Introduction to Pokemon:

Pokemon, the game that took America by storm. With over 33 million copies sold, this is one of the most successful video games ever. That was just the start. Pokemon Cards along with Pokemon Yellow, Pinball, TCG, and Gold and Silver also generated billions of dollars in revenue.

Intro:
You start out the game as a young Pokemon Trainer. Your mission, to collect all the Pokemon and become the top trainer in the world. You can pick the name of your character and the name of your rival. Your rival another young trainer who is also trying to become the greatest. You will meet up with him many times throughout your quest.

Pokemon:
Pokemon are creatures someone like animals that have special powers and incredible strength. You can catch them, they will permanently belong to you unless you trade them. Almost any Pokemon that you catch yourself will obey you. However, if you use a traded Pokemon that is higher then what your badge allows, your Pokemon will disobey your commands.

HP:
Your Pokemon is given an HP level, its will HP will decrease. A Pokemon's max HP will never decrease. If your Pokemon is hurt, you can restore its HP by using an item or taking your Pokemon to a PokeCenter. If your Pokemon loses all its HP, it will faint. To revive a fainted Pokemon, you must use the Revive or MaxRevive item. You can also revive fainted Pokemon at the PokeCenter. To increase your pokemon's max HP, you can level it up by fighting other Pokemon. You can also use the HP Up item. Some Pokemon get more HP then others, so it is wise to use Pokemon that have high HP.

Strength Characteristics:
Like HP, a Pokemon has four other categories which measure its strength.

Attack: The higher your Pokemon's attack is, the more HP its physical attacks will take from the opponent.

Defense: The more Defense your Pokemon has, the less damage it will take from the enemy's physical attacks.

Speed: If your Speed is higher then that of the enemy's, you will attack first every turn. If it is lower, the enemy will attack first.

Special: Special is probably the most important category. The higher a Pokemon's Special is, the more frequently Status-changing moves will work. Also, the higher a Pokemon's

Special is, more damage will be inflicted by Special moves. THe more special a Pokemon has, the less damage it will take from an opposing pokemon.

Special Attacks & Status Change:
Some types of moves will cause status changes.
The types of status changes are:

Poison: Your Pokemon will be hurt 1 HP every few steps. During battle, you will lose some HP every turn.

Burn: Same as Poison.

Frozen: Your Pokemon will not be able to attack in battle.

Paralyze: Your Pokemon's speed will drop to 0. Sometimes you will not be able to attack.

Sleep: Your pokemon will not be able to attack until it wakes up.

Confuse: Your Pokemon may attack itself, but it also may attack normally.

Special Attacks & Ability Changes:
Some types of moves will cause ability Changes. Some move will cuase your Pokemon's strength to drop. This drop is only temporary, so don't think that your Poksmons strentgth will always be reduced. There is also moves that your Pokemon can use that will increase your strength temporarily. See the move guide for more details.

Collecting Pokemon:
Finding Pokemon:
You can find wild Pokemon in the tall grass on the fields. As you walk through the grass, you will wildly encounter random Pokemon. Another way to fight Pokemon is to fish. To fish, select a rod (see item section) and hit the A button next to a body of water. You will catch a random Pokemon according to your place and they type of rod you are using. Also, when in caves, you will automatically encounter Pokemon, without being in grass. You can only catch wild Pokemon.
Catching Pokemon:

If you are battling a wild Pokemon that you don't have, you should catch it. You need a PokeBall to catch a pokemon. There is four types of balls that you can use to catch Pokemon. (except the safari balls)
PokeBall: This is the weakest ball. Higher-level Pokemon will usually break free from this ball, regardless of HP.
Great Ball: This is a average ball. You can buy it around the middle of the game. It can be used effectively to catch most Pokemon between level 10 and 25.
Ultra Ball: This is the strongest ball that you can buy at a Pokemon Mart. They can be used effectively to catch any level Pokemon.
Master Ball: This is the strongest ball, but you only get one. This will catch any Pokemon, regardless of HP or level.
*Safari Balls: These Balls can only be used when you are in the Safari Zone. You can not use any other type of ball in the Safari Zone.

Apricorns: (Gold and Silver Only)
After you save the Slowpoke in Azalea Town, Kurt will make Pokéballs for you from apricorns. There are different types of balls that come from different types of apricorns. Apricorns can be found in trees throughout your journey.

Fast Ball: (White Apricorn): These balls allow you to catch Pokémon that run away from battle with greater efficiency.

Lure Ball: (Blue Apricorn): These balls allow you to catch Pokemon on a rod better with greater efficiency.

Heavy Ball: (Black Apricorn): These balls are good for catching Pokemon that weigh a lot and are very big.

Level Ball: (Red Apricorn): These balls catch lower level Pokemon with good efficiency.

Friend Ball: (Green Apricorn): These balls make the Pokemon you catch like you better then a regular ball.

Love Ball: (Pink Apricorn): The Love Ball is good for catching Pokemon of the opposite gender.

Moon Ball: (Yellow Apricorn): This ball catches Pokemon that our evolve when exposed to the moon stone.

To catch a Pokemon, you should lower its HP to as low as possible. If you have trouble catching the Pokemon still, put it to sleep. Legendary Pokemon (Zapdos, Articuno, etc.) are very hard to catch. The ball will usually miss unless you put the Pokemon to sleep.

Finding all the Pokemon:
You can not get all the Pokemon in the game without trading with someone else. You can only get 1 of the 3 starting Pokemon. Also, you can only get 1 of Eevee's evolutions. You can either pick Omanyte or Kabuto. Also, each version has different Pokemon. There are 11 Pokemon that are unique to the Red or Blue version. See the Pokemon location section for details.

Trading:
If you want another Pokemon that someone else has, you can trade with them. Hook two gameboys together with a game link cable. Now, go to a Pokemon Center. Talk the woman at the right desk at the same time. Now, you can trade Pokemon. When you trade a Pokemon, it will register in your Pokedex, even if you trade it back. Some Pokemon will only evolve by trading. These Pokemon are Kadabra, Graveler, Machoke, and Haunter.

Raising a Pokemon:
If your Pokemon is weak, you should raise its level. Every time you defeat another Pokemon, you will get experience points. When your experience points hit a certain number, your Pokemon will get a level up. Every time you get a level up, your Pokemon gets stronger. Also, Pokemon learn new moves after they get levels up. Most Pokemon evolve after reaching a certain level.

Evolving Pokemon:

Through Training:
Most Pokemon that evolve will do so when they reach a certain level. When the hits the level, it will evolve. When Pokemon evolve, they often are compatible to more TMs. Also, when a Pokemon evolves, it recieves a stat boost in all its categories (Most of the time). You can stop your Pokemon from evolving by hitting the B button durring the after-battle screen.

Through Items:
A few Pokemon will only evolve when you use a evolutionary stone. One of these Pokemon is Growlithe. It will evolve when you use a Fire stone on it. In most cases, a Pokemon will stop learning moves after it evolves.
This is not true in the case of Eevee.

Through Trading:
As you read above, there are four Pokemon that only will evolve when you trade them to another trainer. I don't like this because the other person has them when they evolve. Trade back to get your Pokemon.

Battling:
Now that you know how to catch and raise Pokemon, you should consider battle tactics. Special moves hurt other Pokemon more if your Pokemon has a type disadvantage. Some moves hurt less to Pokemon that are resistant to that move. There is 15 different types. Type advantages often decide who wins a battle.

Type Chart:

1. Normal:
