Late one night at Angel Island on of the Legacy butler's receives a package delivered for William Sloan. Once he dismisses the delivery guy, he takes the crate upstairs to the library, upon entering he trips causing him to drop the crate and damage it with a crack. From that crack glowing entities are then released from the wooden box that begin to smash the lights in the library and then disappear as they do in enters Derek. He helps Fredrick up, looks at the cut on his head, and sends him to Rachel as he looks into the darkened room suspiciously.
Later that evening Derek speaks with Sloan via the Sat-link informing him of the box. He also tells him the return address and name given at check-in was fake, that the fee was paid in cash and the clerk who received the box at the delivery office vanished after clocking out. Both men find it suspicious but think it a coincidence, Derek then tells Sloan he's curious as to the box's contents, Sloan says he is too. After receiving permission to view the content within the box and a fair warning to be careful from Sloan, Alex and Nick run a scan on the box, after seeing nothing comes up Nick persists on opening it. Derek allows them too, meanwhile outside the control room Fredrick replaces the bulbs that were smashed but is disappointed when the lights keep breaking. Back with the box Nick gives up opening it with a key, and cuts the top off with a torch. Once he removes it the others view what it holds as "garage sell rejects". Derek thinks the box is a joke and advises them to affix dates and patterns to track it back to its sender. Fredrick then calls Derek out to the hallway to tell him about the problem with the lights. Derek thinks nothing of it, but tells him to call an electrician in the morning, Nick tells him to leave the switches off for the night. Once he leaves Nick speaks to Derek about the possibility of there being a connection with the box, Derek says nothing.
Alex later studies a silver pitcher in the parlor room, when suddenly she is attacked by the glowing entities. She's thrown back behind the couch, drapes are dripped on her and hit on the head with the pitcher just before Rachel walks in and finds her struggling with the drapes. Moments later all are back in the parlor, Derek places everything in order as Rachel examines Alex and Alex explains what happened. Derek then tries his hand at playing "devil's advocate" and recreates the events at which then Nick, Alex, and Rachel laugh at him. Alex then describes the noise she heard, Derek asks for the silver pitcher to which she says is gone. As they look for it, Nick instead finds the recorder she was working with, plays it back and Alex identifies the recording as the noise she heard when attacked. Derek calls Sloan tells him they want to send the box back to him cause they think "the damn thing is haunted". Sloan replies by saying "surprise, surprise told you to be careful". Sloan also tells him other groups are working on the case, Derek says he'll keep him in the loop on his end. Rachel, Alex and Nick meanwhile discuss the items, Derek comes in and dismisses them to get some rest. He stays back in his office examining Alex's recording.
Rachel plays the bagpipes that were contained in the crate in the privacy of her bedroom unaware she is attracting the lightning bugs. She stops playing when she feels something drawing near, goes out to the hallway but returns to her room when she finds nothing. Derek in his office stops listening to the noise, shuts off the monitors and heads out to his room when he hears noises coming from downstairs. He goes down to check it out but instead gets attacked by the entities. Nick also hears the noise and rushes downstairs to see Derek trying to get up he helps him stand and then goes into the parlor to find he mess left behind by their noisy guests. Derek finds the pitcher not far from where he was attacked and shows it to Nick who is surprised to see it especially when Derek informs him it was thrown at him. He tells Nick to get Rachel and Alex and to begin running tests on the artifacts. Derek now believes they would be fools to set these tricks off as prankish behavior and
nothing else.
