Lot Davis (1795) of VA to Lawrence County, AR. Related Surnames include: Allison, Buster, Clayton, Davis, Hale, Higginbotham, Looney, Mcdonald, Mcilroy, Mcmann, Owen, Prince, Wrenfrow

The Davis family was tough to cipher. Looking for Elizabeth Looney was nearly impossible. First, her father died when she was young; second, the census index was listed incorrectly. Lott was born in VA, the search continues. Made a contact with someone of the Davis family sometime ago, she say's that we are related to 50 percent of the people living in Lawrence County, Arkansas.

Lot Davis

First Generation

1. Lot DAVIS* was born in Virginia December 13, 1795.
He* married Mary Ellen ANDERSON* in Iron County, MO, April 22, 1814. Mary* was born in TN April 25, 1796. Mary* died November 23, 1873 in Randolph County, AR, at 77 years of age. Listed as Mary Henderson at LDS.
Lot* died March 22, 1871 in Randolph County, AR, at 75 years of age. Information from Paula Naujalis, great gg granddaughter of Lott Davis. Web site http://cyber.wmis.net/_naujalis/.

RANDOLPH COUNTY
ARKANSAS
by Lawrence Dalton
Published 1946 - 1947

Page [10]
The census for the year 1830 listed the following persons in Randolph County aged 60 to 70: William Hix John Pierce Isaac Flannery, William McKnight and James Davis; aged 70 to 80, Nathan Luttrell, James Boyd, Martin Vanzandt, and Mrs. Joe Kellett; over 80 years of age, John Shaver. (Would like to know whom this James Davis is and where he is from. Looking for leads to Lot Davis parents from VA.)

1818 or earlier, Solomon Hewitt sold the farm on which the first court of Lawrence County was held to Benjamin Crowley, October 12, 1819. This property is described on the records as being "on the north bank of Spring River, two miles above the mouth of Elevenpoint." Crowley already lived here at this time. This Benjamin Crowley is the man who settled at Walcott, Greene County, and for whom Crowley's Ridge was named. Edward McDonald, who was Lawrence County's first Representative in the Territorial Legislature in 1820, lived near the present village of Supply prior to that time. Charles Hatcher lived in the south end of Davidson Township before 1818. He was appointed Justice of the Peace in that year. Dr. Englemann, the noted German physician and scientist, traveled from St. Louis to Little Rock in 1837. He spent some time at the home of Dr. Peyton R. Pittman at Pittman's Ferry and stated that the latter had lived here over twenty-five years at that time. William Hix owned this ferry years before Dr. Pittman became owner. Evidently Hix's Ferry was in operation around 1800.

RANDOLPH COUNTY

The follow-in names are listed as leading citizens of the Davidsonville community before 1815: Louis De Mun, William Robinson, William Hix (evidently Hix moved to Davidsonville when he sold out at Pittman), Solomon Hewitt, Andrew Criswell, James M. Kuykendall, Isaac Kelley, Charles Kelley, Morris Moore, James Campbell, Richard Searcy. On Elevenpoint River before 1815 were William Looney, William Meredith, Massach H. Jones, John Miller, James Hallock, and the Mcllroy and Stubblefield families. On Janes Creek were John Janes, Lot Davis, and up near the state line William O'Neal, Obediah Hudson and Shadrach Nettles. Henry Schoolcraft passed through Randolph County in 1819 and stopped at the village of Fourche de Thomas and in his writ-

...that the first church here was a Missionary Baptist church, built in the seventies. After several years they moved to Yadkin, a few miles up the creek, and the Church of Christ built a building near this site, which is in use today by the latter church. The English, Higginbotham, Rogers, Kellett, Marriott, James, Davis, Bailey and other families reside in this community, and members of these families are identified with both churches.

ONE HUNDRED YEAR CLUB

The following named families, and possibly others, have resided in the county over a century: Johnston, Bigger, Mock, Shaver, Dalton, Dunn, Hufstedler, Perrin, Sparkman, Mcllroy, Stubblefield, Davis, Sloan, White, King, Murphy, Moore, Jarrett, Foster, Lindsey, Ingram, Pitman, Duff, Cockrum, Mansker, Rapert, Carter, Lewis, Reeves, Morris, Wiley, Dean, Crabtree, Miller, Cox, Eldridge, Looney, Black, Janes, James, Martin, McNabb, Nettles, O'Neal, Hudson, Holt, Bailey, Phillips, Spikes, McCarroll, Campbell, Haas, Carroll, Vandergriff.

INTERESTING ITEMS FROM HERE AND THERE

In doing any historical research work we find many interesting items which do not belong in any certain chapter, but are a vital part of the story of any country. This is true of Randolph County history. In this article the writer will include such, beginning with the following: Governor Archibald Yell married Maria Ficklin at Pocahontas, July 7, 1836. Stephen F. Austin, known as the "Father of Texas" and Alamo fame, was appointed by Territorial Governor Miller to the office of judge of the first territorial court which was held July 15, 1820. On the land records, dated September 24, 1818, Richard Woods sold to Joseph Janes a preemption claim on Janes creek "located west of Lot Davis." Stephen F. Austin was a witness to the transaction. Austin possibly resided in Randolph County at this time.

