| Cat Care 1: Food |
Every week we will be adding a new item to our Pet Care Advice section. We will begin with our feline friends first, starting with 'Food', the first of a four-parter on cat care.
FOOD! FOOD! FOOD! THE KITCHEN'S THIS-A WAY!
Did you know that a lot of things that cats think are scrumptious are actually very bad for them and can make them ill? Here are a few things that no matter how much mewing, leg-rubbing and feigning starvation is done by your puddy pal, you must avoid. Sorry kitties, but this is for your own good!
MILK, CREAM & CHEESE: Cats are lactose intolerant. This means they can't digest dairy products properly even though they can snarf them down at an incredible rate. Milk, cheese and cream all contain lactose and this can make your moggy a poorly puss with a sore tummy, sickness and diarrhoea.
RAW FISH & SEAFOOD: Cats can't digest raw fish and shrimps/prawns properly either, and they will make them sick too. However - and here's the good news, kits! - COOKED fish is a great treat for them.
OILY TINNED FISH: Kitties think tuna, salmon and sardines are the cat's pyjamas when it comes to snacks, but once again, these fish dishes make cats ill. So if you want to give your feline friend a seafood delight, cooked fish is the answer.
DOG FOOD: Nope, sorry, meowsers, but this stuff is bad for you too! It doesn't have the right ingredients for cats to digest it properly or the right nutrients (special goodness from the food) to keep them healthy. Anyway, kitties, why on earth would you want to eat any of *their* food!
VEGETARIAN DIET: Cats need certain nutrients to be able to stay healthy, and to get these they have to eat meat. (It is true that a *few* cats live as vegetarians, but unless you know EXACTLY the right foods to give they will become very ill. If you're not an expert on cat nutrition - don't risk it!)
CHOCOLATE: Please don't let your sweet-toothed kitty steal your choccies because chocolate is toxic (poisonous) to cats.
PLANTS: (Yep, I know this isn't what us humans find tasty, but cats can take some strange notions!) Many plants are poisonous to cats (and other pets) so make sure your foliage is kept well out of their way.
At last, feline friends - here's the GOOD STUFF...
CAT FOOD: No surprise there, huh? It may not sound very exciting, but specially manufactured cat food is what's best for your puddy. To make sure your cat gets the best possible diet, give it both wet food (the stuff in cans) and dry food (the crunchy stuff in boxes). The reason it's good to give your cat both is that an all dry food diet can eventually cause urinary problems (problems peeing - ouch!) for some cats in later life, but an all wet food diet has no crunch, and cats need something hard to nibble to keep their teeth clean and in good shape. It also gives them a bit of variation to stop them getting bored.
WATER: Isn't being thirsty horrible? Make sure your cat has a good supply of clean, fresh water every day. Yep, that's right - even if there's a lot of water still in their bowl, change it every day!
TREATS: Cats love to be spoiled (don't we all!) and there is a great range of edible (eatable) treats in the shops (pet shops* and supermarkets) made specially for cats. Minnie the Marmalade Cat just adores Felix Rascal's Reward chews!
CATNIP: Oooooooh! Yeah! Yeah! Yeah! Gimme! Gimme! Gimme! You can find catnip in pet shops and most cats just LOVE it! (Though some cats won't eat it, but just roll around in it having a ball!)
KITTY GRASS: You can buy cat grass from pet shops to grow for your puss. This is very good for their digestion and helps stop them getting yukky furballs.
*PET SHOP UPDATE: Please do not buy any pet supplies from PetsMart pet shops. It has been revealed by the media (BBC's 'Watchdog' and several national newspapers) that they are cruel to the animals they have for sale. See our 'Animals in the News' page for details. |
