Chapter One
Hi! My name is Marie Caldron. I'm ten years old. I have a mom, a dad, and a sister named Suzie. I have two best friends named Kristen and Jessica.
Right now, I'm riding my bike to Kristen's house for a sleepover. Kristen's sleepovers are the best! She always has a surprise in store. Last time, Kristen made a treasure hunt - with clues and all! Jessica won the prize, a bag full of scrunchies and other things for your hair.
As I pulled into Kristen's driveway, I wondered what she had in store this time. I would soon find out.
I parked my bike in the opened garage. I went inside of Kristen's house. Kristen, Jessica, and Miranda were already there. They were seated in the living room, talking.
"Hi, Marie," Kristen said, "we just need to wait for Ellen, Amber, and Chelsea- then we can start."
"We were just talking about Kristen's surprise," Miranda explained, "she said we have to stay down here 'til everyone comes."
"It's a surprise- in the attic."
"You make it sound so weird," Jessica commented, "like the attic has something totally strange."
"Well, it is!" Kristen protested.
Those two are always fighting. I'm not so sure how they stay in piece when they're together. They make a simple thing seem like the end of the world and they have to fight for the last two seconds.
Then the doorbell rang. Just in time, I thought. It was Chelsea and Amber. They're cousins - so they always are coming together.
"Hi!" Amber said. She is always so cheerful all the time. Chelsea, on the hand, is always gloomy. Don't ask why - but Chelsea sometimes has bright ideas, but never acts cheerful about anything.
"Hello," Chelsea said, plopping on the couch, "let's get started, already."
Another thing about Chelsea, she is never patient. Believe me, I know!
"No," Kristen said, "we have to wait 'til Ellen comes. I have a surprise in the attic. So we have stay down here 'til everyone comes."
Never hide something from Chelsea.
"Oh, really," Chelsea began -but Ellen came just in time. "Hi!" she said, popping right in.
"Come on!" Chelsea said, running up the stairs.
"You're a lifesaver." I heard Kristen say under her breath to Ellen.
Anyway, we practically flew to the attic. It was amazing when we got into the room. It was like being in a witch's house. There were fake cobwebs everywhere. There was a shelf of bottles of magic potions. A huge black pot and a book of spells were set in the middle. But somehow, it looked liked Kristen's room.
There was a bed, a closet, and all of Kristen's stuff she kept in her room.
Then she spoke, "How do you like my new and improved room?"
We all started to talk at once.
"How did you do it?"
"Was it expensive?"
"It looks fabulous!"
"This is totally amazing!"
"Could we do it?"
"This is so cool!"
"This is great!"
"Wow, I love it!"
" This is actually your room?"
Kristen put up her hands so we would stop talking. We quieted down.
"I'll explain everything." Kristen said. "I took a book about Halloween and witches from the library. I got so into it. Then at the back of the book was a form to fill out to get 'scary decorations for your own room for $32.00'.
"I asked the librarian, Mrs. Broom, if I could use the copy machine to copy it. She said I could keep it. She always gave me that fake book-" she pointed to the fake spell book- "just so it would look spooky. Cool, huh?"
"It's neat!" Miranda said.
"It's great!" Amber said.
"I love it!" Ellen said.
Even Chelsea loved it. So did I. We explored Kristen's room for a while. Then Chelsea said, "Let's watch a movie or do something."
"We can rollerblade," I suggested.
Just then, Mrs. Calvin, Kristen's mom popped on the room. "Would you girls like some snacks or anything 'til the pizza comes?" she asked.
"No thanks, mom," Kristen said, "we were just about to go rollerblading."
"Oh, okay, wear helmets and be careful then."
"Yes, mom."
Then Kristen's mom left. We got all our rollerblades and went outside. There was still a bit of light outside, so we could still rollerblade.
We all skated up and down Hat Avenue, which is Kristen's street. Soon it got dark though, and started to rain.
"Uh oh," Kristen said, "I guess we'd better go inside. We'll get soaked!"
So, we hurried into Kristen's house as fast as we could.
We decided to play with Jessica's Ouija board, after we had been settled in Kristen's room and had our share of pizza.
"Let's start already." Chelsea complained.
We put our hands on the indicator.
"What should we ask?" Ellen said.
"Hmm," Kristen said, "I don't know. Do you have an idea, Marie?"
"What about, are you here with us now?" I suggested.
"That's okay with me." Amber answered, cheerfully.
"Okay, spirits of the dead," Kristen said, "are you here with us now?"
