StingThis scorpion's attitude, forged from a friend's betrayal, is a stark departure of the multi-colored face paint, bright ring attire and blond coiffure of years ago. After a time of intimidating silence, Sting is silent no more; ready to build upon his reputation as the "franchise" of WCW.
This native of Venice Beach, Calif. was a major fan-favorite from the beginning of his ring exploits with several "Wrestler of the Year" honors to his credit. Before slamming opponents in the ring, he dunked basketballs in the collegiate ranks, as well as smacked volleyballs and surfed on the California coast. Sting also enjoys riding his Harley Davidson motorcycle, off-road jeeps, golf and acting. His first work was the 1998 independent release The Real Reason. He also had roles in Hogan's television series "Thunder in Paradise." Sting was featured in a TNT Original Movie, Shutter Speed, which debuted in February 2000.
In 1999, Sting turned against his friends and his fans, siding with the one man who betrayed him from the start. But the fans would not let their hero remain on the side of evil. When the time came, and his one ally stabbed him in the back again, the fans embraced The Stinger, welcoming him back with open arms.
Over a decade ago, Sting was recognized as one of the true future superstars in the sport. Today, with six WCW Heavyweight Title reigns under his belt, he has surpassed anyone's expectations, and has risen from future star to certifiable legend in the world of wrestling.
Tank Abbott
Wrestlers who have been struck with Tank Abbott's famous right-hand never forget the experience even if they do have trouble remembering their name and home address.
While many wrestlers come from backgrounds in grueling professional sports and the martial arts, few men can boast of having Tank's impressive resume in mud hole stomping. Ultimate Fighting Competition a shootfighting organization known for its bloody-style of warfare recruited Tank straight out of prison, in hopes of showing fans that bar brawlers couldn't compete with Judo and Greco-Roman specialists.
Instead of falling to the competition, Tank became the most feared man in the promotion and notorious for his big mouth and even bigger punches. WCW hired the madman in May of 1999, but Tank's rage and sadism immediately forced officials to place him in the Power Plant for further training. After spending months working with Bobby Eaton, Tank hadn't become any less hostile, but he had learned a variety of technical skills that made him even more dangerous.
Since returning to competition near the end of 1999, Tank has forced opponents to fight his style of no-holds-barred competition. Even monsters like Meng have been unable to slow the street-fighting bully, who plans to be battling for main event gold within just a few months.
Terry Funk
Both Eastern and Western philosophers have claimed that age brings man both wisdom and perspective.
We think these philosophers didn't spend much time at the Double-Cross Ranch... Middle-aged and crazy, the son of Texas legend Dory Funk Sr. has only become more dangerous over his 35-year career. During those tumultuous times, Terry grabbed the NWA Title on several occasions, defending the belt against men like Jack Brisco and Harley Race.
The second-generation brawler was considered a champion, but Terry built his fame on his penchant for psychotic hardcore matches in both Japan and America. A veteran of WCW, WWF and ECW, Terry has competed amidst barbed wire, flames and explosive devices.
When WCW Executive Vice President Bill Busch called Terry in Amarillo, Texas, the hardcore legend had finally retired after years of honored service to professional wrestling. Sickened by the nWo's disrespect for his family business, Terry agreed to return as WCW's commissioner and defend the sport that had made him into an international superstar. At the 2000 Souled Out PPV, Funk lost the commissioner role to Kevin Nash, but remained strong in the WCW fold.
Today, Terry is embroiled in a vicious feud that is almost "deja vu," as he battles the "American Nightmare" Dustin Rhodes. After a legendary feud that has spanned for decades with Dustin's father, Dusty Rhodes, Terry is fully aware of what he is up against in the ring with the wily Texan.
The Artist Formerly Known As Prince Iaukea
He licks his fingers, dresses like the maâtre d' at Medieval times and blurts out meaningless words like "red," "sage" and "velvet." Some people backstage think The Artist might be crazy but, when they see that he has earned the adoration of the luscious Paisley, even his most ardent critics starts praying for similar institutionalization.
