Owen Research Text
Owen Family as it relates to Clayton Family. Allied families include: Allen, Barnett, Clark, Clayton, Looney, Mcmann, McIlroy, Owen

John Owen

Its Jacobs father that is giving us a headache. One census shows his birthplace as Ohio, however, his wife furnished the information for his death certificate and says he was born in KY. So we are looking in both places.

Update - November 27, 2002

Finally found the parents of Jacob D. "Jake" Owen. Found them in White County, IL. First found Jacob living with cousin in 1880 census and then was able to find parents, John Owen and Rachel White on earlier census.

Update - October 10, 2004

Speculation that John Owen's father is Nathan Owen of Indiana, mother unknown. Also, that Rachel White's father is Isaac White of Lousiana Territory, Indiana, White County, IL. Isaac White married Margaret Unknown (Hutchcraft perhaps).

Owen, J. L., age 24, farmer, native of AR, married Miss White in 1906, 1 child, Vada, 224 acres hill and creek, 25 acres in use, no church given.

GRANDPA OWEN WAS A SMALL MAN, ABOUT 5 FOOT 8 INCHES TALL AND ABOUT 150 POUNDS. HE WAS A SHARECROPPER THAT FARMED WITH MULES. HE NEVER OWNED A TRACTOR OR AN AUTOMOBILE. HE NEARLY DIED WITH THE FLU EPIDEMIC OF 1917/18. HIS FIRST WIFE DID DIE WITH THE FLU AND HE WAS SO SICK THAT HE HAD TO PUT HIS CHILDREN IN AN ORPHANAGE IN KANSAS WHERE THEY HAD GONE FOR THE WHEAT HARVEST. HE DID RECOVER AND GET HIS CHILDREN AND RETURN TO ARKANSAS. NEIGHBORS CAME TO KANSAS AND TOOK HIS WIFE HOME FOR BURIAL. HE RETIRED AT THE AGE OF 65 AND LIVED TO BE 92. HE TOLD ME STORIES OF WHEN HE WAS A YOUNG MAN IN RAVENDEN SPRINGS, AR., RIDING THE HILLS WITH A GUN ON HIS HIP. HE HAD A PLEASANT PERSONALITY AND WAS FRIENDLY TO EVERYONE. HE TOOK ME FISHING ONCE AND I LET THE BIG ONE GET AWAY, HE KIDDED ME ABOUT IT FOR QUITE AWHILE. SUBMITTED BY BOYCE W. CLAYTON.

122 Manuel "Manly" Jackson OWEN

Manuel "Manly" Jackson (1888-1920) was born in West Plains, Howell Cty, MO December 1, 1888. He married Ella Catherine LANE (1893-1953) in Randolph County, AR, November 23, 1911. Manuel died January 14, 1920 in Randolph Cty, AR, at 31 years of age. His body was interred in Randolph Cty, AR, Sanders Cemetery. Research by: Anthony Wayne Clayton LDS Colorado Springs, Co. 1998.

1910 Randolph County Ar. census. List Manly 21 years of age still in the household of Father and Mother. The following information from Bobby Gene Crawford grandson of Manuel Jackson Owen.

MANUEL JACKSON OWEN, (my grandfather) was born December 1 1888, in HOWELL COUNTY, WEST PLAINS, MO. There was no birth certificate. Have copy of page of recorded births in West Plains. Records show two male children born December 1, 1888. Both newborns, list father as JACOB OWEN, mother as ELIZABETH LUNY. One child is recorded as OWEN, the other as OWENS. Father is listed as born in ILLINOIS, mother in ARKANSAS. Father's occupation for one child listed as tombstone agent, for the other as stonecutter. Apparently these two were twins. Our big mystery, who is the other twin, what was his name, and when, where, and why did he die? MANUEL JACKSON OWEN, married ELLA CATHERINE LANE, 23 November 1911. Marriage certificate lists MANUEL as being 22 years old. This would match with 1888 DOB. MANUEL JACKSON died January 14, 1920. Buried SANDERS CEMETARY, RANDOLPH COUNTY ARKANSAS, near RICHWOODS COMMUNITY in LAWRENCE COUNTY ARKANSAS. State of Arkansas could produce no death certificate. Thus we have no actual birth or death certificate. We DO have a copy of his draft registration, dated June 5, 1917where he states he was born in West Plains MO self employed farmer at Dalton Ark. With a wife and two children.

