Notes for NANCY DARBY:
Last name may be Dabney.

Generation No. 2

2. SARAH "SALLY"4 LANE (THOMAS3, WILLIAM2, THOMAS1) was born March 10, 1798 in NC, and died March 23, 1880 in Walpole, Hamilton County, IL. She married (1) JACOB CLAY DEAN April 17, 1824, son of JACOB DEAN and SUSAN HATTEY. He was born November 12, 1803 in TN or KY, and died August 13, 1854 in Hamilton County, IL. She married (2) HEZEKIAH MASSEY March 24, 1857.

Notes for SARAH "SALLY" LANE:
Sally Lane parents - Thomas Lane and Nancy Dabney. She may be listed in our Lane tree as Sarah Lane daughter of Thomas Lane.

Notes for JACOB CLAY DEAN:
Sally died March 23, 1880 in Walpole, Hamilton County, IL, at 82 years of age.

According to 1850 census of Hamilton Co. Sarah "Sally" Lane was born in 1800 in NC. The Lanes must have moved again from Bedford Co., VA to NC between 1700 and Sally's birth in 1800.

1850 Hamilton Co. Census P412, household #188 Shows Jacob C. Deen 46, farmer b TN. Sarah 50 b NC. Sarah A. age 17 b IL, Susan A. age 15 b IL, Nancy age 13, b IL.

Marriage 17 Apr 1824 is on page 63 of Harrelson Book. Jacob Clay Deen is buried in Little Spring Cemetery near the front gate and next to Rev. Jacob Deen. His wife Sarah "Sally" Lane Deen also had a marker and I have a picture of it, but it has disappeared. I also have pictures of Jacob Clay marker.

Children of Jacob Clay Deen and Sally Lane have eluded me. From my research I can only identify 6 children. Opel "Lane" Morrow of MO sent me her listing of 7 children. Marvin D. Coffey of OR also shows 7 and Louie Johnson shows 9. I have eliminated 3 from the Louie Johnson list and one each from Coffey & Morrow lists.

Jacob Clay Deen and Sally Lane had the following children:

Nanny Deen was born Est. 1819-1855.
James Dabney Deen was born about 1826.
Julia Ann Deen was born December 18, 1828.
Lucinda Emiline Deen was born August 8, 1831.
Sara Adeline Deen was born 1833. Sara died Est. 1834-1927.
Susan Angeline Deen was born February 6, 1835.
Nancy Ann Deen was born November 25, 1838.

Moury and James Dabney Deen were Administrators of the Rev. JTF Lewis Estate. (Felty 1865-10 contradicts this info as it shows Admin. as Aaron Johnson. ??)

According to Louie Gray Johnson, gr dau of Moury, he always took great pride in having the finest team of horse is the community. He dearly loved his horses. In the late 1840 or early 1850 Moury and Lucinda traveled by covered wagon to the rich prairies of Kansas and homesteaded a section of land (640 acres). (They do not appear in Hamilton County census of 1850 so may have been gone to Kansas at that time). He may have traveled with his cousin the James A. Coffey family who left Walpole and settled in SE Kansas around 1854. James Coffey fought for anti slavery for the state of Kansas. He took up merchandising and established several trading posts trading extensively with the indians and learned 2 indian languages. The town of Coffeyville, KS. was established by him and named for him.

There were many Indians in the area of Kansas where Moury and Lucinda settled. They were very afraid of them and to keep the peace they gave them watermelons. The Indians loved those and ate them all including seeds and the rind. Before they had lived in Kansas long enough to prove up their claim a rider came through the country saying the Indians had broken off the Reservation and were coming on the Warpath.

Putting a few things in their wagon they left their home and everything. I remember my grandmother Naomi Lewis saying her mother looked back at the house for one last time as they drove out their lane and her rocker was setting on the front porch rocking in the wind. They had forgotten to load it in the wagon.

Although only four of their children lived to be adults Moury and Lucinda raised 16 children of relatives who were left orphans by the 1854 Cholera Epidemic. (Info from Mary Cotter & Louie Johnson) 1854 would have been a sad one for Moury and Lucinda as both his parents Rev. JTF Lewis and Phoebe and their small child, her father Jacob Clay Deen and gr. father Rev. Jacob Deen all died from Cholera in a two week period.

In October 1999 the monument of Moury & Lucinda was sandblasted and re-lettered. Lucinda's had never had her date of death added. This has now been done and the marker looks like new in the Rector Cemetery, Walpole, IL. Paid for by their gr grandchildren Harold Ellis, Nancy Fassler & Etta Fassler (gr children of Melvin Green Lewis who was raised by Moury & Lucinda. (part of the 16).

