The Looney family begins with Robert Looney (1692)from Asle of Man, England/Ireland. This family history can be found in several Websites. Our line travels to Botetoura County, VA, Lincoln County, KY, AR.
Our branch connects to Joseph Looney (1794 - 1823) who died in Lawrence County, AR. His son William S. Looney married Cloah Davis and had a daughter Elizabeth "Betsy" McIlroy Looney born in 1859.
Descendants of Robert and Elizabeth Looney are documented in several books as well as the Web. They were patriots and early frontiersmen of the new country. Seven of their sons extended the family into 15 of the early states.
Our link with the Looney line was rather difficult to connect. Elizabeth "Betsy" M. Looney was indexed incorrectly in the census records of Arkansas. Her father died when she was young, and only after going over census records line by line for the third time did we find her listed with the family of William C. Byrd, her mother's second husband. Again, this is what makes genealogy research so interesting.

__ By 1765 David Looney was awarded 140 acres as a result of the court case against his father, Robert Looney, and John Bowyer. This land included the Robert Looney homestead and the land where Looney's Ferry was located. In 1766 David and Mary Looney sold this land to Captain William Crow. __ By 1772 "William Crow's Ferry" was mentioned in a petition to the Virginia General Assembly. Looney's Ferry became Crow's Ferry, although there may have been some lapse in its operation due to the chancery suit already mentioned.
