My Friend's Invention
By: Sara Danilewicz
Hi, I'm Lauren Blue. Today is my friend, Jennifer's birthday. She just moved in the house next door two and a half weeks ago. So, as I was saying, it's her birthday, her party is tonight though. I really want to get her something that she will like. My mom is going to take me to the mall to get her gift. I have zip clue about what she wants. "Laurie!" my mom called. Everybody calls me Laurie. I went downstairs. "Yea, mom?" I answered. "We're going to go to the mall now, I just found out that I have a doctor appointment this afternoon. So get your coat, and let's go." I went to my room and got my coat. "Ready." I said, as I walked in the kitchen again. "Okay, let's go." We drove to the central mall. "There's a new store-------- can we go there?" I asked. "Sure," my mom answered. The new store was called "Maria's." As we walked in, I wasn't so sure that I'd get Jennifer's present there. It seemed like
well, like old- but it was a new store. "Um
" I bit my lip. "I'm not so sure about -". Then I stopped. Something caught my eye. An invention kit! I looked at what it said. It said how you could make a lot of cool stuff. I knew Jennifer would love it. She said the other day that she won contest for her craft- so I think she likes making things. I checked the price, $34.50. "Mom," I said, "I found something for Jennifer." "That's nice," mom said, as she looked it over, "I'm sure she'll love it." We paid for the kit. The kit was sure heavy- and big too! I sure hope she'll like it. Soon, my mom told me that I could walk over to Jennifer's house. "Okay," I said, getting my coat, "I'll see you in two hours." I got my homemade card and her wrapped gift. I went outside. I could see Jennifer on her porch with a few girls from school. I walked over. "Hi, everyone," I said, "Happy b-day, Jenny!" "Thanks!" she said. We played in the yard for about an hour. Then we had a delicious cake and pizza- yummy! Then it was time to open gifts. She opened her parent's gift first. It was a pair of ice-skates and a gymnast leotard. Then, four gifts later, was mine. She ripped the pink and blue wrapping paper off. "Neat!" Jennifer exclaimed. "Thanks
" She looked at the card. "Thanks, Laurie!" Everyone crowed to see. I wonder what she'll make. After people started leaving, I decided to tell Jennifer happy birthday and go- it was getting late. "Happy b-day!" I said to Jennifer. "Thank you for inviting me to your party." "You're welcome," Jennifer said. "And I bet you're wondering what I'm going to make?" I grinned and said yes. "Come here tomorrow," Jennifer said, "And I'll show you." "I'll be here." We smiled and I left. I couldn't wait to find out. Soon it was morning though, and I called Jennifer right after breakfast- to see if I could come now. "Yea!" she answered, and we hung up. I practically ran the way. I rang the bell twice. Finally, Jennifer answered. She grinned. "Ready?" she asked. I nodded. "Come on then," she said, "It's in the backyard." I followed her to her backyard. There was a very small tent, with wheels and two seats inside. I gasped. It was so neat! Jennifer smiled. "I'd knew you'd like it. If you want, we can go around two blocks, I tried it last night to see how it works." "Yes!" I said. "I love it!" We went into the flaps. I sat down on a seat- made of a bike seat and pillows. "Buckle your seat belt, Laurie," Jennifer said, pointing to the seat belt, made of some kind of very strong string. There was a steering wheel in the middle of the two seats, and a switch. And there was even a cup holder! You had to pedal to move. Jennifer and I started to pedal. She pedaled so hard, her legs ached. "You don't have to pedal so hard," I said, gently. She blushed. "Because we're together." I added. That made her smile. Then we were off. I guess we both put in a little something into the fun invention. I put in the gift, and Jennifer put in the making- but we both put in friendship. I guess it didn't matter much that we had it or not- even though we did- but it's so great that I'm a friend with Jennifer. I guess that's all that matters.
