece.
But much work still needs to be done: in the USA, 30 families have contributed to the family book (of 170 known addresses), in Greece just 2 families of 18 known addresses, in Israel only 10 of 79 known addresses and in France 16 of 69 known addresses.
My request to you is, if you would please help me gather the
missing entries for the Family Book. Please contact your relatives, who have not yet contributed to the family book and ask them if they will please write their contribution and send it to me. If they wish, they can make an online submission through the INTERNET!!!(http://www.shealtiel.org)

LETTER OF INTRODUCTION TO NEW-FOUND FAMILIES:
Dear Mr. and Mrs. S(he)altiel,
Have you ever wondered what was the origine of your family name? Did you consider the possibility that you might have remote cousins in your country of origine? Maybe you have already heard about the Shealtiel family network. Do you know that our network has now discovered more than 1600 individual Saltiels living in 26 countries?
Today I would like to share with you some of the interesting facts about our family and the family network which we have created. I would like you to know what the family network can mean to you. First let me tell you that the Shealtiel family network is a non-profit organization, run entirely by volunteering family members who hope to be able rediscover our history and strenghten family ties between us. We believe that all Saltiels, Shaltiels, Sealtiels, Chaltiels,
Scialtiels, Schaltiels, Saltels, and Saltellis are part of our family; we all originate from a Sephardic Jewish family who emigrated from Spain to Greece, Turkey, France, England and whose descendants now live all over the world.
We have had international family reunions in Amsterdam in 1994 and in Thessaloniki, Greece in 1997. At each reunion more than 150 family members came from all over the world. We got to know each other and learned more about the fascinating history of our family. The Shealtiel Gazette is the family publication where you can read about the history of the family, personal reminiscences of family members
and ongoing projects in the family. One of these projects is the Open Door Exchange Program, where family members offer you hospitality during a visit to their country.
Another of our family projects that I would like to invite you to participate in is the Shealtiel Family Book. Each family has a personal page in this book where they introduce themselves to all the family. You can contribute to the family book by entering a description of your family online at http://www.shealtiel.org
The Shealtiel family tree now goes back to France, England and Greece in the 18th century, with more than 3000 names. If you wish, you can now receive the information who was your forebears, who are your distant cousins, and where do they live. Another new project is the creation of the Shealtiel home page. You will find this informative
and fascinating website at the URL http://www.shealtiel.org with lots of information about the family network.
All information about your family is available for free, but if you want to join the family network and receive the Shealtiel Gazette twice a year, we charge a fee to cover our expences. You are most welcome to contact the voluntary contact person for your local area.
Did you know that?
...The Saltiels had their own family synagogue in Salonica (Thessaloniki) which was burned in the great fire?
...This synagogue was nicknamed Figo Loco because of the wild fig tree in its courtyard, which grew in a hot spring and carried figs in the winter!?
...The oldest member of the Saltiel family (Han Bochor Yoseph Saltiel) is said to have reached the age of 140 years?
You can read more about the life of our family in Salonika early this century! A member of our family has told about his youth memories in the interview "Memories of Salonika". You will find this interview and a lot of information about our family at http://www.shealtiel.org/moresal.html
We really would like to know if the Shealtiel family network is of interest to you. We are happy that we have been able to contact you and hope that we will be able to welcome you as a member of the family. With my very best wishes,
Vibeke Sealtiel Olsen