The indicator moved! It went to 'yes'. There were "wow" and "how did that happen?" said all over the room.
"What do we ask now?" Chelsea asked, impatiently.
"What about, are you a very evil spirit?" I suggested.
"Are you a very evil spirit?" Kristen asked it.
The indicator moved and spelled YES-NOW- I-WILL-GET-YOU.
Then the lights went out. Somebody screamed. I heard Kristen and Jessica starting to laugh. Then the lights went back on.
"Did you like our joke?" Jessica asked.
"It was okay." Miranda said.
"Did Kristen and you move the indicator?" I asked Jessica.
"Yup, I also turned off the lights when everyone wasn't looking." Jessica answered. Then she snickered.
I nodded in approval. "I guess that was a very good trick." I said.
We talked for awhile after that. Around ten o'clock, we sat in sleeping bags and watched a horror movie. At eleven thirty, we told ghost stories. Jessica went first.
"Once there was a girl named Britney," Jessica said, "One day, she went into a forest. She kept walking and walking, and walking. Soon it was dark, so she had to settle. She found a tree, sat next to it. Soon she was fast asleep. At dawn, she woke to an evil and wicked surprise." Jessica paused.
"Continue!" Kristen snapped.
"I forgot the rest." Jessica said, giggling.
"Come on, Jess." Chelsea said. "I'm really not in the mood for this right now, or any other time
"
"Oh, fine." Jessica started to continue. "She woke up to an evil and wicked surprise, like I said. She really imagined it. So she ran and ran. Finally she came to a small cottage. There was no one in it, at least Britney thought there wasn't."
"So was there?" I asked.
Jessica rested her head on her chin.
"Gee," she answered. "I haven't really figured that part out yet."
Kristen threw a pillow at her.
"Fine, fine, fine," Jessica said, plopping down again. "It was a Beverly Hills mansion for my sake! Just listen, I want to finish now, okay?"
We all just stared and giggled at Jessica.
"I can see I'm not getting anywhere where with this story." Jessica said, sighing.
So we threw all of our pillows at her, which started a pillow fight. That lasted 'til about 12:00. I knew we got Kristen's surprise already, but I still thought there had to be something more to it.
"Is there something else you had planned?" I asked Kristen.
She smiled. "You'll see," she answered. So then knew there was something else! Then to everyone else too, she said, "And now, for another surprise, we're going to look for things in this box full of stuff, but the only way to find the things is to look threw all the Easter fake grass to find the things. You each can get three things. Go ahead now." She pulled out a box from the closet.
It was a really big box. I mean really HUGE! I almost touched the ceiling, well, maybe 5 inches away.
"How do we go look for the stuff?" Ellen asked, looking at Kristen like she didn't believe it.
Kristen smiled. "You mean you don't want to climb?" Then she looked hurt.
"Oh, no way!" Ellen said. Then Kristen bursted out laughing, pulling out a ladder. Then Ellen laughed too. Soon, we are all in the box with flashlights, looking for our prizes. It really was fun I'll admit, but the fun really started when we started to find things. I was the first to find something. I was over looking a spot when I found it.
"Hey, look!" I said, when I found it. It was wrapped in a wrapping paper to match the fake grass. I felt it. It was a hard, flat, square package. Then everyone came over to look.
"Wow!" Miranda said. "You're the first one to find a prize."
"Open it," Chelsea said, "Open it already!"
Kristen smiled. "Don't open it yet, Marie. Here, everyone, take a bag."
I was the one smiling the most. Then Jessica found a soft package, and so on. Soon, everyone had three prizes.
"Okay," Kristen said, "Come over here. On three, we have to push over this box 'cause it's the only way out. One
Two
and THREE! PUSH!"
So we pushed and we toppled over. We started to laugh at each other right away. We had fake grass in our hair and everywhere! But soon we were all cleaned up and ready to open our prizes. Let me describe my prizes to you, other than the one I told you about already. My second prize was soft and a funny shape. And last, I had a huge box shape like package.
"Now we can open our prizes!" Kristen said. "Oh, but only open two. The last one is for home."
"Hey," Chelsea said, "I think that is unfair!"
Kristen smiled. "I don't think so. Here," she said, "I'll take one of your prizes away 'til tomorrow so you don't get tempted."
Chelsea groaned. But we ignored her and started to open our first prize. Do you remember that hard, small, square package that I found first? Well, it was a CD! Then I opened the soft package. It was a beanie animal holding nail polish and a jar of glitter for your hair.
I yawned. Kristen laughed. "Don't get tired yet," she warned, mischievously, "There are many surprises yet to come!"
