My alarm clock rang and I was instantly awaken. It was the first day of sixth grade and I didn't want to be late. (Though usually I would of stayed in a few minutes longer!) I brushed off the covers and headed for the bathroom connecting to my room. It was decorated in my favorite colors: green, silver, and purple. After I took a shower and brushed my hair, I headed for my walk in closet. "Decision, decisions," I mumbled. Over the summer I had gone to the mall at least three times a week and bought clothes for the first day of school. Only I hadn't relized that I only needed ONE outfit for this day. I looked through all my outfits, mismatching and matching, trying on and fitting, for about an hour. Finally I was down to three choices: a black skirt jumper with a purple striped tee, or dressy black bell bottoms with a really kool shirt, or white bell bottom jeans with a dark blue satin blouse. Sighing, I chose the black bell bottoms with a really kool shirt. I pulled my hair back in a tight bun and ran downstairs. "Yikes!" It was 7:30, and I promised my best friends (Angie, Haley, and Christine) that I would meet them at the bus stop at 7:20! I grabbed my bookbag and ran for the door. So much for being early on the first day of school! Knowing that I didn't I have much time, I couldn't run to the stop. I would totally mess up my hair and that's not a good look on the first day. Power walking all the way there, I made it in five minutes flat. "Where were you, Nicole?" Angie asked right away. "I couldn't choose an outit," I explained. Haley giggled. "Umm, Nicole, nice outfit and all but your shirt is on backwards." I looked down. She was right to my dispair. I groaned. "Just change it when we get to school," Christine said, flipping her hair back. "Easy for you to say," I muttered. Christine always looked great with her curly blondhair and blueeyes, and it was SO unfair! Though people said I was pretty and stuff and envied me, I'm have straight long black hair and blue eyes. "Come on," Haley said, pushing me in front of her since the bus just arrived. I slid all the way to the back of the bus, where my friends and I usaully sat. "I can't wait for English class," Angie said as she sat next me. "Miss Duren is supposed to be really cool." I nodded. "Yea." Angie was my fave of all my friends. She and I had most of our classes together so we did alot of projects together usaully. "Get dressed in the dark today, Nicky?" Valerie Hortel, an eighth grader I know, asked. Some kids nearby laughed. I gritted my teeth. "Can it, Val," I said. She smirked and went to her seat. But it didn't end there. "Oh, I get it," Jake Wandle, a seventh grader, said. "It's part of a fashion statement. Is frontwards out of season now?" "Whatever," I said. "You wouldn't know fashion if it hit you on the nose so back off." "Oooo," he said, pretending to shiver. "I'm scared now." "You should be," I said. "And aren't those type of cargo shorts totally out of style or what?" "Not really," he replied, grinning lopsided. "I can't argue no more," I said, turning back to my seat. "I don't waste my energy on losers." "Hey!" Jake said. "You callin me a loser?" I knew I was pushing it. "Yea," I said. HE got up from his seat. "Why I outta-" "Sit down!" the bus driver barked as the bus started to move. Jake held up his fit to me and returned to his seat. "Did you get the new issue of the 90's yet?" I asked Angie. She shook her head. The bus rolled into the front on the school. Everyone got off the bus so slowly I thought that I would never make it out in time! "See you in homeroom!" I called to my friends and ran towards the bathroom to change my shirt. After that was taken care of, I went to my locker, number 101. I stuffed some junk in there and went to homeroom. It was noisy when I got there. I looked to the far corner where Angie, Christine, and Haley HADN'T saved me a seat! I walked over to them. "How come you didn't save me a seat?" I asked dissapointed. Christine shrugged. "We couldn't cause someone already saved you a seat over there." She pointed to the other side. I peeked over there and groaned in desperration. Jake was in our homeroom (even though he's a seventh grader) and was smiling goffily cause he had saved me a front row seat!!! Out of all things!!! I sighed and carried my books to the front. Everybody knew that if you sat in the front, Mr. Hirdol (the homeroom teacher) would defintly pick on you about your summer vacation and loads and loads of other things. I guess he waws still mad at me for the bus situation. Sitting down, I looked at who sat aruond me...Shannon, Margie, Eddi, and Samantha. Great. Nerds R US. "Good morning everybody!" Mr. Hirdol boomed out, which made me jump. "This will be a short homeroom session of course, but since it's the frist day I'd like to talk about summer vacation." Everybody groaned and sighed- including me. "So let's start with Nicole," he said, to my total humilation. He turned to me. "What did you do in your vacation, other than go shopping with you clique every day?" I reddened while people giggled. "No," I said. "I went to New York for two weeks, Florida for three weeks, and a couple other places." "Oooh," he said. "I see. You had to get the latest fashions there. Okay, did you read any books?" I thought for a minute. "The Summer