ii. Introduction
=================
Hello everyone! When I first heard the title of this game, I wasn't too
interested, and I interpreted it to be something other than what I expected
it to be. The game is classified as Strategy/Simulation for the simple reasons
that the game makes you think which gives it strategy and simulation as it
simulates the farming life but on a video game. This game is great for anyone
who has wanted to know what working on a farm would be like but doesn't really
want to get out there and actually DO work. Anyway, I noticed that there are
quite a few FAQs for this game already but I have made mine more
detailed as well as informative, so if you didn't understand one of the
others, I hope you can understand mine. Enough talk, on with the FAQ...
===============
1.) Game Info.
===============
Title: Harvest Moon
Platform: Nintendo 64
Developer: Natsume
Publisher: Nintendo
ESRB Rating: Everyone
Genre: Strategy/Simulation
Other Platforms: Super NES; Gameboy
===========
2.) Story
===========
Well, there is no BIG story to this game, it is rather simple actually,
so here is the story in my words.
Your Grandfather runs this farm, but one day he passes away. When you
start a new game you will see your Grandfather's funeral. Now it is your
job to run his farm in honor of his memory.
The game is basically a 2 year period of all 4 seasons. You will be
harvesting crops, raising animals, and just about everything a farmer
does. Let's see if you can manage to run your Grandfather's farm as
well as he did...

4.) Characters
===============
-Characters other than Wives-
Jack (You)(Default Name) - This is the character you will be controlling.
Jack needs to take of his Grandfather's farm who recently passes away.
Jack will talk to many people in the game, including a lot of women who
he can marry and eventually have a child with. But anyway, Jack (You)
would be considered the "Main Character" in the game.
The Mayor - The Mayor is the one who will be helping you out the most.
He gives you a tour of the town, tells you about different events and
other social activities.
Lilia - Lilia is the owner of the Flower Shop. Go visit her if you
need some seeds or flowers. She also will have various types of vegetables
during the different seasons.
The Midwife - This old lady is the one who will be there to help you
when you eventually have children in the game.
Horse - This is Jack's (your) horse. Your horse can help you out a lot
when he grows older.
Dog - This is Jack's (your) dog. Not much of a description other than
him being your dog.
-WIFE Characters-
These are the characters (5 women) who you can choose to be your wife:
NOTE - Here are the 5 colors of love:
White Heart - Indifferent
Blue Heart - Friendly
Green Heart - Flirtatious
Yellow Heart - Enamored
Pink Heart - Truly in Love
Now here are the 5 characters:
Maria - Maria is the daughter of the mayor and kind of a "nerd" from the
looks of things. She wins a lot of prizes at different festivals. If you want
to find her, try looking in the library or at the Mayor's house. She likes it
most of the time when you talk to her. But if you do want to marry her, you will
have some competition from the Postman.
Elli - Elli works at the bakery and LOVES it when you eat her
goods from her store. She isn't one of the best women to "woo" but if
you do, you'll find her in her bakery.
Ann - Ann works on the ranch. She LOVES little cute animals, Thanks to
NeoHippie2000 for correcting me that you CANNOT bring Ann animals. Oh and
also be sure to look out for her brother :p
Popuri - Popuri works at Lilia's Flower Shop, so obviously she likes flowers.
Bring her some whenever you can if you are trying to woo her. Plant some
flowers at your house if you want to win her heart as well. Also, be sure
to help out her father, the Botanist, whenever you can.
Karen - Karen works at the Inn, and her parents own the Vineyard. She is
very nice once you get to know her. If you want to try and win her heart try
bringing her some wild berries and help out the vineyard workers whenever
possible.
There are many more characters in the game, but I have just listed the
main important ones here...More to come soon...
==================
5.) Items (Tools)
==================
Just to let you know, your tools have 3 different strengths. You will
be able to upgrade a tool twice. The tool itself is one strength, the first
time you upgrade the tool it will be about 3 times stronger than before and
the last strength (last upgrade) you will be able to finish a job with one
strike of the tool.
Axe - Use the Axe to chop up wood. You can then use this wood to build
onto your house or use it for fences.
Bag - Use this to carry the medals you win at races.
Bag (Seeds) - This is the bag you will be using to carry all of your
seeds in.
Bell - Use this to call your cows or sheep.
Blue Feather - This is the item you will be using when you are ready
to propose to one of the 5 women (see characters).
Bottle - These are used to hold liquids as in Zelda 64, only you can
carry more than milk :p
Brush - Use this tool to keep the fur of your sheep, horse and cows
nice and groomed.
Clippers - Used to sheer your sheep for wool which can be sold for a lot
of money :)
Flowers - Use these to give to the 5 women if you plan on "wooing" them
to marry you.