Chelsea looked over to us. "Like what?" she asked.
Kristen laughed. "Thou shall not tell!" she said, with a strange and funny accent.
We all started laughing bitterly. Kristen does that a lot, you know. Always not telling us what she is going to do, and tells us something like "Yee shall see," and stuff like that.
Kristen smiled. "If you really want to know, " she said, making Jessica and Chelsea totally impatient.
Ellen and I looked at each other and each of us threw a pillow at Jessica and Chelsea.
"Hey!" Chelsea said. "Just tell us what it is!"
"Yea!" Jessica said, rubbing her elbow. "I have had enough of this pillow tossing at me!"
Kristen sighed. "Alright," she said, "Ready for this?"
We all nodded while Jessica was held back by Miranda.
"Everyone has to come down to the kitchen," she explained. "Then we will have a relay race."
"Inside?" I asked, wondering how we could run inside.
Kristen laughed. "Of course, silly," she said, "Besides it's not a running relay race. Since there are seven of us, an uneven number, your first person on whatever team has three has to go twice. Anyway, there are four stages, one for each player. Come on, I'll show you."
So we followed her downstairs, where everything was set up. "This is cool!" Miranda said.
Amber nodded. "So, Kristen, could you please tell us more?"
Kristen nodded. "Of course," she answered. "Now the first stage is making a special drink with the ingredients on your section. The trick is, you have to use at least four ingredients. Then you put it in the blender- there are two- and the person next has to drink it all up before they can do their stage.
"The second stage is where you have to take all the jewelry and put it on. Next, you take the blush, lipstick, and eye shadow and put lots of it on. Then the third person has to take the hair stuff- things like brushes, glitter, hair ties, cans of washable hair dye- and has to put in that second person's hair.
"The third stage is where there is a bunch of play dough and we make it in a form of like an animal or a person. They put on the skateboard and send it over to the fourth person. The fourth person sends it back again and the third person sits on the creation and rolls themselves to the fourth stage where the fourth person will begin.
"Finally, the fourth stage is where she has to make her own sundae. Then she has to record a jingle, for the sundae, on the tape recorder. Then all of the teammates have to put it all together to make a commercial for the sundae. Whoever finishes first wins! Shall we begin?" she finished, laughing.
So we split ourselves into two teams- one team with Amber, Ellen, and Miranda, and another team with Kristen, Jessica, Chelsea, and me. I was going to do the second event!
So we soon were set up and ready to play. Ellen and Chelsea got into position, since they were in the first event.
"On your mark," Kristen said, "Get set, go!"
So they were off to a good start. I quickly got into position when Chelsea was finishing up. Then I hurriedly sipped to cold, mushy, and disgusting drink that Chelsea had created.
"What did you put into that drink!?!" I said to Chelsea, putting on the jewelry.
Chelsea laughed and then said, "Witches' potion ingredients!"
Out of the corner of my eye, I saw Kristen nudge Chelsea and then went to her station to do my hair. Chelsea mouthed, "Sorry," while Kristen took some things and started to do my hair. Kristen then rolled her eyes and continued to fix up my hair.
"Hey!" I said.
Kristen was rainbow coloring my hair!
Kristen giggled. "Too bad." She answered."Just let me finish."
"What a nice friend you are," I said, very sarcastically.
"I know," Kristen said, handing the hand mirror to me, then going to her station.
I screamed when I saw how I looked. What a clown!
"You're going to get it, Kristen!" I said. But Kristen just smiled.
Soon it was time for the jingle part. Jessica had made a silly jingle for the potato chip sundae she had made. We all sang a little tune, and even danced a little. Though, I wasn't sure if we were keeping up with the other team. Anyway, now it is time for the commercial!
"If you love potato chips," we sang. "Then you might like dips! But this sundae is better, the chips get wetter!" Next, we all came together and did a kick line while saying, "This sundae is like, oh, no other! You don't even need butter! So buy this sundae for only $1,000.99! Yea!"
At the same time we said yea, the other team was done too.
"Who won?" Ellen asked.
"Hmmm," Kristen said, "I really don't know. Let's check the pictures and tape."
"What?" we all screeched at the same time. Who would of known that we were being videotaped!
Kristen laughed. "It was my mom's idea," she explained. "I knew we would have an even better time that way. My mom took the pictures, and there was a camera over there, but no one noticed. Come on, let's go see how we turned out in my room."
So we all trailed upstairs.
"I can't wait to see how silly we all looked!" Amber exclaimed.
