| THE DENTON WELCH ADMIRATION SITE |
This site is for readers of the English writer, Denton Welch. We are dedicated to keeping his spirit alive for the inspiration of
ourselves and others.
Following a short biography is a complete bibliography of his works. This was compiled by the Denton Welch Library at the
Humanities Research Center at the University of Texas in Austin, Texas, USA. His novels, "In Youth is Pleasure, "Maiden
Voyage", and "A Voice Through A Cloud" are easily order able at most bookstores. There is also an excellent biography
called, "Denton Welch, The Making of a Writer'

Before getting to the biography and bibliography here is part of an interview with William Burroughs, who considered Denton
Welch his greatest literary influence:
TT : Let's talk about Denton Welch.
Mr. B. : I am writing an introduction for a German translation of "In Youth is pleasure". I've been running
through it and underlining certain passages. I'll just read some at random. He's
Such a marvelous writer, the way he can make anything into something. Writers who complain that they
don't have anything to write about should read Denton Welch and see what he can do with practically
nothing. Like this, he borrows a boy's bicycle.
"Oh, yes", said the Stowe boy in his most tired voice, "you can borrow it for as long as you like.
I loathe riding it. The saddle seems specially designed to deprive one of one's manhood; but
perhaps you won't mind that."
Orvil was too happy to be pricked into any retort by the intended insult..,
Orvil wished passionately that he had no body so that these remarks could never be applied to
him. He felt ashamed to be in position to be deprived of his manhood.
His tears made damp, chocolatery lumps out of the feathery dust."
The whole surface of the river bristled with a fir of hissing raindrop, sharp as bullets."
What a mind !
Denton Welch is actually Kim Carsons in the new book. I sort of kidnapped him to be my hero. And so much
of it is w
TT : Denton Welch used different characters, didn't he ?
Mr. B. : He's only got one character and it's always him. Well, there are other characters, what it all pivots
around is an eternally 15-year-old boy. His writing was all done after his accident. He had this accident when
he was riding his bicycle and some woman ran into him from behind. That happened when he was 20 and he
was an invalid the rest of his life and died at the age of 31 from complications.
BR : I like his journals.
Mr. B. : I love his journals. I like everything he wrote. I've read every word I could get my hands on. He
started out to be a painter. He was in art school when he had the accident. He had a terrific style with the
choice of one word or another or a sentence that no one but Denton Welch could have written. I compare
him to Jane Bowles because she had the same faculty for writing a sentence that no one else could
conceivably have written. And there, again, her complete work is 500 pages or se. People ask me about
influences. I should say that he is the strongest influence on my work - stylistically certainly.
TT: When did you first read him ?
Mr. B : Back in 1947 or 48 when he was still alive. Kerouac read him. I thought he was great. I didn't realize
the extent to which he had influenced me or the extent to which the character Audrey Carsons was derived
from Dental Welch until I reread him in 1976 in Boulder. Cabell, who I was sharing an apartment with, had
found someone who was a Denton Welch fan and had all the books. So I reread them and read some I had
not before, like the Diaries. I was even more impressed. Some writers reread well and others don't. He
does. And another writer I was influenced by was Joseph Conrad.
Biography:
Welch, Denton
b. March 27, 1915, Shanghai
d. Dec. 30, 1948, Middle Orchard, near Borough Green, Kent, Eng.
English painter and novelist chiefly remembered for two imaginative novels of adolescence,
Maiden Voyage (1943) and In Youth Is Pleasure (1944).
Welch was educated at Repton School in Derbyshire. After a visit to China he studied
painting at the Goldsmith School of Art. In 1935, while still at school, he was severely
injured in a cycling accident that left him an invalid for the rest of his life; but he
continued painting, exhibiting frequently at the Leicester galleries, and began his career as
a writer.
With the exception of two novels and a volume of short stories, Brave and Cruel (1946),
Welch's other works have been published posthumously: A Voice Through a Cloud (1950),
considered by many his best novel; Journals (1952), an account of his wide travels, taken
despite his bad health; I Left My Grandfather's House (1958), which is only a very rough
draft; and Denton Welch--Selections from His Published Works (1963), which contains a
notable introduction by Jocelyn Brooke.
His wonderfully observant journals paint a vivid, unforgettable picture of Britain in the thirties and forties.
In them, he's frank about his homosexuality, though it appears to have given him little pleasure.