Once upon a time, TAFKA Prince Iaukea was considered quite sane and, according to The Powers That Be, frightfully boring. After winning the TV Title from Steven Regal in his first Nitro appearance, Iaukea slowly drifted into midcard obscurity. Both fans and show promoters didn't seem to appreciate his royal garb and unassuming nature, even though they couldn't deny his considerable fighting skills.
As a joke, The Powers decided to rename Iaukea and have him play music for WCW fans. To their chagrin, Iaukea loved the idea. Secretly, the flyin' Hawaiian had always had odd dreams and considered himself a visionary trapped in a grappler's body.
But The Artist wasn't the only WCW employee who felt trapped by their present look and occupation. Nitro Girl Storm not only felt constricted by the squad's skimpy bikini tops, she longed to leave dancing and become a full-time muse. A few days after The Artist revealed his fancy clothes and penchant for perpetual brooding, Storm begged him to add her to his entourage. Since The Artist didn't have an entourage, he quickly gave her a job and changed her name to Paisley.
Not only has The Artist's new look prompted new interest from the fans, the metamorphosis has also given this young grappler renewed confidence. Ending 1999 with a winning streak, The Artist's exquisite oddness might just lead him to more singles gold and even a platinum album (if you've heard him sing, you know the former seems far more likely).
The Total Package
A physical specimen chiseled from granite, The Total Package has everything it takes to become a permanent fixture at the top ranks of WCW. The Package has been an integral part of World Championship Wrestling since the days of the NWA.
The narcissistic grappler has won many championships throughout his 15 plus years in the business, including the WCW Tag Team gold, the US Heavyweight crown, and the WCW World Championship, on two different occasions.
As Lex Luger, he wrestled for years as a fan favorite, but his ego demanded that he change his ways, and even his name. He is now The Total Package, a moniker gained early in his career. Add to the mix the beautiful but manipulative Elizabeth, who helps plan and execute every scheme and always has a bottle of mace or a black bat close by.
Package has taken to breaking body parts lately, in part to gain the attention of Sting and other top superstars in WCW. Although not necessary, it, combined with his massive power and devastating Torture Rack, is a dangerous concoction that will no doubt take The Total Package back to championship glory.
Vampiro
True to his namesake he looms in the shadows, keeps to himself and is rarely seen during the daytime.
But when Vampiro does choose to reveal himself under the artificial lights of an arena, he's as fast, powerful and lethal as the dragons inked upon his chest.
The Canadian-born athlete learned his wrestling craft in Mexico, where instructors were stunned at his combination of size, strength and agility. It's not uncommon to see cruiserweights take to the top rope, but rarely had a man over 250 pounds utilized aerials more than once or twice in a match. Vampiro took to the sky with the ease of a bat. Combined with his martial arts skills, he became the most feared fighter south of the border.
As Vamp made his way through the ranks in WCW, many started to take notice; partially for his mysterious look, but mostly for his outstanding wrestling skills between the ropes.
Vampiro answered the call of the 14-time world champion, Ric Flair, as he placed an open challenge to anyone in the dressing room. The Nature Boy was truly tested, and this match brought a new respect from onlookers toward the painted one. Now, Vampiro is at the center of Team Package's attack, as The Total Package and Ric Flair swear to get revenge on Vamp for making them look bad. But the gothic one is not alone in his fight, for out of the darkness emerged an unsuspected ally ... his brother in paint, The Stinger.
The Wall
When The Wall steps over the ropes into the ring, his opponent knows that he will be in for the fight of his life. A man of few words, The Wall prefers to do his talking in the squared circle.
Attending Trenton State College, he played basketball during his stay at the school. After a tryout with the Dallas Cowboys, he shifted gears, joining Iron Mike Sharpe's Wrestling School in New Jersey. It was there where he met Bam Bam Bigelow. The two became friends, working shows together all around the area. He eventually wound up at the WCW Power Plant, getting more training in preparation for his WCW debut.
In 1999, The Wall debuted as the bodyguard for the German tyrant, Berlyn. Aptly named, no one could get through the monster to get to his evil boss. Eventually, a rift formed between the two and they went their separate ways.
The Wall continues to run over the competition in WCW. A perfect blend of power and agility, he stands above the rest as a true superstar in the making, and the future of World Championship Wrestling.