THE OCONEE COMMUNITY

One of the oldest inland communities of Randolph County is the community known as Oconee. Being situated in Dry Creek valley, it is the site of some of the first homesteads in Elevenpoint river valley.
Among the first families to settle here were the Rices, John Wells, Rodney Crawford, the Selbys, Barbers, Howell White, some of the McIlroys, some of the Stubblefields, Davis and Jacksons.

Second Generation

2. Elizabeth2 DAVIS (Lot1 DAVIS*) was born in Iron County, MO May 14, 1815.
She married Hammet MCILROY Hon. in Randolph County, AR, July 11, 1833. Hammet was born in Madison County, MO March 9, 1812. He was the son of Samuel MCILROY and Elizabeth MCLAIN. He married Maria L. COOPER September 10, 1871. There were born to Hammet and Maria ten sons, seven of whom lived to maturity. Listed are William, Thomas J., Archibald Y. (moved to Hood County, Texas, Elizabeth Jane (Baker), and Clorah T. (Bird), Martha (Robinett), Maria L. (Fry).
Hammet received a limited education, though, after all, one superior to most boys in those days, for he was fond of study and was a good pupil.
In 1850 he was elected to represent Randolph County in State legislature, and in 1852 was re-elected to the same position. In 1850 Samuel heartily indorsed the compromise act as it was passed by Congress that year, and warmly supported by Clay, Webster, Douglas and others. This session witnessed resolutions introduced, some approving and others opposing the action of that honorable body. In 1860 and 1861, when the subject of secession was being warmly discussed, he opposed secession to the utmost of his ability, first because he did not think there was sufficient cause to justify such a course, and next owing to a belief that secession could not win.

Hon. Hammet McIlroy, the oldest living settler of Randolph County, Ark, was born in Madison County, Mo., March 9, 1812, it being then a portion of Louisiana Territory. He is a son of Samuel and Elizabeth (McLain) McIlroy, the father's birth occurring in Culpeper County, Va., in 1781, and his death in Randolph County, Ark., April 8, 1853. The early youth and manhood of the father were spent in his native State, and his first removal from there was to Hopkins County, Ky., where he met and married Miss McLain, whose birth occurred in South Carolina, in 1793, their union taking place in 1808. Shortly after their nuptials they removed to Cape Girardean County, Mo., then to Madison County, and in 1813, came to what is now Randolph County, Ark., where they made their home until their respective deaths. The mother died December 5, 1850. Samuel McIlroy was a soldier in the War of 1812, and fought the Seminole Indians. In his youth he learned the hatter's trade, but the most of his later years was spent at farming, in which occupation he was quite successful. He was a Democrat. His father. Daniel McIlroy, was born in Virginia, and was of Scotch descant. He was a Revolutionary soldier, and was once captured at the battle of Long Island. Alexander McLain, the paternal grandfather, was also in that war, and was at the battles of King's Mountain, Cowpens and others. There were born to the marriage of Samuel and Elizabeth McIlroy, ten sons, seven of whom lived to maturity. Hammet was the second child, and is one of only two who are now living. He and his brother, Andrew J., worked for their father until sixteen years of age, learning in the meantime the hatter's trade, and after that time began working at their trade for themselves. In 1844 Hammet turned his attention to farming, and his labors in this direction have been attended with good results, he being now the owner of 650 acres of excellent land, a considerable portion of which is rich bottom soil. He has been an extensive trader in grain and stock, and has shipped both down the river on flatboats. In politics he has always been a Democrat, and in 1850 he was elected to represent Randolph County in the State legislature, and in 1852 was re-elected to the same position. July 11, 1833, he married Miss Elizabeth Davis, a daughter of Lot and Mary Davis, who came from Iron County, Mo., to this [p.411] county in 1818. She was born May 14, 1815, and died February 1, 1871, having been an earnest member of the Baptist Church for many years. Five of her ten children are now living: William, Thomas J., Archibald Y., Elizabeth Jane and Clorah T. Mr. McIlroy married his second wife on the 10th of September, 1871, her maiden name being Maria L. Cooper, who was born in Greene County, Ind., April 22, 1828, a daughter of M. Cooper, and the widow of William J. Inman. He and wife are members of the Baptist Church, and although they are now quite aged, they are yet hale and hearty, giving promise of spending many more years of usefulness in Randolph County. In the legislature of 1850 Mr. McIlroy heartily indorsed the compromise act as it was passed by Congress that year, and warmly supported by Clay, Webster, Douglas and others. After the war had progressed about three years and President Lincoln had offered his amnesty proclamation, he was in favor of accepting that, and when the Confederate armies had surrendered and peace was made and the Southern States offered pardon and restoration to their constitutional rights in the Union on certain conditions, he advocated reconstruction as proposed by the Federal government, as they were the victorious party, and as such had the right to dictate the terms of peace to the vanquished.
