It was a stormy night when William Sloan was having a conversation with Derek over the telephone. Sloan was coming over with artifacts from a grave in France. Baron de Rais was a soldier who was accused of doing witchcraft and punished by being burned to death.
Flying in a storm, Sloan, talking with Derek over the telephone discusses the persecution of Baron de Rais. But because of the storm Sloan and his crew will have to make a landing at an airstrip not to far away so they will not be able to make it over to the house. Sloan, while talking to Derek is looking at the artifacts and describing them to Derek when suddenly the plain makes a nosedive going straight down.
The next day, back at the house Derek was explaining to the others what had happened. Sloan's plain crashed in the mountain area with peeks as high as 11,000 feet. The radar cannot get over the mountains to do a full area search and where Sloan crashed is not a crash zone. So they are having a hard time locating the airplane. But they were able to narrow it down to five areas.
The airplane did not have a black box but it had a ELT which can send out a distress signal so they may be able to locate it. But is it very hard because if they radar can't get in then the ELT may not get out. Plus they can't do an air search over the mountains because the weather is to risky, but when the snow comes... it will bury the crash site and then they might not be able to find Sloan till spring.
The crash, Sloan is laying on a table strapped down. He is not in the airplane anymore. A man with a candle in his hands walks up to Sloan and does not say a word as Sloan lies there begging for help. Sloan week and helpless passes out
Back at the house, they are investigating approximately 1200 square miles of mountain range that they have to search. It could take days to find Sloan and his crew plus they have to battle the elements... very cold and harsh weather.
Derek walks in saying that Sloan is alive... he knows it because for the first time Derek has a psychic connection with Sloan and he does not like it.
At the crash, or where ever he is. Sloan lies there helpless as the man with the candle comes back and wakes Sloan up. Sloan begs to know who he is. He asks for the mysterious man to speak but he does not speak. Sloan begs the man to show himself, let him know what he looks like but he does not do so. He asks the man what does he want, but the man does not answer. The man starts to walk away as Sloan begs, Sloan says he has a wife and children then suddenly the mysterious man replies, "So did I."
Sloan tries to reason with the man, tells the man to get word to his family, he begs him but then the man replies that he begged too, he begged him. Sloan doesn't know what is going on asks to know who the man is. The man answers him, "I am Baron de Rais."
He explains to Sloan about himself, "I was an innocent god fearing man, until you did this to me." He holds his face closer to the candle so Sloan can see him. He was hideous: he left eye was closed shut, looked almost melted, his skin was discolored? Frankenstein looked better!
Back at the house, the helicopter is taking off. As they are taking off Derek fades into his psychic connection with Sloan...
Back at the crash, Sloan is confused and does not understand what Baron de Rais is talking about... accusing Sloan of killing him. Baron does not agree with Sloan... Sloan keeps telling him that he did not kill him and he is telling the truth but that makes Baron even angrier. Baron turns his head into the darkness to get something... then flashes in front of Sloan's face. It was his ring, his legacy ring. Baron keeps telling Sloan to look at it and asks if it belongs to him. Sloan says yes it belongs to him.
Baron takes the ring away from Sloan's face. It was the first thing he saw when he woke from the dead, Baron explains, like waking up from a nightmare that never ended. The ring with the letter L was the last thing Baron saw before he was burned alive, Sloan's ring.
Back with the team, the helicopter reaches the US Watching Department (I think) where they meet the Captain, Captain Smith. A rescue team that will help Derek and the others find Sloan. As Captain Smith explains the weather conditions Derek drifts into his connection with Sloan again?
Up, and all around are sculptures holding torches as Sloan is trying to explain to Baron that he is not the one that tortured him. But Baron does not listen and doesn't care what Sloan says.
Sloan looking around the room notices a door and he sees himself tied down with ropes.
Baron talked to Sloan about his torture. He stood up in the corner, about 4 feet to the left of the table where Sloan was describing how a hooded man stood there and watched saying the word "Confess".
Sloan makes a stand saying that is Baron is innocent how could he put another man through what he went through. Baron asked Sloan if he expected pity, he had no pity but he has revenge, "You will not deny me my revenge," said Baron.
Back at the rescue station, Derek is sitting next to a window as he has a flash of Sloan being tortured. He jumps up from his chair shocked and terrified for Sloan. Alex asked if Derek was okay. He explains to them what he saw. Everyone freaked out.