Later once again Derek speaks to Sloan, who says everything from his perspective sounds fairly comical, Derek gives him a glare and Sloan laughs telling him he won't apologize again. Derek expresses concern Sloan does too but doesn't show it as much, Nick enters Derek's office and tells him they are making progress with the junk items. Derek then switches Sloan into the control room from his office, he greets Alex, Rachel, and Nick like a good Ruling Precept as Derek asks what they have so far. Alex identifies the doll as belonging to Clarissa Mayhew who in 1865 along with her Aunt Jeanette the Precept of the Paris house was bludgeoned to death in their sleep. Rachel tells them that the stains on the blood are human blood, Nick then expresses the fact that the residue on the inside of the pitcher is poisonous. Sloan tells them it was used to poison another Legacy member, and concludes that what they have are souvenirs of Legacy member murders. Sloan hangs up after telling them that finding out what they have is more important than who sent them to them. Alex and Rachel continue to match up items to murders, Nick goes down into the kitchen to make some coffee after Derek hands him a stronger flashlight and tells him to be careful. Once there, the bugs begin to attack Nick cutting him on the chest and scraping his face, Nick lights back with a pan smashing some of them in the process but catches another in his hand. He scrambles out of the kitchen and returns to the control room, where Rachel tries to dig it out of him with some tweezers. Derek flashes a light on his hand which cause sparks to fly and something inside him to shriek, Nick yells out in pain, Rachel is able to get it out but can't tell what it is because it's so small. Derek puts it under the microscope, it looks like a little man of armor, they conclude by what happened to it that Sunlight kills them but that they are afraid of all light.
Derek calls Sloan back to tell him, Sloan says that they may be dealing with fairies, Alex laughs telling him tinkerbell never attacked Peter Pan. Sloan rebukes telling her fairies are nothing more than paranormal gnats. He tells them again to be careful and hangs up as Rachel and Nick walk in, they hear screams coming from outside. Rachel says it sounds like Fredrick, they all thought he had gone home for the night, Derek and Nick go to find him while Rachel and Alex stay behind to find out more about their unwanted guests. Derek and Nick search for Fredrick downstairs heading towards the basement, they find him lying dead. They get closer and get attacked by the bugs, Derek tells Nick to turn on his light, they fight them off until they leave them alone long enough to drag Fredrick out of there. Meanwhile Alex and Rachel identify the tartan on the bagpipes and crate as that belonging to the Clan Cavandish, Derek and Nick return as they talk about their banishment into eternal darkness. Nick tells them Fredrick is dead, but Derek asks them what they have found out to which Rachel rebuffs angrily that he won't give them a minute to process the thought. Derek replies they don't have a minute or else they could wind up dead just the same. Alex explains what they have found, the Clan a group of marauding and vicious Highway men turned to the occult to escape the law, were hunted down by other clans with the help of the Legacy. Rachel tells them that their leader was reputed to have replied "If we can drink enough of our enemies blood to hold us through the daylight hours". Nick says they have the choice to hunt them down or to wait and get boxed in by the Clan. Derek tells them it would do no good to hunt them down because they'll know they are armed just like they knew when they went after Fredrick. He thinks of a plan after showing them that the noise Alex caught on tape was the Clan playing the bagpipe. He shows him his plan to entrap the clan in the old furnace room, Rachel agrees to lure them by playing the bagpipes.
Down in the furnace room, Rachel plays the instrument as they hear her play the Clan begins to follow the music down to her, surrounding her. Nick wants to close the door, but Derek tells him to wait they have to get all of them. Once all are there, Nick and Derek close the doors, Rachel stops playing the pipes, and the others turn on their Ultra-violet flashlights and begin attacking the clan. They get most of them, but others hide when they see no more, they stop and wait, soon they are attacked again the members fight back with the lights, but the Clan attacks the flashlights leaving the members unprotected against them. The Cavendish Clan attacks them, Derek shouts to Nick to break the window in the room after seeing the morning sunlight beginning to show through. The sunlight finishes off the remainder of the entities, saving the members from a painful doom. Later Derek speaks to Sloan about the catastrophe that did occur in his house and the one that almost did. Sloan feels terribly guilty about not paying more attention like Derek had to the events that led up to it, telling him that he never lost focus. That he knew, but Derek tells him that it is his (Derek's) responsibility, shared or otherwise the death of a man happened in his house, his home, and that he must find who is responsible. Sloan agrees that they must, he tells Derek that a Legacy Courier will pick up the artifacts and crate and that the London house will take over the investigation. Derek agrees before hanging up, Sloan in his office in London closes out by saying that living behind a desk takes the edge off of the goal, the mission. And that he was wrong to assume only his life was on the line.