Kristen grinned. "I knew you'd all like it." She said, popping the video in.
We all crowded around to take a look at it. The first shot was where Chelsea and Ellen were making their drinks. Now I know what Chelsea put in the one she made. Boy, was it awful!
Of course there were tons of shots that were hilarious, but the best one was when we did the ending in the kick line where some of our slippers came off. Mine landed in the blender!
By the end of the tape, we were all laughing. But we all had seen that it was a perfect tie.
"Well," Kristen said, "then I guess that we all get prizes!"
"Prizes?" we all shouted at once.
"Yea," Kristen answered, "There're in the basement, let's go."
So we followed Kristen to the basement and I couldn't believe what I saw!
Chapter Two
There were six baby kittens! "Black Jack and Chimney Dust-" Kristen's beautiful cats-"had babies! Since there are six of them, my mom said to give one of each to each of you. My mom already called your parents and they said you could each have one."
Then everyone choose a cat, which were all black except for one. Which was strange because Kristen's cats were both blacks, they just had white splotches here and there. But the cat wasn't black or white; it was white and orange!
"She's so cute!" I said, picking up the white and orange one.
Kristen laughed. "I was surprised that you would pick that one, Marie," she said. "But I guess your choice is your choice. They can all sleep down here, so let's go upstairs. More surprises await."
Everyone, including me put down their cats into the huge basket and followed Kristen. I felt someone coming after me, so I zipped around. The orange and white cat was following me! The weird thing was that all the other cats stayed in their basket.
"Looks like your new cat likes you already!" Miranda said.
Ellen giggled and said; "Now the other cats are coming!"
And they were! One by one, the others came. Kristen saw all this and said, "Well, I guess they can come with us."
So we took our brand new cats with us upstairs.
It had seemed like we had soaked up all the sleepover fun you could ever have, but Kristen said she had a lot more planned. We watched Kristen's new movie with our cats.
I couldn't decide what to name my cat. Everyone else picked names like Furball or Midnight, but I really wanted an original name for my original cat.
"Strawberry!" I bursted out during the movie.
"What?" everyone asked, puzzled by what I exclaimed out.
"I'll name my cat Strawberry," I explained.
"Whatever," Kristen said, returning back to the movie along with everyone else.
I stroked Strawberry. Who cares if no one cares? I don't. But I'm glad I figured out a name for her before I drove myself crazy.
After the movie, we went into Kristen's game room and played with her pool table, skee-ball table, basketball hoop, and other games. By then, it was 3:00 AM.
"I don't know about you," Amber said, "but I'm going to bed. I have a cheerleading competition tomorrow."
"Me, too," Miranda said.
"Okay, guys," Kristen said, "you guys can sleep in the guest room upstairs. Good night."
Amber and Miranda went upstairs.
"Let's open our other prizes," Chelsea suggested, hopefully.
Kristen sighed. "Okay, fine. Everyone get their last prize."
So we gathered and tore the wrapping of our prizes quickly.
"What's this?" I said, when I opened my prize.
It was a big book that said "WITCHES: NOW AND FOREVER."
"Guys," I said, "Is this some kind of joke?"
Kristen bit her lip and looked at Ellen. Ellen looked at Jessica with a worried look. Chelsea just looked down.
"Is there something I need to know?"
I asked, getting nervous.
"Sort of," Kristen said.
Now I knew there was more than sort of somehow.
Chapter Three
Jessica took a deep breath and started, "Listen, Marie, there IS something you might need to know."
"This isn't a joke either," Ellen added.
"Marie," Kristen said, "we are witches."
I laughed. "Right and I'm a witch too."
"That is true too," Chelsea shot back.
Kristen exchanged a look with Ellen that said, "SHE ISN'T BELIEVING THIS!"
"Marie," Kristen said, sternly, "This isn't a joke!"
I thought for a moment. "Well," I said, "do you swear on the holy bible that it's true?"
Kristen sent a very desperate look to Jessica.
"Witches don't believe in that sort of bible," Jessica said. "We believe in that bible you are holding."
I slowly looked at that book. It was identical to the one Kristen had in her room.
"Let us explain everything to you," Chelsea said. "First of all, the things you heard about witches are probably true. You see there are a lot of groups of witches around. But we all follow the same book. I belong to the FAST group. I fly on vacuums and only use the best of technology. Also, my group wants everything on time, like I do."
"I'm part of the TRUE group," Kristen said. "We're like the goody two shoes of witches. We hate the POWER group, which is Jessica."
"No wonder why you two fight all the time," I exclaimed.