Derek pulled Alex near the window and told her to go and tap into the legacy files and see when the weather conditions will clear, that they will leave when they think it is sufficient.
Derek put on his jacket and went outside to calm down. Rachel followed, and they started to talk. Derek started to think... his one main thought is "some things are better off left alone". Everyone... had been tampering with stuff that should have been left alone. Certain things cross the line, what gives us the right to say yes or no about it. As Derek says best, "... sometimes we should just let sleeping demons lie?"
Sloan, struggling to get out of the rope that binds him to the table. Sloan sees Baron looking through some stuff. Baron picks up one of the instruments? one of the instruments of torture that was used on him, its called "The Boot" (it looks like it was made out of two blocks of wood and it raps around your leg. With some type of wedge, that you would hammer in the inside part of the boot where your leg is, crushing it.)
Then Sloan makes another stand telling Baron that he would enjoy this? torturing him. Just like he tortured all those children that he was accused for killing and using there blood as part of his rituals to conjure up demons to win his battles for him. The Boot is now rapped around Sloan's leg. Baron shows Sloan his legs, torn apart by the boot. They are dead flesh. Sloan call's Baron evil, but Baron says that Sloan has no idea what evil is and not to talk about evil in front of his face.
Back at the rescue team, Derek is looking out the window worried about Sloan when he gets good news about the storm. Alex shows Derek the legacy radar and the storm has let up, they are going after Sloan now.
Derek goes and looks out the window again to see flashes of Sloan being tortured again.
A hammer swings in the air and strikes a wooden wedge as Sloan lets out a terrible scream. Baron taps the wedge and is ready to swing again when Sloan makes it clear to him that he cannot hurt him. Sloan will not confess to nothing for him.
Baron says he will and scares Sloan by pretending to hit the wedge but doesn't. Fear, fear is what Baron wants and fear is what he will get.
Back at the chopper, Derek Nick Rachel and Alex are looking for the wreckage in hopes that they will find Sloan. Derek is getting cramps in his legs because of the cold and high altitude.
Baron is talking to Sloan, telling him what he did to him. His arms, his legs they can no longer be used anymore. He told Sloan about how they wanted him to confess, and he did confess but it wasn't enough, it was never enough. They also wanted him to condemn his family, saying that they also practiced witchcraft. He would not do that to his family.
Then Baron starts to talk about Sloan's friends, "Righteous men" he calls them. He says to Sloan that those "Righteous men" knew that he was innocent but did not say anything. Then Sloan makes a very good point, about how Baron fought in the war killing his enemy and killing there families... that maybe whoever did this... did the torture thought the same. That he, Baron, was there enemy.
Baron did not take highly of what Sloan said and instead questioned him on why he desecrated his grave... his sleep. Sloan explained that he wanted to give Baron a chance to prove his innocence. But Baron was not satisfied; he asked Sloan if that would take away all the pain. If the ring, Sloan's legacy ring, could take away all the pain it had inflicted. Sloan could not answer, but Baron enforced the question. Sloan shook his head no. Baron was furious and hit Sloan's leg again with the mallet as he let out a horrible scream.
Derek in the helicopter with Nick Alex and Rachel were still looking for Sloan. Nick got a call from Captain Smith saying that they should head back in. But the Captain said it was getting to dark and they should. So they had to go back.
Yet, Sloan was being tortured by Baron when they here the helicopter. Sloan told Baron that it is his army coming to rescue him. Baron goes and grabs a weapon.
But it was to late, Derek and they others were turning back.
Back with Sloan, he end up getting a break but before Baron walked out the door. He said one thing, "Just remember you created me."
Back at the rescue station Derek was telling the history of Baron de Rais to the others and how he was accused of all those crimes. Then suddenly Derek gets a connection with Sloan again, he sees Sloan trying to get out and hitting Baron de Rais. But the ringing of a telephone breaks his concentration. Captain Smith goes to answer it and they got good news. The radar picked up the ELT and they have an exact location of Sloan's plane. Derek gets up and says, "Let's go."
Meanwhile Sloan is trying to get out of his restraints and is able to wiggle his hand lose from the rope, he unties himself and starts to take the boot off of his leg which is badly damaged.
Derek, in the helicopter with the other is flying over the mountains as the spot the Sloan's plane. The plane was in an upright position stuck between a gorge.
