The floating plants are some of the better water clarification plants. The reason for this is these plants roots are totaly exposed to the water and their nutrition is drawn directly out of the water this reduces the amount of nutrients available for algaes.

Marginal plants are found as their name implies along the edges or margins of bodies of water. These plants can grow in the moist soil above the water line or with their roots submerged slightly under the water. In a garden pond these plants highlight the edges of the pond and help soften the blend between the water areas and the land.

The deepwater plants are the oxygenators of the pond. these plants live in the deeper water. Some have underwater leaves that never reach the suface and are in the pond to do a job. Others like the waterlily belong in the pond because of their eye appealing beauty and their leaves offer good shading to slow the growth of algae and provide shelter for fish and other aquatic life. I believe water gardening would not have become so popular if there were no water lilys.