Jacob Clay Lewis, 2d child of Moury & Lucinda Deen. He mar Emily Hester Tate of Saline Co., IL. They made their home at Walpole, IL but moved to Kansas and Arkansas (as children were born there) but returned to IL. Jacob suffered very bad with Asthma and Doctors told him he needed to move to Arizona if he wanted to live a normal life. (info from my grandmother Naomi Lewis) Family lore as remembered by Mary Cotter and Louie Johnson is they traveled by boat to the coast of Texas and started West to Arizona in a covered wagon.

The Enon Primitive Baptist Church was organized 13 Sep 1890 in White Flat School house (now Vera) with Jacob Clay Lewis, Emily Lewis, J. H. Lea and wife, E. E. Taylor and A. Johnston. In October 1891 Jacob Clay was ordained a Minister/Elder and served as pastor of the church from Oct 1891 until 1894.

Mrs. Emily Tate Lewis was a thrifty housewife. The children were taught to work and given the privilege of ownership. They were given as much education and home training as possible. They were taught to laugh, work and face adversity with courage and determination. They learned about discipline in the home. When the children married they had some things to start a new life with. There were fishing trips and fish fries, camp meetings and excursions to the Pease River to pick wild plums. There was wood to be gotten in when time was available. When youngsters needed something to do, there were "cow chips" to be gathered for firewood. (This family history was written by Inez Short gr dau of Jacob Clay Lewis for the History of Knox County, TX.)

(note of Harold Ellis) I remember well that my grandmother Naomi Lewis(Gray) always corresponded with her brother Uncle Jake and family in TX. I can see her now reading a letter from them or sitting in her rocking chair on the front porch of our home with a pencil in her hand. After her death and the death of Jacob the family correspondence was kept up by my Aunt Hattie May Gray and a dau of Jacob Lewis. Upon the death of Hattie the correspondence was kept up by the dau of Hattie being Mary Cotter and the gr dau of Jacob Lewis being Nellie Judson. In 1981 Mary Cotter and I visited our cousin Nellie Judson in Ft. Worth, TX. The families had corresponded since 1882 but this was the first face to face contact in 100 years.

Naomi Moury Lewis (daughter of Lucinda Emiline Deen and Moury Vickery Lewis) was born in Walpole, Hamilton County, IL September 24, 1865. Naomi died January 10, 1947 in Walpole, Hamilton County, IL, at 81 years of age. She married Millage Miller Gray September 23, 1883. Millage was born in Walpole, Hamilton County, IL February 18, 1859. Millage was the son of Thomas Alexander Gray and Priscilla Davis. Millage died January 13, 1934 in Walpole, Hamilton County, IL, at 74 years of age.

Millage Miller Gray was very jovial, with a barrel chest and about 5' 9" tall. He and Naomi had a big celebration for their 50th Wedding anniversary. I have the newspaper clipping about the big day. My dad and bro Dale are in the picture of those attending, but I could not be there and mother stayed home with me as I was only one week old. Millage died the following spring and I never got to know him.

Bob Jones, whose father Homer Jones ran a store in Walpole told me the following story. Millage would come to Walpole and get a riode in a buggy the county seat at McLeansboro, Il which was 16 miles away. When he returned from town he would use the phone at the store and say "Omi if you love me, come and get me". After a while Omi would arrive in the buggy to pick him up and go home.

3. LEWIS4 LANE (THOMAS3, WILLIAM2, THOMAS1) was born March 07, 1799 in Bedford County, VA, and died September 10, 1874 in Phelps County, MO. He married (1) NANCY DEAN April 17, 1824 in Hamilton County, IL, daughter of JACOB DEAN and SUSAN HATTEY. She was born Abt. 1794, and died Abt. 1844. He married (2) ELISA JANE BROYLES March 03, 1845 in Hamilton County, IL.

Notes for LEWIS LANE:
In Black Hawk War - Coffey Book Page 159.

Thereafter continued the many assault and battery indictments. In one day in November 1824, the Grand Jury returned five true bills or indictments for assault and battery, against such illustrious names as Lewis Lane, William Briant and Garret Harris, and the amazing part about it all was that Lewis Lane plead guilty; and was fined $2.00 and costs on the first Saturday morning in November 1824. This fine did not detract from the good character of Lewis Lane in the least, because on the day he entered his plea of guilty to assault and battery he served on a jury that awarded John Townsend $8.00 in damages in a suit against Thomas Smith. A few days later the Grand Jury returned seven more indictments against Hamilton County citizens for assault and battery. Fighting must have been the most popular sport or occupation of gentlemen for again we find the names of more of our illustrious ancestors in the role of defendants.