Baron comes back into the room where Sloan is and finds him gone. He approaches the table to look, Sloan, hiding in the corner, slips out the door. Sloan locks the door with a piece of wood to keep Baron out. He starts to head up this flight of stairs to open the door in hopes he will get out of this place and finds his crew hanging from ropes dead. Baron banging on the door behind Sloan, saying "you can't escape me!"
Derek and the others landed and went to the crash. They had to go down a pretty steep slope in order to reach it. Nick went to get the equipment when Derek mentioned that there was something down there with Sloan. He stepped a little to far out and fell down the slope.
Baron was able to break through the door and then Sloan picked up a brick and hit his back as Sloan, with his leg badly damaged, limping back through the door to try to find a way out. He makes it through as Baron gets back up. Baron comes through the door and Sloan goes to hide in a corner. Baron, crawling on the floor because he cannot walk picks up a weapon (sort of like a spear) and sits up on the table. Baron sees Sloan and he was going to through the weapon at him when Derek walked in through a side door. Baron takes aim on Derek and throws it at Derek killing him. Sloan yelling for Derek comes out of his corner and then Baron grabs him by the shirt and says now it is his turn to die.
Back on the slope Nick throws a rope down and starts to go down it. As Alex and Rachel follow behind.
Sloan was put back on the table as Nick walks through the door with a torch? Baron with an Ax swings at Nick and they fight. Sloan tells Nick to burn him and does. Baron catches on fire and melts into ashes.
Then there are voices in the background. Nick is asking if Derek is okay, and Derek says he is all right. Sloan fades away from the room that he was in and a light flashes upon his face. Derek asks if Sloan is okay but all he can say:
"Your alive," said Sloan.
His legs is wedges in between pieces of metal.
"Your legs? can you feel them?" asked Derek.
"He killed you, I saw it. I saw you fall," said Sloan staring at Derek.
"Can you feel your legs William," said Derek.
Nick interrupted, "Mr. Sloan, what about your crew?"
"There dead, I saw them," he replied.
Nick went to go and check if his crew was okay. They were dead.
"He was here Derek," said Sloan.
"Who?" asked Derek.
"Baron de Rais, he tortured me, killed you, Nick killed him," said Sloan.
Sloan thought he was being delirious and it was all in his head. Rachel came through the door and asked if Derek was okay, Derek was fine but Sloan needed attention. Alex came after, both Alex and Derek started collecting artifacts from the plain so they can work with them when they get home. Derek found a book that was open and started reading from it:
"I could feel more of my bones break and each time?" Sloan cut off Derek.
" I could hear the hooded man with the ring with the letter L say confess, confess," said Sloan.
Back at the house at last, Derek is with Sloan's wife outside of his door.
"Thank you Derek," said Sloan's wife giving Derek a big hug.
"I did it for you, or else I would have left that son of a bitch out there and been rid of him for good," Derek said with a smile.
"When are the two of your going to admit that you couldn't survive without each other," said Sloan's wife.
Derek laughed, "Never, its more fun this way."
Rachel came out of Sloan's room.
"Patient doin' great," said Rachel.
"Thank you," said Derek to Rachel as he walked in with Sloan's wife.
Sloan's wife went and hugged him.
"I suddenly feel like a third will," said Derek.
"You are get out of here," said Sloan, "Stop it," said his wife.
"By the way it was a good thing you didn't die. Do you remember that your last act was to prove me wrong. Well, I was right. It was all there in his journals. De Rais was innocent for every crime he was charged with. Not one of the fourteen people that charged him actually knew anything about him. They were tortured into lying, just as I thought," said Derek.
"Your being right kept him alive, I hope your right a lot," said Sloan's wife.
"Innocent," said Sloan as Derek shook his head yes, "Can you arrange that his remains be buried in consecrated ground?"
"Certainly," said Derek.
"What about the legacy, was there a connection?" said Sloan.
"Well we don't know yet, it is going to take some time to research," said Derek.
"But I told you that his inquisitor was wearing a legacy ring," said Sloan.
"If in fact he actually spoke to you at all," said Derek.
"I'm not buying the hallucination theory until you can explain the book? how I knew it was in the cockpit and where my ring is?" said Sloan waving his hand.
Derek smiled and shut the door.
"How much injustice has been done in the name of good. How many innocent people have died because of ideologies who believed that there way was the only true way. Maybe that's one of the evils that we should really be concerned with"
William Sloan