Third Generation

3. JOHN LOONEY3 OWEN* (JACOB D. "JAKE"*2, JOHN*1) was born in Ravenden Springs, AR. July 24, 1885. JOHN OWEN* died September 14, 1977 in Malden, Dunklin Co., MO, at 92 years of age. His* body was interred in Memorial Park Cemetery Malden, MO.
He* married twice. He* married MAUDE "MAUDIE" WHITE* 1906. MAUDE* was born in Dalton, AR 1890. MAUDE* 2 was the daughter of HENRY HOWELL WHITE and SUZANNE REYNOLDS. MAUDE* died 1918 in Wichita, Kansas, at 28 years of age. Her* body was interred 1918 in Ravenden Springs, AR. Personal Story by Maudie and John Owen Daughter, LaVada Owen. Malden, Mo. 1998. The story was relayed to John's grand daughter, Annis Gayle (Clayton) Jarrell.
A lot of people were getting sick there in Ravenden Springs, AR. and Maudie had a dream that John got real sick and died, and that she saw him in his casket. They picked up their belongings and left by train to Kansas. They went to Maudie's sisters in Wichita, Kansas, a Mattie White that married Milton Bowlin. Maudie was already sick and they were all feeling bad. LaVada "Vada" remembers her dad calling out the window to the next door neighbor and telling her they were all sick and needed a doctor. The woman who was a Dr. went on to the hospital and sent a Dr. Black back to the house to see to them. He got a nurse to come and stay to help out. Her mother (Maudie) died and they thought John was dead three times but he finally recovered. Some cousins (Brown) brought her mother back to Ravenden Springs, AR.? and she is buried there. Vada says she was 10, Lois was 7, Willie 5, and Virgil was 4 months. They were put in an orphanage for two months while her dad recovered. After he recovered he and the children went back to Ark.

In September of 1918, soldiers at an army base near Boston suddenly began to die. The cause of death was identified as influenza, but it was unlike any strain ever seen. As the killer virus spread across the country, hospitals overfilled, death carts roamed the streets and helpless city officials dug mass graves. It was the worst epidemic in American history, killing over 600,000--until it disappeared as mysteriously as it had begun.

Maude (White) Owen is buried in the White family cemetery in Randolph County, AR.

Personal Knowledge of daughter of Maudie, LaVada Owen as relayed to Annis Gayle (Clayton) Jarrell in Malden, Mo. 1998.
He* married ROSA BELL ALLEN* in Randolph County, AR, August 31, 1919. ROSA* was born in Gainsville, Mo. Ozark County March 14, 1894. ROSA* was the daughter of WILLIAM BARTEN ALLEN* and MATILDA FRANCIS WAY*. She* married UNKNOWN CRIDER*. ROSA* died October 7, 1985 in Malden, Dunklin Co., MO, at 91 years of age. Her* body was interred in Memorial Park Cemetery Malden, MO. Marriage License in hands of grand daughter, Annis Gayle (Clayton) Jarrell. Malden, Mo. 1998. They got the license August 29, 1919 and it showed they were residents of Walnut Ridge, Ark. County of Lawrence. John was 33 and Rosa Bell was 25. T.B. ALLISON married them in Randolph county. It was witnessed by M.J. Owen, which they think was John's brother Manuel Jack Owen. The other witness was W. B. Allen, which would be Rosa's father, William Bart Allen.

I REMEMBER GRANDMA OWEN WITH SPECIAL PLEASURE, PARTLY BECAUSE I BELIEVE I WAS A FAVORITE WITH HER. SHE WAS ALWAYS PLEASANT TO BE WITH, AND SHE HAD CAUSE TO BE A LITTLE PUT OUT. SHE NEVER HAD A REFRIGATOR OR ELECTRIC COFFEE MAKER UNTIL AFTER SHE HAD RETIRED. THEY WERE SHARECROPPERS, AND ELECTRICITY DID NOT GET TO THEM UNTIL AFTER THEY RETIRED AND MOVED TO TOWN. SHE COOKED, GARDENED AND CANNED, BOILED CLOTHES IN A LARGE METAL POT, MADE HER OWN QUILTS AND FEATHER MATRESSES. SHE WAS A GREAT STORYTELLER, ESPECIALLY GHOST STORIES, THEY SCARED THE HECK OUT OF ME. SHE TOOK ME TO MOVIES WHEN I WAS VERY YOUNG. I WAS FORTUNATE TO HAVE HER....