Edition of the 90's, and some other magazines." HE cleard his throat. "I mean hard cover books, Miss Drewe." I blushed while my classmates had a few laughs. "Not really, Mr. Hirdol," I said. He scratched his chin. "Then I have a marvoulous idea! I'll tell your English teacher to give you class a book reprt for homework tonight. You can thank Nicole for giving me this idea." Everybody stared at me and some said things like, "Way to go Nicole!" or "Thanks, Nicole." "Don't mention it," I said under my breath. I met Angie at the doorway and we wakled to Science class together. "IT's only the morning and my day is already a total blowout!" I exclaimed. Angie smiled. "Not really. Besides, nothing can go wrong in Science class. Miss Yondle never pays any attention to us, and we are always paired up together in the back." I nodded. "You're right." We entered the classroom and of course went to the back bench where we would usually sit. "SO far so good," I mumbled, though the class had just started. "Good morning," Miss Yondle said. "Since the number in Science 2 in sixth grade has increased, the more advanced of you will be going to Mrs. Joy in room 505." Angie and I exchanged glances. Mrs. Joy was very tough and ALWAYS paid attention to every single student. "The following students who will be go there are: Shannon Holeui, Jack Milo, Daina Gilio, Samantha Drake, Eddi Sindde, Rena Achit, Timonthy Youth, Allene Steff, Lulu Gandi, RIckie Smith, and Nicole Drewe." I collasped onto the floor. This couldn't be happening! I got a Cplus in fifth grade Science last year! "Something wrong, Miss Drewe?" I looked up. "Everything," I muttered, and stormed out with the rest to room 505. Other than the Science class being boring, it was annoying. I really shouldn't have been in such a high science class sice I didn't understnad alot of things, but I made due. The next class was History, where most seventh graders are and none of my friends are there. I've had the teacher, Miss Dinail, before and she is okay. A little on the strict side but nothing major. I stepped into the room and took a seat in the middle. I had enough bad luck being in the back for one day! But unluckily enough, Miss Dinail said, "I'm going to assign seats for this quarter." THerefore, I ended up sitting next to Jake and Valerie. Luckily, we were all so busy that noone was chatty. Basically, I just said hi to them and they said hi back. My favorite part of the school day was next: LUNCH. Angie, Christine, Haley, and I met up at our usual table. "How's the rest of your day going?" Angie asked me. I shrugged. "Normal, I guess. Nothing seroiusly bad." After lunch I just had two more classes for today, since it was an A day: art and gym. Art is one my fave classes since it's the class where Miss Blue is. She is a terriffic teacher. Plus, even though non of friends are in it, I don't have time to talk. I made it smoothly through that class, and finally it was gym. It was the only class where Angie, Christine, Haley, and I were together. The teacher, Ms. Ukalely, is okay. She lets us play softball, soccor, basketball, or differrent sports. Today, she decided on basketball. The game went great! My team won: 12 to 18. The busride was a normal one, no fights or aguments. When I got home, my mom asked me, "How was your day?" And I said, "Tireding.

I hurried downstairs to the kitchen. It was my birthday today, and I was SO excited. Me, Nicole, here. As usual, my family will provide a surprise party. They'll be like pretending they don't know it's my birthday. Then later my mom will take me out to go grocerie shopping or whatever. When I come back everyone will shout "Surprise!" and jump out from the dark. It happens every year. Boring and bland, but sometimes it's interresting. When I entered the kitchen, mom said, "Good morning, Nicole." I smiled. "Good morning. Have any surprises planned?" My mom looked at me, puzzled. "What are you talking about?" I giggled. "Never mind." Might as well just play along! I sat down at the table. Hmmm, I wonder what they got me for gifts. I had wanted a brand new outfit I saw and some other things. But I never mentioned it. And the amazing thing was that I hadn't talk about my birthday at all, and neither did my friends or family. Definalty weird. But I know it's okay. After breakfast the day flew by quickily. I met up with Angie and Christine for a movie, and then I wentto the mall. It was 5:00, and I was getting pretty worried about the surprise party. "I'm going gorcerie shopping," my mom said. "Wanna come, Nicky?" I smiled. "Of course. I always do." My mom practically fainted. "You never want to come!" It was the truth."I have to today," I protested. She gave me a confused expression. "If you say so!" During grocerie shopping, I kept giving my mom huge hints about how excited I was, and how I love surprises. But she just stared at me or said, "You are acting very strange today, Nicole." When we got home, I ran up to the front door and opened it. I sropped my mouth open in surprise. The lights were on, no party decorations, and no guests!"Where is everybody?" I asked, completely confused. My mom arrived at my side. "What on earth are you talking about?" "T-the surprise party," I stammered. "Today's not your birthday," my mom answered.THEEND Copyright©danilewicz.net,1999 |
