This is the sad and painful truth:

Pets Need Love, Not Abuse
By Tina Gentili

Each day more then 72,000 puppies and kittens will be born in the United States alone. Of those, only five in 50 will find permanent, loving homes. Others will be given away or put out on the street. The majority of these will be destroyed. This is a sad but true fact. Animal abuse is just one the problems facing the United States.

Animal abuse has been recorded since the earliest times. Since the definition of abuse has not been clearly stated, it is hard for one to know what it exactly boils down to. One of the types of animal abuse is companion animal abuse. This is when someone does something to one of their pets, maliciously, intentionally, and irresponsibly. But it could also be when someone hurts their pets unintentionally, ignorantly and painfully. The abuse is based on harmful effects caused by not having all things that are necessary for the animal. Or not feeding them or brushing them.

One of the main kinds of abuse is neglect. The definition for this would be doing something to the animals that would hurt their health, or their well-being. Neglect is a big problem in the United States. People think that they can leave their animals in a crate, or tied up all day. For instance, dogs are pack animals, they need to be around other animals or humans. It is wrong and cruel if you don't spend time with your animals. Also, there are more adult animals abused than young ones. The reason for this is because people will see a puppy in a pet store, and go ahead and buy it even though they aren't prepared for them. Most of the time they don't even think about the future of the pet. They think the puppy or kitten is cute and that's the only reason why they are getting it. But when it gets older, they don't think it is so cute any more. Then what sometimes happens is that it is tied up out side the whole day, and only given the necessities to live. They get no love or companionship.

Are animals that are used for scientific research considered abused? The Animal protection Institute of America estimates that in the United States alone three laboratory animals die every second. Over 200 million animals are employed each year in worldwide scientific research, and 100 million of those are found in the U. S. The animals that are used for experimentation are rats, mice, guinea pigs, birds, sheep, dogs, cats, monkeys, baboons, cows, pigs, and even horses. Mice and rats are the most commonly used. Around 20 million rats and 50 million mice are annually used in the U. S.

Another kind of abuse is physical abuse. The definition of that would be hurting the animal in a physical manner. Many people think that when their pets do something bad, they should throw it across the room, or hit it. A couple of years ago, there was a story about a dog that had been skinned, and thrown against a swing set. This is definitely considered animal abuse. People who think they can treat their pet as a stuffed animal or as a punching bag are wrong.

At the Denver Humane Society, about 20 percent of all the animals that come to them are abused. Animals with long hair are abused more frequently. Owners think that these animals are able to take the kicking and abuse, because they look tougher. This is not true. All animals have feelings and are not able to take the abuse.
