Tip # 1 Be sure that your planned filter is able to process a least 2/3 of your pond volume per hour preferably the whole pond volume at least once per hr.
Tip # 2 Get a pump that does not contain oil in the pump body. Otherwise it is only a matter of time till that oil ends up in your pond.
Tip # 3 For ease of cleaning and maintenance an out of pond filter system is best.
Tip # bottom drains are highly recomended
Tip #Surface skimmers floating or shore mounted
Tip # Larger than you want for first pond
Tip # Do not overstock with fish
Tip #call localwater authorities for water qualities data
Tip # spend lots of time understanding how to edge and how to prepare for this edging
Tip # check with building authorities about restrictions on pond size and fencing
Tip # think about possible local predators and how to foil them
Tip # Calculate power requirements, placement of various energy using devices and where to route cables and conduits
Tip # Never use a power source around any water that is not connected to a tested G.F.C.I. circuit

Tip #aim for a surface coverage of plants of 60% or more
Tip #Ponds can hold fish far beyond what is normaly recomended if the filtration system is built to take that size of bio load and is maintained regularly
Tip # Read about the biological processes that take place in a pond until you understand the relationships completely
Tip #Water changes are the easiest way of keeping a pond in balance