Fishing Pole - Used to catch fish. :Þ
Fish - You can either eat this or sell if for money.
Hammer - The Hammer is used to break up all the rocks that are cluttering
up your farm, very useful.
Hoe - You will need this in order to sort out the soil before planting
seeds; You can also use it to look for minerals.
Lantern - This item will be used at the Firefly Festival.
Ocarina - Used in the Spirit Festival, this can be bought at the ceramics
shop next to Rick's Tool shop. No it is in no way related to Zelda :Þ
Seeds - Use these to grow flowers to give to one of the 5 ladies :)
Sickle - The Sickle is an alternative to clearing out the weeds on your farm.
You can use your hands but the Sickle is a handy tool.
Water Can - Used to water your crops and seeds, etc.

6.) Animals
============
Here are all of the animals in the game, including the dog and horse:
COWS
----
The cows may be the most expensive animal in the entire game, but they
will pay for themselves in no time. Each cow costs 6,000 Gold. But that
will be returned in no time as the milk you get from the cows can be sold,
here are the rates:
Small - You get paid 100 GOLD
Medium - You get paid 150 GOLD
Large - You get paid 300 GOLD
Special - You get paid 500 GOLD
It is all worth the while to raise some cows as they can make you a
lot of money if you raise them right. The cows are available for sale
at the Green Ranch and an easy way to raise more is to get the COW POTION.
SHEEP
-----
Sheep are probably your best bet in making money. Get one from Green
Ranch for 4,000 GOLD. The Sheep produce wool weekly (which is a downside
as the cows produce daily) which you can shear and sell for money! Here
are the rates: Regular = 900 GOLD, Quality = 1,800 GOLD!
CHICKENS
--------
Well the Chickens aren't too great, but they don't eat your grass,
instead they eat chicken feed. They do make you some money however,
by producing eggs daily which is great if you need the money. You get
paid 50 GOLD for the eggs which isn't much, I don't really recommend
raising these. The Chickens are the least expensive animal in the game
as they cost 1,500 GOLD each at Green Ranch.
DOG
---
Your good old dog! You get this dog when you start the game, and during
the winter season you can enter it into a race!
HORSE
-----
In order to acquire the horse you must first go to Green Ranch. The first
time you go there you will receive the horse. Once the horse grows a little
older it can be used for a lot of things, one being it can carry crates and
other stuff for you, plus you can enter your horse in races later in the game!
======================
7.) Pre-Game Strategy
======================
OK, here are some tips as well as some strategy before you start
the actual game...
CLEAR THE LAND!
---------------
Obviously if you don't clear your land first, your crop won't come in
and everything will be a failure :Þ
What I mean by "Clear the Land" is to get rid of certain items on your
farm, such as Rocks, weeds or stumps. When you first start the game there
are a BUNCH of rocks on your farm. To get rid of them break them up with
your hammer or throw them into the water.
The weeds can get a bit annoying at times. As weeds do in real life,
they will grow back even after you have picked them UNLESS you plant
your crop there ASAP. So you should only clear the weeds in areas you
plan on planting at.
The best things to get rid of are the Stumps. Use your Axe to chop these
things down and you not only remove them from the land but you also can
use their wood for your house or fences.
PLANTING CROPS
--------------
Well if you plan on growing successful crops you are going to have to have
patience and a lot of hard work! First things first you will have to
till the land.
To till the hand first pick a cleared space free from rocks weeds and
stumps to plant on, then take out your handy hoe (no jokes :Þ) and start
tillin'! To do this use your hoe on the land once and form a 3x3 grid so
you should have 9 small sections of soil tilled (this method is most effective).
Now with your tilled land it's time to plant the seeds. This is a rather
easy task to complete. Stand in the middle square of your 3x3 grid and
throw out the seeds to cover the grid and plant 9 new ready to grow crops!
The last step in growing a successful crop is to give your plants water!
You will need to water each one of the plants each day. Use the water can
to water your plants but if it is raining outside, don't bother watering them,
as the rain does your job for you!
HARVEST YOUR CROPS
------------------
Once your crops have been planting it's harvesting time! Most of the time
the crop will change visibly allowing you to know that it needs harvesting.
Keep in mind that some crops can grow much faster than others so don't worry
that one is growing and the other isn't.
A handy tip when planting your crop, try and place your 3x3 grids near
the harvesting bin so that you will be closer to it when it's time for
harvesting. You don't want to waste time carrying the crops over long
distances.
YOUR TOWN - FLOWER BUD VILLAGE
------------------------------
Here is a complete map of your town lettered (see under the map to
know what is what) Oh and please don't think I stole this from another
FAQ because I didn't. It is in Nintendo Power Magazine, but the descriptions
of each area are my own:
